So why does the LED keep shining after turning off, should you care about it and what can you do about it?

The quick answer is some internal diodesLED light- especially in lower quality bulbs – can take even the smallest wattage and light up with it. This is something that other bulbs cannot do.

So basically if your LED bulb is giving off a dim light even when it’s off that’s not a sign that there’s anything wrong with the bulb but your lighting, you still have a little current flowing through it even when it is off.

Why do LED bulbs glow when turned off?

There are two main reasons for this phenomenon:

  1. With neutral wire
  2. in a circuit that is not grounded.
  3. Has an electromagnetic induction
  4. causing electrical surges along the cable.

In both cases, the LED bulb may light up a little. It doesn’t actually damage the bulb. Yes, it “waste its lifespan” butLED bulbs have been around for a long timeanyway. Another small downside is that it consumes a bit of power but again – that’s not too big considering the low power consumption we’re talking about.

However, if the LED bulb lights up when turned off, this is a sign of a fault in the system, you may want to have it repaired.

How to prevent the led from glowing when off?

There are several ways to approach this and they are all quite simple. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Replace the bulb with a better quality LED bulb.
  2. It won’t fix the underlying cause of the problem, but if all you care about is getting rid of the annoyance, this is the quickest way to fix it. Just make sure the new bulb is from a reliable, high quality brand.
  3. Wire pulling.
  4. You will need a Zener diode for this method – it is a diode that regulates the voltage of the circuit and blocks any excess charge when the system is off.
  5. Install neon lights to reduce additional costs.
  6. These indicators can be purchased from Amazon and should be connected between the neutral bulb and the single bulb at the end of the string. Basically, this way the indicator will light up instead of the bulb.
  7. If the fixture is still under warranty, you can and should contact the manufacturer
  8. because what you see is a faulty light fixture and not a faulty bulb. Alternatively, you can also call an electrician if this all seems too complicated.

Some of the simpler LED lamps that use capacitive (or resistive) droppers can glow slightly as soon as they are put into lampholders, even though the switch isn’t turned on. I can only guess this is due to the capacitance between the switch circuits wires causing slight coupling of current that is probably in the region of microAmps, but enough to make strings of LEDs glow visibly.

If there’s an electrolytic capacitor with a discharge resistor across it then that can shunt the current so the voltage drops below the point the LEDs would light.

The same effect has caused issues in the past with compact fluorescent lamps, where the internal capacitor would slowly charge up until the circuitry would kick in and drain the capacitor again causing the lamp to pulse visibly in a dark room.

I quite like the effect. The current involved is so low that it can pretty much be classed as free light. (but sadly not true overunity power)

There is no dimmer or any other electronic devices attached to the circuit which might be leaking energy and causing the glow. The circuit used in the video is a dual switched circuit configuration, which is commonly found in hallways and stairwells throughout the UK.

Multiple switched lighting circuits by their nature tend to have much longer wiring runs between the switches, which can make this effect more pronounced. Changing the switched positions of the switches can also change the effective length of the floating side of the circuit and consequently changes the intensity of the visible glow.

As demonstrated in the video, you need “both” a susceptible bulb as well as the circuit in question must be wired in a particular way, ie switched neutral.
