Multi-read content how to connect plastic pipe to copper pipe

I built some of the equipment myself and am looking to replace some small leaky pipes. While learning how, I want to know how to connect copper pipe to PVC pipe. Based on recommendations from experienced plumbers, here’s what I found.

There are 3 methods for connecting PVC pipes to copper pipes:

  • Copper to PVC Compression Fittings
  • Push Attachments, also known as Sharkbite Attachments
  • The female threaded copper pipe is connected to the male threaded PVC pipe wrapped in Teflon tape.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to get the 100% waterproof and durable seal you want. Below I will explain everything you need to know about the connectionPVCcopper pipe to pipe, as well as the different fittings and when they should be used.

The best accessory for connecting PVC pipes to copper pipes

Since there are now 3 main accessories to connect PVC tocopper pipe, you might be wondering which one is the best to use and why. Here’s what plumbers recommend:

Generally, compression fittings are the best fittings to use for joining PVC pipe to copper pipe. A soldering accessory is also a good choice. However, it requires the use of an open flame which can be dangerous for DIYers. Push fittings are generally not recommended for most PVC and copper pipe connections.

Below is a table showing the best suitability of copper to PVC with a summary of why

Best to Worst PVC-Copper Coupling Shark Bite Typically used short-term only as a power cord for household appliances.

Some devices will be guaranteed for about 10 to 30 years. And so you can replace all the accessories when you replace the device. Therefore, push fittings may be a good choice for some devices like this.

However, for the supply lines – mains water in the house – you will want to use a more durable fitting like a compression fitting or welded joint.

Below I will walk you through how to connect PVC pipe to copper pipe for a compression fitting and a solder fitting.

Compression fittings are best for connecting copper tubing topvc pipe, and also very good at connecting copper to copper. So how do you connect a compression fitting, exactly?

To connect copper tubing to a compression fitting, first slide the nut supplied with the fitting onto the end of the tubing to which you are also attaching the fitting. Then slide the “olive” over the same end. Then place the fitting, tighten the nut on the fitting by hand and tighten it with a wrench.

You don’t need to squeeze as much as you can, but you do need to use just the right amount of force. Tighten like a normal screw so much that it takes a lot of force to loosen it.

When you tighten the nut with an adjustable wrench, it will distort the olive in the pipe. And creates a tight seal between the olives and the seeds.

If you’ve ever attached a garden hose to a garden hose to water your garden or wash your car, a compressor works almost the same way.

Here is a short video showing what a compression element looks like and how it attaches to the pipe:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzDNzWGJnuw

There are a few caveats when using a compression coupling so that it stands the test of time. They are:

Always use a liner on PVC pipes

The liner is a small grooved attachment inside the end of a PVC pipe. It increases the strength of the end of the pipe so that it does not crack. If you don’t, later down the road, it can lead to leaks.

A tampon is very inexpensive and costs around 50 cents. However, they greatly increase the life of your pipes, and a professionalPlumberWe recommend that you always use one on the PVC end of the pipe to which you attach the compression unit.

Use PTFE tape on olives

PTFE tape, commonly known as plumber’s tape, is a special tape that improves the seal between plumbing joints. You should stick about 3 layers of PTFE tape on the olives. You start by tying one end of the tape to the olive, wrapping it around 3 times and then breaking it off.

One experienced plumber mentioned that he had encountered a few callbacks from previous jobs due to leaks while not using PTFE tape. However, when they have used PTFE tape they have never had any issues and highly recommend it. It is also widely used by plumbers.

However, this adds a bit more time to install the accessory. The general procedure is to attach the fitting, then undo it to apply PTFE tape.

After attaching the fitting, the olives will be crimped to the end of the tube and you can then apply PTFE tape to it. After applying the tape, place the rest of the gasket on top and tighten it – by hand and then with a wrench.

How does a compression fitting compare to a weld fitting?

With a solder joint, you solder it to the end of the copper pipe, then glue the end of the PVC pipe. The steps for soldering joints with copper pipes are as follows:

  1. Apply flux to end of pipe
  2. Thread the copper coupler into the end of the pipe
  3. Solder it together

It’s a technical skill; However, it is not difficult to master. Here is a great video I found that explains the details and construction of copper solder fittings and how to do it correctly:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vq6gu2uM6U

How to join PVC to copper pipes without soldering?

Since soldering is a specialized skill, another method can easily be used to connect PVC pipes to copper pipes. But what are the options and how do you go about it?

A compression fitting is the best way to connect PVC to copper pipe without soldering. Another option is the push joint, also known as the shark bite. However, they have a shorter lifespan than compression fittings and therefore push fittings are not recommended for long term use such as supply and drain lines.

Fitting compression joints or welded joints presents much the same difficulty once you know how to make them. However, welding requires more equipment.

An easy way to connect cpvc to copper pipe is using push fit fittings. The pipe is just pushed into the fitting and the pipe locks in place. The fittings also come with a tool to remove the pipe if there needs to be an adjustment.

The standard way of connecting PEX or Copper pipe to PVC is by using threaded adapters. The important thing to remember is that you must use a Male plastic end and a Female metal end. This is because a male metal fitting can crack a female plastic fitting.

When connecting, just use teflon tape or pipe dope and tighten the threaded joints. Connect your PVC side as normal, and use the wide variety of metal connections such as Copper sweat, PEXPress, ProPEX and more.

If you are working with 1/2”, 3/4” or 1” PVC, the easiest way to connect to PEX or Copper is by using the new Sharkbite fitting that connects both sides with no tools or glue. Just push in both sides and you have a secure connection. This method works with schedule 40, 80 and 120 PVC and also works with schedule 40 and 80 CPVC.
