Learn how to create your own magnetic chalkboard wall with this step-by-step guide to creating a command center that keeps your life organized!

magnetic chalkboard wall tutorial

The fridge is full of children’s art.

Continuous rotation of activities and commitments to follow.

Library books are lost every week.

My friend Connie is about to lose him and needs a command centeryesterday. Her homemade magnetic blackboard wall is the magical solution that keeps her calm.

Connie is here today to share all the details of the project and its positive impact on her and her family.

I’ll let her tell you, in her own words, how to create your own magnetic chalkboard wall!

magnetic chalkboard wall as a kitchen command center

Why make a giant magnetic chalkboard wall?

  1. Paperwork:
  2. The kids came home with a LOT of paperwork and we ran out of fridge space.
  3. Missing library books:
  4. The bookcase shelves keep them easily visible, so we always know where they are. The shelves also make the books in our library a “feature” so we can get excited about the books we’ll be reading this week.
  5. Custom:
  6. Painting the wall with a magnetic blackboard instantly allows us to customize the kitchen according to our mood.

How to make a wall with a magnetic board in 6 steps

Step 1: Prepare

Prepare the wall by sanding with a fine emery powder, then dust with a clean, damp cloth or large sponge.

Step 2: Mark the areas to magnetize

Stick painter’s tape on the wall to mark the parts you want to magnetize. Skip this step if you are going to magnetize the whole wall.

Step 3: Add magnetic primer (lots!)

Apply 3-5 coats of Magnetic Primer to the parts you wish to magnetize. Primer instructions call for three coats of paint, but use more to ensure the wall is fully magnetized.

Step 4: Roll chalkboard paint

After the Magnetic Primer is dry, apply two coats of Chalkboard Finish using a foam roller. Sand between coats of paint to smooth out any swelling.

Step 5: Wait!

Let the paint dry for three days before use.

Step 6: Spices for the wall

Coat the wall with white chalk by sweeping one side of the white chalk over the entire painted surface (test horizontally and vertically to ensure full coverage), then erase. The seasoning will help your chalk drawing fade better.

DIY magnetic chalkboard wall with calendar and shelves

Important tips for a neat magnetic blackboard wall

Five coats of magnetic paint in two rectangular areas of the wall create a straight line showing the finished product, so I sanded them down and then covered them with shelves, calendars and papers.

You can avoid this problem by painting the whole wall with magnetic paint instead of a small area.

Organizations that have an impact

So far, we’re loving our DIY magnetic wall chart. Kids love having space to doodle and practice their letters and words, and I love organizing my time visually with the giant calendar.

Featured command center is really helpful for me,and I don’t feel like I’m constantly forgetting things anymore.

I customize chalk art whenever I get bored of the final design, and that’s itit’s really good for me to have a creative outleteasy to do and easy to erase. I also love finding an inspirational quote that has momentary meaning to me.

A big THANK YOU to Connie for sharing her amazing project with us! I love that she took the time to properly assess her family’s needs before embarking on the project. Now she has a magnetic wall-mounted command center that keeps her organized and gives her family a chance to get creative every day!
