Madigan gave… tips for painting on glass and ceramics.

Helpful tips and advice about using glass paint on glass and ceramics.

Do you like the look of stained and painted glassware? Me too! (As you can tell after Mondayglass bowlAnd yesterday was so cutesmall jars!) It’s a popular trend that won’t be going away any time soon…. and painting glass is an easy DIY project that can be done overnight.

I already told you, yes,Glassware can be spray painted, but there are somemainlimitations when using spray paint on glass…namely,Reliability.Traditional spray painting is a quick and dirty way to paint glass…but it may not wear out much. Ionly oneuse this approach with items that are purely decorative and won’t be handled much.

But how to paint these glasses that will be used frequently or that you want to wash, such as serving pieces? Well I grew to love and be gratefulglass and enamel paint. These paintings are numerous,a lot oflonger lasting than spray paint on glass and often after hardening…items can even be put in the dishwasher!

I have received many questions from you about these glass paints and would like to update you on my experience with this crafting medium. For the love offull disclosure, you should knowthisthe most ofThe glass paint I used the year before was sent to me for free. I received glass paint from two major manufacturers: Glass Plaster by Martha Stewart and DecoArt, which produces the Americana line of glass paints that I used. It’s not my responsibility to tell you about one brand or the other today – I like to work with both. I also bought and usedLibrary glassesandenamel paintalso for previous painting projects. And there are other brands of glass paint, like Pebeo Vitrea and Tulip (I’ve never tried those brands personally – so I won’t review them here).

So what do you need to know about glass paintings? Here is my advice:

Practical advice for painting glass and ceramics

My tips for painting glass with glass paint

Find inexpensive glassware.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on your glass pieces. I like to buy cheap stuff at thrift stores, garage sales, craft stores, or dollar stores.

glass paint ideas

But one of my favorite places to find glass to craft is in my own trash can! (I love free!)

Thoroughly clean your glassware.

Dirt (and oil from your hands) can prevent the paint from adhering to the glass. I first put all my glassware in the dishwasher. Then, just before painting, I use a rag and wipe the glass with isopropyl alcohol.

how to paint glass - clean glass with isopropyl alcohol

Plan your painting design.

Want to draw a floating pattern on your drink? Just add color wash to the mason jar? A hands-free design? Create a stained glass look? Stencil on a drawing? Paint in the grooves of the glass? Splash the glass?

painting on glass

Think long and hard about how you are going to paint your glass. Sketch out your design if necessary and make sure you have all the right tools and paint on hand. But don’t worry… if you make a mistake, the paint can usually be removed by immediately wiping it off with alcohol or gently scraping it off before the paint sets.

Use the right glass paint for the look you want.

Each glass coating will achieve a different look and finish. It is important to use the right product so that your product looks like you imagined.

What effect would you like to have on your piece of glass?

  • Opaque appearance
  • Perfect for getting an even color on your glass or ceramic chips. Can be used for freehand drawing or with stencils.
    For example:

    Americana Brilliant Enamels
    Martha Stewart Painting Craft
    Martha Stewart Solid Glass Paint

  • transparent color
  • A great way to add sheer, see-through color to your eyewear. Can be used free-hand or with stencils.
    For example:

    Martha Stewart Clear Glass Paint
    DecoArt crystal varnish

  • Three-dimensional / embossed appearance
  • Want to write a word? Create texture on a part? Draw something and “fill” it so it looks like stained glass? There are thicker glass paints with small tips on the bottle to help you paint your 3D design.
    For example:

    DecoArt 3-D Gloss Enamel Writer
    Top liquid glass bookcase

  • Dyeing and coloring
  • These paints generally have a much thinner viscosity than other paints. They can fill in defined areas to create a stained glass effect OR can be used as a “wash” on glass to create color on your items.
    For example:

    Martha Stewart Clear Glass Paint
    Gallery in painted acrylic glass
    DecoArt Glass Stains

  • professional end
  • Want to add some sparkle, frost or shine to your glasses? Use one of the specialty glass paints for a unique look.
    For example:

Martha Stewart Pearls and Metallic Paint
    DecoArt Frosted Brilliant Enamels
Martha Stewart Fine Glitter Matte Glass Paint

Most of these paints can be had for less than $2-3 a bottle at your local craft store (or cheaper with a coupon!).

Keep the right tools on hand at all times.

You’ll need more than pieces of glass and paint to create a successful and shiny paint job. I usually have these objects nearby when painting glass:

glass paint tips: use toothpicks and cotton swabs

  • brush and sponge
  • Useful for different application methods…depending on whether you want a smooth look or a floating/textured effect to your paintwork.
  • Cotton swabs and toothpicks
  • These supplies are great for cleaning up your mistakes when painting. Dip a cotton swab in alcohol to clean the stain or use a toothpick to scrape off any freshly dried paint that has come off.
  • Paper towels and rags
  • I can’t paint without it…it’s a must for a messy painter like me!
  • Masking tape, stencils and silk fabric
  • Artists tape or stencil tape can help you draw clear lines or patterns on the glass.
Today there are some very fine stencils and bristles used for glass. They are also sticky and flexible, so you can apply them to curved surfaces.
Stencil patterns I like: (note – these are affiliate links)

Martha Stewart Placemat Glass Screen Prints
    Martha Stewart Flowers Stencil

Wait and cure the paint as directed.

Glass paint usually dries to a lighter/lighter color than the paint color when wet. Be aware that sometimes you may need to apply an extra coat or two to get the look you want.

bake glass and enamel paints on glass

Also, it is important to know that you may not be able to use your glassware right away.Patientuntil the paint hardens and hardens. Some paints air dry for several weeks while others can be fired and placed in the oven. Alwaysreadand follow the painting instructions to understand how to set up your painting. (And some glass paints, like some Gallery Glass formulations, may be intentionally temporary and will peel off over time…be sure to read the manufacturer’s information before purchasing.)

Be aware of the limitations of painting.

I love painted glass and ceramics…but they’re not perfect. Keep these things in mind when planning your project:

  • You can see the lines on the shirt even after the paint dries. Apply several coats of thin, smooth paint to prevent this from happening.
  • The glitter glass finish may not cover as completely as expected and multiple coats may be required.
  • I would like to point out that these paintings
  • not considered a safe food
  • . If I’m painting something that can be used in the kitchen, I’ll brush paint onto areas of my glass that aren’t likely to touch food.

Despite these limitations… you can do a lot with glass paint! I like that the patterns are more durable to clean and wash.

Enjoy!

Painting on glass is easy and fun. It’s a simple craft that can be crafted at any age or skill level.
