Most stained woods have a protective varnish and also need to be removed. So technically, you would have to use a chemical stripper first to remove the varnish (and some stains will also come off), then sand a thin coat over the wood to remove most of the stains. You can also sand small scratches and fill in deep holes. Then, apply a new coat of wax and polish to make your furniture or wood floors look like new again.

STEP 1: Prepare your workspace.

Before you start, you should know that most wood strippers (and evenpaint strippingdesigned to handle polish) contains harsh chemicals that are hazardous to breathe and should not touch your skin. If possible, be active outdoors. If your piece of wood is too big or can’t be moved, make sure the windows are open and the room is well ventilated. Spread a small cloth to protect the work area (if you are removing stains from furniture).

STEP 2: Lay out the tools and materials.

Keep brushes, razors and plastic scrapers close together. Wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and closed shoes. Before opening the stripper, put on chemical resistant gloves and goggles. You don’t want the strippers to come into contact with your skin or splash into your eyes. Finally, put on a mask.

Pro tip:Read the manufacturer’s instructions for chemical cleaners. They can make specific recommendations on the proper protective gear to use.

STEP 3: Pour the bleach into a smaller container.

Use only containers specifically designed for corrosive solvents such as disposable aluminum pans or metal bowls. Carefully pour the makeup remover kit into the container so as not to get any on your clothes or on the floor.

How To Remove Stain from Wood: Applying Stripper

STEP 4: Apply a thick coat of stripping powder.

Dip the brush into the container of stain remover and apply a thick layer of stain remover to the wood. Brush it thoroughly over the surface of the wood until the entire surface is covered. Be sure to keep the stripping cloth even and thick.

Pro tip:If the piece of furniture you are working on is large, it will be easier to remove stains from a small area first rather than from the entire piece of furniture at once.

STEP 5: Leave to infuse.

Strippers should soak for a period of 15-20 minutes. However, it is best to read the label on the stain remover for specific time instructions. Check it every few minutes. If you notice dry patches, apply more hair removal cream.

STEP 6: Scrape the stain remover from the wood.

Use a plastic scraper to scrape off varnish and stains. Start at one edge and gently push the scraper across the surface of the wood in a straight line. Scrape up the debris and repeat in another location. Continue until all stains on the wood surface are scraped away.

STEP 7: Wipe the surface.

Dip a piece of steel wool into the strip and wipe the surface. In the direction of the grain. Be sure to get into every nook and cranny. When you are satisfied that all of the protective coating has been removed, wipe the surface of the wood with a damp cloth. Let the piece of wood dry for 24 hours.

STEP 8: Sand your surface.

Once the wood is dry, sand the surface with medium sandpaper. If you are working on a large area, use an electric hand sander. Keep sanding until you’ve removed all of the polish and stains. As you continue to sand, the existing stain will disappear and the raw wood underneath will be exposed.

Follow up with fine sandpaper to smooth out any scratches caused by the coarse sandpaper. Once you are happy with the color of the wood, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any wood dust. Now the piece of wood is ready for a new stain and protective finish.

Make your wood furniture look like new again by getting out rings and spots.

Step 1: Clean stains immediately

Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth, and then clean the spot as quickly as you can. The more time that elapses, the more difficult it will be to remove stains.

Step 2: Tackle white marks

To remove white marks on wood, like the rings left by a hot mug or a wet glass, make a paste of equal parts baking soda and white toothpaste (not gel).

Step 3: Rub it in

Gently rub it into the stain with a sponge or cloth, using a circular motion, until the stain disappears.

Step 4: Wipe and buff

Wipe the surface with a clean, damp cloth before buffing with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 5: Take out dark spots

If water damage has left dark spots on wood, try dabbing gently at the stain with a clean, white cloth soaked in vinegar. Or brush hydrogen peroxide on the stain with a clean toothbrush once a day for a week.

Step 6: Remove dog spit

Try removing dog saliva stains from hardwood floors by spraying window cleaner on them and wiping clean.
