Why clean wooden kitchen cabinets?

Of course, cleaning your kitchen cabinets is part of a clean house. But did you know that with proper cleaning and maintenance, kitchen cabinets can last a long time – up to50 years? Impressive isn’t it? Longer life than most kitchen components includingHousehold items, counter and sink in the kitchen. Oops, 50 years older than me, and I’m pretty old!

But if you’re not rightto keepyour kitchen cabinets, they can wear out after only 20 to 30 years. And then you will consider the alternative…

And replacing the cabinet could represent60-70%Complete kitchen renovation. Consider an average full kitchen renovation that spans approximately$24,000, that means about $15,000 goes into kitchen cabinets.

This cost is not negligible.

So, for me, it’s quite motivating to make sure I’m doing everything I can to keep my kitchen cabinets clean and maintained.

My cooking is what sold me on this house. And I love my kitchen cabinets. These are beautiful, high quality Thomasville kitchen cabinets. This kitchen is what sold me on this house. The moment I walked in there, I knew this would be my home.

Kitchen cabinets with double ovensDouble oven?!?! Paradise!

But I have trouble getting into the kitchen. First, I’m a really messy kitchen. And I have 3 precious little monsters (sorry, I mean my daughter 😉) who would love to help their mom make her kitchen more messy. Grease, dirt, and sticky kids’ fingerprints quickly accumulated to embarrassing proportions on my kitchen cabinets. And with a hectic lifestyle, it can be hard to keep them clean.

Dirty kitchen cabinets with Lord knows what on them #dirtykitchen #cleankitchenThe closet has trash and dirt

I don’t know exactly how old my cabinets are. These were clearly not the originals of our 1916 home. The family who purchased the home said they were not doing major repairs, so we know they were installed before 2003.

This means they are approaching (or already approaching) the 20 year mark where wear and tear begins to show. I have to make sure I take care of them properly to make sure they reach 50! So I reached out to online cleaning experts to make sure I was cleaning my kitchen cabinets the best way possible.

Who are the cleaning experts?

The online sources I found varied – from major cable networks and national cabinetmakers to smaller scale bloggers. In alphabetical order, these are (roll drum…..)

  1. HGTV
  2. – major cable network site.
  3. Cheap every day
  4. – blogs, bestsellers and compilations from award-winning authors
  5. Grapes and Splendor

  7. a spruce
  8. – Top 10 biggest online lifestyle magazines
  9. Thomasville
  10. – the largest cabinet manufacturer in North America founded over 100 years ago

After reading expert articles, I was amazed at the number of recommended methods to best clean wooden kitchen cabinets.

Before we begin, I have two recommendations for you to read:

  1. Although I cut and pasted directly from these sites (with minor edits), I recommend looking at the original source.
  2. When cleaning your cabinets with a new method or product, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area of your cabinet. Wait at least a few hours to ensure there is no damage and to avoid damaging the finish of the cabinet.

The best way to clean wooden kitchen cabinets

1.HGTV

Posted by HGTV”How to Clean Wood Cabinets”There were two different strategies for dealing with general kitchen cabinets and for deep cleaning.

General hygiene :

  • Vinegar is the most natural cleaner for cleaning greasy cabinets. Mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and warm water and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the cabinet, let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe it down with a soft cloth.
  • This step is optional. Add a few drops of dish soap to the vinegar and water solution to clean extremely dirty cabinets.

Deep cleaning:

  • Make a mixture of vinegar and salt. Dip a toothbrush into the mixture and gently scrub the yellowed area. Don’t scrub too hard and don’t use steel wool, as it will scratch the wood. Rinse off the mixture with clean water and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • You can also put baking soda on a damp sponge and rub it into the stain. Use a soft toothbrush or nylon bristle brush to avoid scratching the surface of the cabinet

After cleaning, HGTV also recommends future stain protection:

  • Mix vegetable oil and vinegar in equal proportions and gently apply to the surface of the cabinet. Rub with a soft, clean cloth. Polish until it shines.

2. Cheap daily price

Mary Hunt, the columnist behindCheap every day, answered readers’ questions about what type of cleaner to use for wood kitchen cabinets with the following response:

  • If you’re looking for a commercial product to clean those cabinets, you can never beat the effectiveness of
  • real orange polish
  • to melt away grease, dirt, polish and wax buildup, leaving fresh scent and beauty where it belongs. It costs quite a bit to do all your cooking, if you decide to go the commercial route.

But she goes ahead and recommends the following homemade concoctions to clean up those wooden kitchen cabinets. Once clean, nothing needs to be added to polish or protect.

General hygiene :

  • In a spray bottle (I use these 16 oz bottles to make homemade cleaners), mix 2 tbsp olive oil, 4 tbsp white vinegar, and just enough warm water to fill the jar (about 2 cups). Shake to mix then spray on each front door or drawer. Rub with a soft cloth to remove dirt, then buff again for a nice shiny finish. Before each spray, shake the bottle to mix the oil.

Deep cleaning:

  • In a small bowl, measure 1 part vegetable oil to 2 parts baking soda (for example, 2 tablespoons oil to 4 tablespoons baking soda – or 1 cup oil to 2 cups baking soda, depending on the size of your job).
  • Use your fingers to mix this mixture into a thick paste. Sweep some of this over the surface of that dirty cabinet, paying particular attention to the areas near the handles which are subject to a lot of handling and human contact.
  • Rub with a soft cloth, sponge or fingertips to allow the mixture to penetrate the seeds. Use an old toothbrush to get into every nook and cranny. The mixture is very thick and when you start rubbing and brushing it will fall down with a lot of dirt.
  • Wipe with a soft cloth then come back to admire your beautiful work.

3. Grapes and Splendor

Blogger Grapes and Splendor has another homemade recipe forThe best way to clean your kitchen cabinets without damaging them!

General hygiene :

  • Mix a solution of 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon of toothpaste, and 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Dip a sponge or rag into the solution and use it to scrub the dirty areas of the cabinet.

Deep cleaning:

  • Put about 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap or oil soap on the scrubbing sponge. Lightly dampen the sponge and gently rub it over the cabinet to create a lather. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth with cool water in it. Then dry with a microfiber cloth.
  • Make a paste of the baking soda and water, apply to the oily area rubbing in a circular motion, lightly press the grease stain to use the abrasive baking soda to get the grease out and let sit for 10 minutes. minute. Using a clean cloth dampened with water, wipe off the baking soda mixture.

4. Spruce

InTips for cleaning kitchen cabinet grease, Spruce treats it differently than other sites in that they are geared towards products rather than home solutions with one exception (which I listed first).

  • Hot water and washing up liquid
  • : Dish soap is an alkaline product that effectively removes grease stains, especially when mixed with hot water. Mix a drop or two of grease-cutting dish soap in a bucket of very hot water (as hot as you can stand it) and use a nylon scouring pad to remove grease stains from the cabinet. Keep the water hot and apply light pressure to the nylon pad to avoid scratching the surface. Rinse and dry the cabinet when you’re done
  • Goo is gone:
  • Be sure to wear rubber gloves, then apply a commercial Goo Gone cleaner to the grease stain and let it sit for a minute or two. Heat a damp microfiber towel in the microwave for 35 seconds, then use it to quickly wipe away the grease. Finally, clean the area with mild soap and water, then dry completely.
  • Orange Oil Multi-Purpose Cleaner:
  • If your cabinets are really dirty, leave the cleaner on for up to 10 minutes after spraying. Then wipe off the cleaner with a warm, damp cloth.
  • Wood cleaners containing Brazilian carnauba wax:
  • Carnauba wax is an ingredient commonly found in high quality wood cleaners and polishes. An excellent product, called
  • Magic cabinet and wood cleaning machine,
  • is an injection pump application.

5. Thomasville

Thomasville Cabinetry stamp. I love my kitchen cabinets! #thomasvilleThomasville Cabinetry stamped on my cabinet

This national manufacturer and distributor of kitchen cabinets offers the following cleaning tips on its parent company’s website fromOwner’s Care and Cleaning Guide.

  • Usually a soft, clean cotton cloth – or a microfiber cloth for laminate cabinets and high gloss cabinets – dampened with warm water will do the trick!
  • To combat grime, a mild dishwashing liquid (not dishwasher detergent) mixed with warm, clean water will help remove dirt and grease. 5% dishwashing liquid and 95% water is a good ratio.
  • After cleaning stained or painted cabinets, wipe them down with a clean, damp cloth and be sure to dry damp surfaces with another soft, clean cloth.
  • Your wardrobe does not require waxing and we do not recommend that you do so. Over time, waxing and polishing compounds can build up on cabinet surfaces, forming a dull, streaked, or yellowed finish. Wax buildup is really hard to remove – no one has time for that!

Vinegar and olive oil: good or bad?

You will notice that some homemade solutions for cleaning wooden kitchen cabinets contain vinegar and/or olive oil. Before starting this blog, I bought all my cleaning products at the store. But as I researched and learned more about cleaning my home, vinegar seemed like a great alternative to homemade cleaning products. It is commonly available at home, inexpensive, natural, and resistant to bacteria, mold, and dirt.

Ways to Clean Kitchen Cabinets - make them shiny and new again! #cleaningexperts #cleaning

But interestingly, there seems to be an argument against using vinegar and olive oil to clean wooden kitchen cabinets. According to some cleaning experts, includingspring cottage, vinegar and oil are not a good choice for cleaning wooden kitchen cabinets. Why?

  • The vinegar
  • It is a paint and varnish remover and can destroy coatings on many other surfaces. Each time it is used, it creates a finer surface by slowly melting furniture finishes.
  • Olive oil
  • It is a non-drying oil, so when applied to wood it remains runny and damaged. This will eventually create a stink and attract harmful bacteria.

Are Vinegar and Olive Oil Good or Bad for Kitchen Cabinets? Honestly, I don’t know what to think.

So I Tried The 5 Ways To Clean My Kitchen Cabinets

These 5 options are completely different from me for cleaning wooden kitchen cabinets. For years, I’ve automatically turned to one of my favorite products for cleaning my wood kitchen cabinets – Murphy’s Oil Soap. I use diluted Murphy Oil Soap throughout the house – I wash my wood floors andclean the woodwork and baseboards of my house.

So I was intrigued by the fact that no expert directly recommended Murphy’s Oil Soap. I went straight to the website of the Colgate-Palmolive company, the makers of Murphy’s Oil Soap. And it looks like I used the wrong product. Well, that’s a bit wrong.

Murphy Oil SoapAmazon.co.uk

Although I only use Murphy Oil Soap to clean stains and grease from my kitchen cabinets, I should have used it in two steps.Murphy Oil Soapto restore the wood to its natural shine AFTER the first layer of dirt has disappeared.

Sorry.

I decided to test each cleaning method on one of my kitchen cabinets to get a feel for the best way to clean wooden kitchen cabinets.

HGTV and Cheapskate Daily

I tried bothHGTV Vinegar/Water MixtureandCheapskate Daily Olive Oil/Vinegar/Water Mix for General Cleaning. Although they both do a great job of cleaning my cabinets, I struggled with the lingering vinegar smell. It reminds me of Easter when we used vinegar to color the eggs.

Grapes and Spendor

Baking soda toothpaste to clean cabinets - recipe from Grapes and Spendor #grapesandspendor #grimykitchenDIY Kitchen Cabinet Cleaning Recipe from Grape and Spendor

Then I triedRaisins and Spendor baking soda/toothpaste/water mix. While the smell was more pleasant, the smell of toothpaste reminded me to call the dentist for a checkup. I think some people will really like this method, but it’s not for me. And again, like HGTV and Everyday Cheapskate, it cleaned grease and grime from my cabinets.

Spruce and Thomasville

Abovea spruce. If you remember, The Spruce recommended several commercial cleaning products, likeGoo is gone, orange oil cleanser, andcanruaba wax. Goo Gone which I have used many times in DIY projects includingRemove stubborn glue to restore old wooden rocking chair. It is an effective and powerful cleaner for spot cleaning.

But for general cleaning, I like The Spruce’s idea of just good old dish soap and water. (This is the same method offered by Thomasville, who made my kitchen cabinets). Why? On reflection, that makes sense. Dishwashing liquid is an alkaline product that effectively removes grease stains. Most of the dirt on my cabinets comes from grease or food. So if dish soap can cut those on my pots and pans, it will also work on your cabinets.

Wait a minute….. Wasn’t that Dawn’s catchphrase?”Dawn Cuts Fat Your Way”Insert fun 1990sDawn dish soap ad from YouTubethis…..

(Note for those of you who remember the 1980s and 1990s – Do you think the actress in the blue suit also plays Andrea Zuckerman from Beverly Hills 90210…..do you agree?)

What’s the best thing to do for cleaning kitchen cabinets?

My favorite way to clean my kitchen cabinets is to use Dawn Dish Soap Mix to remove grease stains, then rinse one last time with Murphy Oil Soap. I call this the “Thomasville/Spruce Plus” method.

For overall cleaning, I combine 1/2 teaspoon of Dawn Dish Soap with 8 cups of water in a bucket of hot water. I washed the cabinet with my favorite sponge (Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge) dipped in the solution. For areas that need special attention due to grease or dirt, or intricate cabinet details, I scrub with an old toothbrush.
