Multi-read content how to make a bow tie for a cat
Everyone likes to get ready for the holidays. Even our furry friends! Okay, maybe THEY really don’t care, but we really think they’re cute! But taking your pooch apart can sell out fast! Martha Stewart’s designer necklaces are cute, but pretty girly, $15 for a necklace!? Are you a meow kitten, aren’t you? !
If your little fur ball looks like my shaggy, tumbled kitten, those cute knots won’t stay intact for long. (Seriously, I’ve never heard of a cat willingly playing in the mud. That’s weird.) Hemi goes through collars and bow ties at least every few months. I imagine with some dogs it could be even faster.
I’m sick of paying high prices for collars and design choices for cats are never as good as for dogs. I can buy a dog collar, but cat collars are generally trendy and I prefer this security measure. So I started making my own no-sew kitten neck bows a few years ago. I get lots of compliments on them and they always look so festive and cute. It’s time for a new batch for the holidays, which means it’s time for crafts!
These no-sew neck knots are so easy and quick to make. I assembled these nodes in less than an hour. They’ll be making furry panties for all of Hemi’s furry friends!

How to Make a No-Sew Dog Collar Knot
fabric glue and/or hot glue
elastic hair band
1. Cut the strip of fabric
Cut the fabric strips to the size you need. The pieces above are 4″ X 8″ for the arch and 1″ X 8″ for the center wrap. This makes for a 4″ X 1 1/2″ bow, which is the perfect size for cats, small to medium sized dogs, babies and toddlers.
I have found that standard cotton fabric works great for this as it is well structured and holds its shape when you fold it. A thicker velor fabric will also work. Fabrics that are too shiny or too smooth often look flimsy and the glue is difficult to bond. I usually just choose packs of quilt squares because I can get so many fun patterns in one pack.
Custom Size GuidelinesIf you want to make a larger bow, just measure the length you want your bow to be and cut the fabric to double that length. I cut the height of the fabric to 1/2 the length and found that to be a good ratio for the knots. If you want a longer/bigger bow, measure the height and cut your fabric to 3 times that measurement (since you are folding it in thirds). For example, if you want a bow that measures 6 inches X 2 inches, your large fabric square should measure 12 inches X 6 inches. I cut the smaller center strip the same length as the height of the large strip and just eye width apart. Again, you’re folding this in thirds, so I’ll say 1 1/2″ – 2″ for this example.
2. Fold and glue
Place your small piece of fabric face down and fold it about a third of its length (it doesn’t have to be exact) and glue each side to the center. Let dry. I use fabric glue for this step because hot glue can be too hard or cause the fabric to come off.
Fold your large piece of fabric over a third of its length and glue each side down. Then fold the large strip in half, mark the center and unfold. Bring each end of the strip to the center point and tape it down, making your strip 1/2 its original size with the loose ends in the middle.
Pin the large strip in the center and tuck it in the center to create a bow. Use your fingers to hold the bow shape, gently release and put a few drops of glue in the middle, then squeeze them together.
Use a clothespin to hold your bow together and let it dry for a few minutes. It doesn’t have to be completely dry, just sticky enough to hold its shape while you work with it.
3. Attaches to the collar
Take a headband and fasten the middle part tightly. Secure by dabbing glue on the back of the bow leaving a loop of yarn on each side. I usually use hot glue for this step because it dries faster.
Take the small strip of fabric and glue one end to the back of the bow. Wrap the small strip around the pinned center of the bow and the hair band 2-3 times to create the center of the bow. Glue the strip in place at the back of the bow (so the free end is out of sight) and cut off the excess length. Let everything dry and cool completely.
Gently thread the collar through the two loops of the headband to tie the knot to the collar. Drag it into the desired position and viola! You now have a dapper pooch or a beautiful cat!
These no-sew fabric bows aren’t just great for pets. You can also make these knots for toddlers! Attach them to a headband or bobby pin to create customizable hair accessories for girls. Tie them to a ribbon to tie around the neck of a stuffed animal or use them as scrapbook decoration or on a gift!
Sounds good, Hemingway! Wear it with that bow!
