Multi-read content how many watts does a clothes dryer use

If you’re like 80% of households in the United States, you have a clothes dryer somewhere that you use almost every time you wash a bunch of clothes. When moving wet clothes and towels from the washer to the dryer, you might briefly wonder how much electricity each load will cost. How much does it cost to dry clothes without a clothesline?

Clothes dryers make up a significant portion of a home’s total electricity consumption, although they are single-use appliances that aren’t used most of the time like a refrigerator. WhenThe EPA has reviewed various home appliances, the tumble dryer is the biggest consumer of energy.

Annual electricity consumption

Clothes dryer – 769 kWh

Washing machine – 590kWh

Dishwasher – 206kWh

Refrigerator – 596kWh

That’s right. An average clothes dryer uses more electricity than an average refrigerator. But the amount of electricity used by one dryer won’t be the same as another – even if it’s the exact same model.

When it comes to calculating electricity consumption, it’s not always straightforward. There are a number of variables you need to consider that can increase or decrease your dryer’s power consumption.

6 Things That Affect a Clothes Dryer’s Electricity Use

Many energy factors come into play when the dryer is running. Here are six factors that have the most influence on a clothes dryer’s electricity consumption.

Dryer age

As with most machinery and equipment, the older the dryer, the worse its performance. Most of the dryers used are between 2 and 9 years old.

The capacity of the dryer

Clothes dryers usually range between 2,000 and 6,000 watts. This means that a clothes dryer uses between 2 and 6 kilowatts per hour.

ENERGY STAR qualified

This is yoursENERGY STAR Certified Clothes Dryer? If so, it will consume about 20% less electricity than a standard machine. The EPA notes that these energy-efficient dryers come with energy-saving features like advanced humidity sensors that help reduce run time.

Dryer usage time

If you plan to use the weather and pick the right time, you can technically run the dryer without using electricity – at least you won’t be charged for it. Some people concerned about minimizing their electricity costs will wait for free time (usually after midnight) to dry their clothes.

Even though you can avoid loading, your dryer is still consuming electricity. The time of day will not affect the amount of electricity used.

Dryer settings

Your dryer settings can be used to be as energy efficient as possible. In general, a low heat setting that runs longer will use less electricity than a high heat setting for a shorter duration. Using the cool down cycle setting is another way to use less electricity by taking advantage of the warm air inside the machine. Also, always use Sensor Dry instead of Timed Dry if that’s an option.

Download sizes

You’ve probably heard that it’s best to fill your dishwasher before it runs to maximize its efficiency. The same goes for the dryer. The dryer should be full but not too full. Clothes take longer to dry when the dryer is overloaded or the load is too small.

What’s in the load can also make a difference. You should dry towels and heavy clothes separately from lighter clothes, as combining them will extend the drying time.

How to calculate the cost of running your dryer

Now that you have a better idea of what affects a clothes dryer’s electricity use, let’s see how to calculate how much energy a clothes dryer uses.

Get dryer capacity

As long as you know the wattage of your dryer, you can run the numbers to get a rough estimate of the kWh consumption. (If you don’t know the wattage, look it up on the UL label.)

Drying time clock

Time a few laundry items to see how long each item takes to dry. This will tell you what the average drying time is per load.

Convert drying time duration to percentage

To calculate kilowatt hours, you need to convert drying time to a percentage of an hour. Let’s say you have a really efficient dryer that can dry a bunch of clothes in 30 minutes. That would be 0.5 or 50% of an hour.

Multiply the percentage of drying time by the capacity

Now for the math. First you will multiply the percentage of drying time by the capacity of the machine. For this example, we’ll assume the wattage of the dryer is 4000 watts.

0.5 x 4000 = 2000 watts

Divide by 1000

From there, you can convert watts to kilowatt hours by dividing the total by 1000 (there are 1000 watts in 1 kilowatt hour).

2000 watts / 1000 = 2 kilowatt hours

In this example, the dryer is using 2 kilowatt hours per load. If you know your kWh level, you can also determine the approximate cost of drying per load by multiplying the kilowatt hours by the price per kWh.Find out the kWh prices currently available through Major Energy.
