Multi-read content how to find lost items in washing machine

Devastated by a pandemic of mismatched socks and random objects? Well, don’t give up. You can still find their companions. After all, there are a number of practical reasons why people lose things on laundry days.

Maybe they fall under the furniture or behind the kitchen, separate from the splint, disappear into faded clothes and fall on the clothesline. Or, they may just be hiding in the back of your top-loading washer, long after the cycle has finished.

So how do you find lost items in the washing machine? To answer that question, we’ve shared some great tips on how your stuff gets lost and where you can find it. Try these steps to recover lost items from your washing machine.

How to find lost items in the top loading washing machine

Blank test

First, make sure the machine is turned off and preferably empty. Then shine a torch or flashlight on the drum to potentially find hidden items in the back. Carefully turn the inner drum over and check the small holes for small objects.

Rotate the drum and check the resistance, then slowly lift the rubber seal to create a space between the seal and the metal lip inside the drum. Spin the drum while keeping a space to check for lost items between the outer and inner drums.

Use a flexible, thin object such as a steel pipe cleaner or cable tie to gently work around the outside of the inner drum trying to detect any lost objects.

Check the chimney

You will need to open the back of the washing machine to check the heater. The heater is usually in a small panel under the large drum motor. Pull the control panel outward to access the heater.

The panel looks like a bent metal tube, similar to the inside of a radiator. Some items can get stuck in the heater, such as socks and small clothes. You should also consider spinning the drum and using a torch to look into the heater housing to inspect items.

Turn the heater back on by sliding it back into place. Then press firmly to make sure it is snug against the mount.

Check the septic tank suction pipe

This is probably the hardest task on this list. To check the drain hose, you need to place the washing machine on its side so that the hose is accessible from underneath the appliance. You may want to get help with this, if possible. After all, your lost sock doesn’t really deserve to be strangled.

Remove the base plate from your washing machine. Next, locate the sump suction hose, which looks like a flexible hose that fits over the metal tub of the machine. Release the clamp where the faucet is attached to the tub and turn on your flashlight. You should look at the underside of the drum.

Carefully check for lost items and remove them through this hole. By shining your torch through the holes inside the drum of the machine, you can see an object and push it through the opening in the sump tube, holding the object.

How to remove stuck items from the washing machine?

Now that we have discussed tips for finding lost items in top loading washing machines, the next question is how to remove the stuck items from the machine.

use your hand

As long as the machine is off and empty, and you’re not spinning the drums wildly, you can safely pick up the sock that slips out of the back of the machine on your own.

You can also use your fingers to remove bra straps or other small objects from the puncture, but this can be a little tricky without tools.

If there are clothes stuck between the outer and inner drums, you can remove them with your fingers if the object is large enough. However, if the material is fragile, you can tear it up and leave half of it in the machine.

Use a screwdriver

Reaching items stuck between the outer and inner drums requires more leverage. So arm yourself with a screwdriver and angle the tip upwards to gently create a bigger gap than anyone can just do.

When the space is large enough, it will be easier for you to gently remove objects with pliers or your fingers. You can also consider using rope to secure a chain or loop of fabric.

After removing the items, rotate the drum and make sure there is an even gap between the seal and the drum. If the gap seems uneven, use a wooden mallet to push the drum back into place. You don’t want to end up with a space large enough for your items to sink into.

Use pliers

Note that some items such as thin metal chains tend to be too slippery to reach with your fingers. If such objects get stuck in your inner drum, get a pair of pliers and use them to squeeze and carefully squeeze the object out of the perforations.

Conclusion

Your top-loading washing machine might be a crafty snob that likes to swallow things and hide them in its weird compartments. Therefore, you will have to check different areas to find your missing items. I hope the above steps helped you recover your anonymous belongings.

If that doesn’t work and you can’t find items that you’re sure are stuck somewhere in the washing machine, you may need to decipher the tub itself. This is a more complicated task and you may just need to hire a professional at this stage.
