If there’s one question I get the most during the holiday season, it’s “How do you decorate your Christmas tree?” Well, I’m NOT an expert at decorating Christmas trees, BUT…I have a few tricks up my sleeve that make it easier for me to achieve that perfect look that I love every year! I thought it would be fun to share this with you step by step!
Have you ever heard the saying “There are many ways to skin a cat”? Well, there are many ways to decorate a Christmas tree, of course! It’s just my way of doing MAIN, and I find it’s the easiest way for me!
First of all, this advice is purely for artificial plants. No matter how beautiful or weird your tree is, it will eventually get covered, so even if it looks shabby, it won’t last long!
Today I’m using a tree I just made for a client. I decided to take pictures along the way so I could show you the process!
Once your tree is set up and all your lights are in place, we’ll start with the KEY to a complete tree – RIBBON! The easiest way I find is to start with a roll of extra wide decorative mesh tape or another type of wide tape. Decorative grids are so easy to work with! This reel is $5 at Hobby Lobby and it’s fully sold out in 2 places where I want it to be.
DO NOT cut the ribbon. Simply start at the top of the tree, gather the ends and wrap them around a segment of branches deep in the tree (they are often roped off to make wrapping easier) and start down the tree gathering large bouquets. together and stick them to the tree and wrap them around a branch. When you get to the lower part of the tree, cut the ribbon and plug the lower part of the tree and wrap it around. Then start again on another area of the tree. Keep doing this until you’re ready to start with another type of tape or you’re done using the tape on the tree. Use the same process with your next ribbon, if you choose to use 2 (or more) different types.
Here’s what it will look like when you’re done with the ribbon.
After the ribbon is done, I always start with my GREATEST decorations and signs. This is another important factor in creating a complete tree. Use awesome items! ** You do not need to use decorations. Creation! Use fun signs, frames, anything! ** Simply hang them all over the tree in different places to make it balanced.
I used some really big decorations on his tree, as well as this really cute snowman wall hanger I found!
After using your largest decorations, I just continued to go through all my decorations from largest to smallest. I like to hang all the little things at the end (like small balls or ice cubes), to fill the space.
After using all my actual decorations, I went to my big “choice” to make my underwear. I know people have all kinds of ways to exercise their heads. Some people use a star, angel, snowman hat, etc. but I like to use large random selections to stand out from the top. That’s just what I love the most!
Simply gather your selections and start pasting them at the top, arranging them however you like. There’s no rhyme or excuse for what I’m doing – I’m just working on it until I’m okay with it! I don’t care, everything is perfectly balanced. If I like madness, I go there. Have fun with it!
If I have any big machetes left after making the topper, I just stick them in the tree where it looks like it needs a little something. This gives the tree an extra dimension.
Once the big woodpeckers ran out, I moved on to my smaller woodpeckers and started digging them into the trees to fill in the gaps. These can be real spikes or just small clips, like the white snowflakes in the photo. These grafts are just small, inexpensive grafts that help make your tree look fuller.
And There you go ! That’s it, friends! Look at your tree and admire your work! If you don’t like something, move it! If there are empty spaces, fill them with small ribbons or other cheaper decorations that you can put around!
It was pretty easy, right?? What do you think? Do you have any other tricks to make decorating trees easier?
