How to Get Rid of Weevils

No matter how careful you areclean your kitchen, you can always open the cupboard one day and find them crawling with small insects. Unlike insects that enter through doors, windows and crevices, weevils enter your grocery store. The adults chew the grain and lay eggs, making it virtually impossible to tell if you’ve purchased a bag full of weevil larvae.

Of the approximately 60,000 species of weevils, the ones that threaten your fat are the rice weevil and corn weevil (dark brown with red or yellow spots, about 1/16 inch long) and the largest species dark brown cane weevils. black beetle. But never fear, this step-by-step guide will teach you how to effectively get rid of weeds.

STEP 1: Discard any food that has not been covered.

By the time you spot the weevils, chances are they’ve already infected other foods nearby. So to get rid of it, you need to clear your cupboard of unsealed dry foods, including oats, rice, barley, flour, cornmeal, pasta — even canned dinners. Rice weevils often hatch larvae in sealed bags of rice, so check your pantry items – even sealed packages – carefully.

Don’t stop there: if canned goods contain an airtight bag inside, discard the can and save the bag (label the bag with a seal).permanent markerto help you remember what’s inside). Do the same for canned goods that weevils won’t eat, such as gelatin, because the insects may have entered the can and then could come out to destroy other packaging in the pantry.

STEP 2: Freeze salvageable produce to kill weevils.

Place usable food in the freezer for 4-7 days, this will kill any weevil larvae that may be hiding in the product. Items you think won’t survive freezing—dried herbsfor example, may lose their spiciness — may be placed in a sealed bag or container and stored elsewhere. Before putting anything back on the shelf, go to step 3.

STEP 3: Take everything out of the cabinet and vacuum.

Thoroughly clean the pantry and cupboards. Everything needs to come out – cans, spices, foil, whatever you keep in there – to get rid of the weevils. Vacuum the shelves, making sure to reach nooks and crannies, then take the vacuum out to empty the container.

Wipe everythingvacuum(box included) withdisinfect chemicalbefore bringing him back inside. Before replacing items, clean your cabinets, as described in the next step.

STEP 4: Thoroughly clean your shelves.

Use warm soapy water, white vinegar or a non-toxic household cleaner, then allow to dry completely. Again, focus on corners and cracks where termites can hide. Using harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia will have no effect on the pest.

Also, avoidinsecticide sprayin cupboards and pantry where you store food. Many types are ineffective against weevils. Some owners have reported using non-toxic enzymatic cleaners such asERADICATOR of naturewhich you can find at home centers and online retailers.

No matter which cleaner you choose, be sure to follow all of the manufacturer’s safety precautions. Some cleaners are toxic, so be sure to let them dry completely before putting items back in the closet.

Keep weevils out of the barn

The four steps mentioned above can repel weevils in an instant. However, it is important that you appreciate the food, including any food that you have placed in the freezer, before putting it back in the freezer or using it for the first time. It may take a weevil life cycle or more to completely get rid of the pests in your pantry.

Since all innocent-looking dry food packaging can contain weevils, the best way to prevent another infestation is tosealand place dry staples, such as rice, beans, lentils, quinoa, raspberries, pasta, and cereal in the freezer 4-7 days after purchase before storing (or just need) store nuts and cereals in the refrigeratorfreezerif you have space).

If there’s no room in your freezer, another option is to store these items in glass, metal, or thick plastic that’s covered separately.stored food containers. If these suggestions seem exaggerated, know that it only takes one female weevil to trigger another invasion.

Frequently Asked Questions About How To Get Rid Of Weevils

You should make an effort to eradicate and prevent weevils in your kitchen. It helps to know what attracts insects and how they move, so we’ve answered these and other questions below.

Q: What are weeds attracted to?

Tiny insects like dry foods like grains and cereals. Rice weevils enjoy a variety of grains in addition to rice, including barley, wheat, corn, oats, and rye. Weevils also like seeds and nuts. Weevils thrive in warm to hot conditions, which can further increase their numbers.

Q: Is it possible to put weevils in sealed packages?

Sometimes weevils enter produce early in the food chain, such as during harvest or storage. Weevils can also chew through paper and plastic wrappers to get to their meals.

Once inside the box, they can live undetected as they pass through additional plastic or paper barriers. If possible, avoid buying packages with holes or other openings to avoid bringing insects home from the grocery store.

Q: What is the lifespan of weevils?

The lifespan of weevils – from egg to adult – can reach about 45 days. The adult rice weevil can live up to 6 months. At this time, a female weevil can lay up to 300 eggs. She flavors the seeds or kernels, then seals them with a secretion. The worm eats the seeds or pits from the inside out, leaving only the husk.

The grain weevil (also known as the wheat weevil) has a lifespan roughly equal to the lifespan. In short, weevil larvae can destroy grain while they grow, mate and lay eggs safely in a sealed grain bag.

If you’ve opened up a bag of flour or a box of cereal and seen disgusting bugs crawling around, then you’re not alone. These are pantry pests, or stored product pests, and they’re more common than you might think.

These are insects that will infest dry foods typically stored in boxes or bags. These are items like cereal, dry pasta, corn, flour, rice and other grains, spices, bird seed, and even dried fruit and dry pet food.

The most common pantry pests you will see are indian meal moths, grain beetles, and weevils.

To confirm pantry pest activity, look in or around your pantry or where foodstuff is stored. Having bugs in the kitchen is pretty common, so spotting a tiny bug crawling on your countertops is not enough; you really want to focus on the stored food. The best way to confirm activity is to look for the adult pantry pests themselves. So keep an eye out for moths flying in or around the pantry and bugs crawling around in stored food. Be sure to also check any cupboards, drawers, and shelving.

Once you have confirmed pantry pest activity, it’s time to begin treatment. The first thing you need to do is throw out the contaminated food. If one package is infested, it’s safe to assume they all are.

Vacuum all cracks and crevices in the pantry shelving or cabinets. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum.

Next, use Novacide aerosol. Novacide is an aerosol insecticide that is labeled to control common pantry pests like rice weevils, saw toothed grain beetles, and moths. You’re going to just spot treat the back and sides of the shelving where there might be cracks and crevices. Spot spray the shelving in quick bursts so a fine mist is applied.

Next, use a Pro Pest Pantry Moth and Beetle Trap. This is a ready to use, pesticide-free trap that uses a pheromone scented glue board to trap pantry pests. Simply remove the protecting paper from the pre-baited glue and fold the trap into a pyramid shape.

Place the trap on the pantry shelving where it won’t get smashed and will be left generally undisturbed. The trap’s pheromone bait will lure adult pantry pests to the trap where they will get stuck in the glue.

Finally, for stubborn pantry pests that slip by previous treatments, use Pyrid. This is an aerosol insecticide that is labeled for many pests and delivers a quick kill. Unlike Novacide, Pyrid does not leave any residual and is instead used as a knockdown spray. This can be applied as a direct or space spray to any pests that remain in the pantry.

Once you’ve finished treating your pantry, it’s time to start thinking about prevention. If you can, buy only about a week or two’s worth of food at a time. Pantries that hold foods for extended periods of time are more likely to see an infestation.

When buying dry foods at the grocery store, take a look at the packaging. If you see any holes, rips, tears, or other openings, like our bag of grains, don’t buy that package.

And when storing food, it is best to keep it in tight-fitting or sealed containers. Put cereals, rice, and flour in containers that can be air-sealed. Even plastic tupperware can help. This is especially true for dry pet food. Pet food and bird seed are often overlooked and extremely conducive for pantry pests, so put your pet’s food in containers.

Rice weevils are smaller than even grains of rice, growing only to be as large as 3 to 4.6 millimeters in length. They have dark brown bodies, and you may even notice some lighter brown patches if you can see them up close enough. You can tell a weevil apart from other pests like a grain beetle because you’ll notice the weevil’s long snout. It’s hard to miss, even when they’re that small.

To confirm rice weevil activity, look in or around your pantry or where foodstuff is stored. You may see a few rice weevils wandering the shelves, but focus on finding the source of your infestation. Look inside bags or boxes of grains and other stored foods. Remember, since rice weevils spend their developmental stages within grains, you’ll only see adults during your inspection. Be sure to also check any cupboards, drawers, and shelving.

After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment.

Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry.

Before starting your treatment, you need to clear out your pantry. Start by throwing out boxed and bagged foodstuffs. Next, vacuum all cracks and crevices in the pantry shelving or cabinets. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum. Rice weevils may be found in these tight spaces as they travel from place to place. Be sure to throw out the vacuum’s bag or clean the canister when you’re done. Then wipe down the pantry shelves with water to clean up any food residue. Do not use any strong cleaners or bleach, as these will keep pests away from the pesticides you’ll soon apply.

Once you’ve cleared and cleaned your pantry, you’ll need to use insecticide aerosols labeled for rice weevils like Pyrid and Novacide. Pyrid is an insecticide aerosol that’s often used as a flushing agent, and it’s great to treat tight cracks and crevices where rice weevils or other pests may be hiding. To use Pyrid as a crack and crevice treatment, just remove the white applicator, attach the provided red applicator, and make sure the straw is firmly affixed in the spout. Shake the can, and spray along the lengths of any cracks and crevices in your pantry where rice weevils could be hiding. Next, apply Novacide. Novacide is another insecticide aerosol, but this one contains an insect growth regulator, or IGR. Just shake the can, hold it upside-down, and spray 1-2 inches or product every couple of inches.
