How to measure a rug in 4 easy steps
Step One – Draw
Get a measuring tape, pen and paper. Draw a simple diagram of your house or use a computer program.
I made this drawing on my computer using a simple “paint” program, you can also have a paint program on your computer, look for “accessories” in your program file. A hand drawing will also work.
Drawings don’t have to be perfect, but measurements should be precise. All you need to do is make a simple drawing with all the parts shown in their place.
If you have a two-story house, draw two drawings, one for the superior, one for the subordinate. Draw a separate drawing for the stairs and the floor.
watch my freeFormfor more information on measuring stairs.
Your drawing should look like this:
Step Two – Measure
Now you need to measure each part and record the measurements in your diagram. We will round each measurement to the nearest half foot.If your room is 15 feet 3 inches long, round it up to 15 feet 6 inches or 15.5. (We will use 0.5 decimal instead of 6 inches)
That extra little mat will help make sure you have enough material to get the job done. There’s only one thing worse than not having enough mats to do the job, and that’s being charged for more material than you actually need.
If your room is 15 feet 8 inches long, round it up to 16 feet or 16.0.Always mark the length first, then the width to standardize all measurements. (e.g. 15L x 10.5W)
Q. How do I know what is the length and what is the width?
No problem, just pick a direction and measure each piece the same. See the diagram below for how I measured length east to west and width north to south.First do the length, then the width. Example = kitchen measures 18.0 (length) X 9.5 (width)
This is what it will look like after measuring:
Step 3 – Calculation
Make a list of your measurements and multiply the length by the width of each piece. Then add them together to get the total area of the square. It will look like this:
Length x Width =?
Living room 27.5 x 15.0 = 412.5
Lobby 16.0 x 4.5 = 72.0
Chamber 1 16.0 x 9.5 = 152.0
Bedroom 2 16.0 x 9.5 = 152.0
788.5 square feet
Step Four – Add Additions to Seams
Add 5% to total. This accounts for the seams and other extra mats needed to get the job done.
39 pcs (5%)
827 square feet
To get the total square footage, divide the square by 9.
827 square feet divided by 9 = 88 square feet.
That’s it! If your house is larger or has a difficult floor plan, it will be more difficult for you to measure it yourself.
(If you choose a patterned rug, you’ll need more materials to get the job done, and I recommend hiring a professional to determine how much additional material you need.)
Measure carpet for stairs:
Measuring stairs can be very complicated. Some stairs are sheathed on one or both sides, some stairs must be sheathed which may require additional materials, some stairs are wheel shaped and more difficult to measure, some have grounding which must be considered .
See my free forms page for more information on measuring stairs.
More options to save money:
If you receive multiple offers from carpet retailers and are worried about being overcharged for materials and labor. Consider Hiring a Competent Personcarpet installerto come to your place and measure your needs and discuss all your options.
You can hire an independent professional to measure your home to verify how much material you really need. You can discuss room sizes, rug styles and types, the best rug laying direction, seam placement, and other money-saving options.
Most rug styles are 12 feet wide.
Wider widths are possible (i.e. 13’5″ and 15′ feet wide). These widths are rare and may be a good choice for your home depending on the size and layout of your room.
A qualified rug installer can help you determine if it is cost effective for you to purchase a rug over 12 feet wide.
The cost of hiring a carpet fitter to measure your home can be $75 to $125 or more for a large or complex home, but it can be worth the investment as it can save money. money and give you peace of mind.
How to Find a Qualified Carpet Installer
There will always be material waste, especially if your room is less than 12 feet wide. You must pay for all material waste resulting from the installation of new carpet in your home.
You must have seams if your piece is over 12 feet wide. (unless you order rugs wider than 12 feet)
All similar rugs in adjoining rooms should be laid out in the same direction. The mat lays down in one direction and straightens out in the other. Carpets tend to appear darker in one way and lighter in another. It would be a shame if you didn’t have carpet running in the same direction from room to room.
(If you choose a patterned rug, you’ll need more materials to get the job done, and I recommend getting professional help to determine how much additional material you need.)
To calculate your total square footage for a room, simply multiply the width and length of the room together.
Here’s what a 10 x 10 piece would add up to 13.33 feet: (Remember the rug is 12 feet wide) That’s 12′ wide x 10′ long = 120 square feet divided for 9 = 13.33 yards.
In this case, there will be 2 feet x 10 feet of carpet waste because the room is less than 12 feet wide.
A simple 15 x 20 piece would measure up to 33.33 square feet. That’s 15 x 20 = 300 divided by 9 = 33.33 meters.
In this case, there should be a3 feet feet X 20′ feet. The seam along a wall in this room size as the width of the rug is only 12 feet wide, but this extra material counts as a total of 33.33 yards.
Remember that you are only getting a basic estimate of your material needs, you will most likely need a few feet more or less than what you are calculating here. So don’t be surprised if you are quoted 5-10% more or less than what you calculate here and use my bar chart.
Carpet fitters know how to measure very well. It’s always wise to have a professional measure your home accurately before ordering a rug.
Check out my free bedroom rug inventory chart.
This helpful chart will give you a basic estimate so you know how many yards of carpet you will need to buy before you start buying carpet.
Diagram of the warehouse for room 2
You usually need to buy 12 foot wide mats.
If you have a 10 foot by 10 foot room, you will need to purchase a 12 foot by 10 foot rug. There will be material waste. If you have a room over 12 feet wide, you will need to have seams. This means that you need to order enough material for the seams.
Example: A room 15 feet by 16 feet long would require a 3 foot by 16 foot ramp along one side of the room. Want to see seam placement diagrams?

When you review all of this information, you’ll be looking closely at the logistics of your lifestyle, needs, goals, and budget to arrive at a good estimate of how much it will cost to purchase the right mat. Friend.
You may need to tweak some things a bit to get everything working. Most people are surprised at the price of a good quality rug.
This means you may have to sacrifice longevity to keep the rug within your budget, or you may have to do half the house now and do the other half later when you’ve saved a few bucks.
Most rug dealers determine the total labor cost based on the amount of rug your home needs.
For example, if they determine that you need 100 square feet of carpet, they will also charge you for 100 square feet of mattress and 100 square feet of carpet installation.
However, if you’re really right…only 95 yards of carpet, then you could be overcharged by 5 yards of carpet, 5 yards of mattress, and 5 yards of installation costs, which can cost you up to $250 or more. .My Recommended Carpet Stores Near You
A rug salesman’s biggest fear?
Not ordering enough materials to do your job can spell disaster. It will create a nightmare for you and quite embarrassing for the seller.
For this reason, some sellers intentionally add a few yards of carpet to their estimate to ensure they have enough. This is bad news for your wallet.
You don’t have to pay for more hardware than you really need. To avoid being overcharged for material and labor, you need to know how many mats you need to buy.
Have your home measured by a carpet expert
Note that I said “carpet specialist”, I did not say carpet salesman.
Some rug vendors measure very precisely and can help reduce material waste, saving you money.
Some carpet sellers have absolutely no idea what they are doing and can add hundreds to the cost of your final job.
If you get multiple estimates from different local carpet retailers, you will find that they all have different total measurements or total costs for your project, i.e.ifthey will even tell you what their measurements are.
Some stores only give you one price for the entire job.
This price includes everything from materials and labor to moving furniture and shipping old rugs and carpets.
It would be wise to ask for a simple breakdown of all charges. In particular, the cost of the carpet is indicated separately from the cost of the mattress and the installation on the final invoice.
This is required by the manufacturer if you need to claim warranty. They will want proof of the price you paid for the rug.
Rugs are a big expense and you deserve a fair share
This is why I only support and recommend a few honest and reputable local rug dealers.
These are your neighbors who have been in business for many years, have a good reputation, provideFirst class customer servicecare about your community.
It’s hard to find an honest and reputable carpet store these days! That’s why I’ve created my own special list of local carpet and flooring stores. They offer free estimates, offer fair pricing, have knowledgeable staff, provide honest measurements, and use qualified installers. Are there any recommended carpet stores near me?
