Glass Circle Cutting Video
1 First steps with cut-out stained glass circles
First cut the circles
Draw your circle on art glass with a permanent marker
Put linoleum or newspaper underneath to cushion it from pressure
Wear safety glasses
Make your first cut by entering from one side, following a circular path around and out the opposite edge
As always with the cut, be sure to maintain consistent pressure along the full length of the score line so that you rest well.
2 Open the Cut section
Use your thumb to open the sheet music
Flip the glass over so that the cut line (or score line) you just created is underneath
Press firmly along the number line with your thumb until it pops open
You should see the “open” cut along its entire length. It will start to look shiny and like it is cracked
3 Section separation – Method 1
Split the score line with your thumb
Flip the glass over, so that the number line you drew is on the glass
Place your thumbs on either side of the line where your score is END. It is best to start opening the cut from this end
Easily separate the two pieces of glass by gently rocking your wrist back and forth
If the score is only half open, you can repeat this swinging action starting from the other side (where you started the cut)
Be sure to hold it firmly underneath with both hands while you do this
4 Section separation – Method 2
Repeat 1-3 on the other side of the circle. These alternative methods for cutting circles with stained glass are ideal if your thumb is not strong.
Use the slotting machine to press the cutting line
If you cannot press down with your thumb for some reason, you can use the handle of the cutter/grooving pliers to open the cut line.
Use the cutting/grooving tool to loosen the art glass panels
The jaws of the pliers can be used to separate glass:
Make sure the feature is flat on top
Place the jaw end along the cut line where you finished the track and gently bend it downward, making sure to hold it firmly.
If the glass doesn’t break, go to the other end of the track and repeat, this time with more “snap” moves.
Your art glass will now shatter into a clean piece
5 circles cut out in stained glass – faces
Now for a little more complexity – two grooves on the sides. The pressing method should not be used to open the partition when you only have a small piece of glass on one side. Using pliers is easier.
Use a grooving pliers for small bits
Choose one of the facades
Marking along the remaining part of the circle with the cutter
Using grooving pliers, align the flat jaw along the cut and “flip” as much as you can with a short, sharp downward motion.
Keep your fingers underneath near the clamp to hold them in place
6 Remove the pieces
Remove small pieces
Cutting/grooving nippers leave small pieces of glass that need to be removed. This is done in two ways, and you’ll probably need to use both.
Snap If the small crumbs are large enough that you can grab them with slotted pliers, you can separate them, as in point 5 above.
Grozing If they are more tenacious, the more rounded pimples make the edges irregular, they must be “stretched”.
Grooved circle edges
Hold the circle below with your free hand
Place the flat part of the jaw of the pliers over the uneven edge and scrape it down and around the edge
The internal serration of the grooving jaw “grooves” or gnaws away uneven workpieces. It takes a bit of practice.
You have to wear glasses for this. ‘
