How to Remove Water Stains from Wood

Photo: istockphoto.com

Wooden furniture is beautiful but impervious to everyday wear and tear. To maintain their appearance, new and old wooden furniture must be properly maintained. Your parents sternly told you to use coasters for a good reason: Water and wood really are natural enemies.

Water spots appear as white or light-colored rings or clouds. The light color is an indication that the wood has not reached humidity; rather, it’s stuck inwood finish. (It’s when the stain is black or dark that there really is a problem and you need to repaint it yourself or see a professional.)

YesThe damage is doneand now you need to figure out how to get rid of water stains on wood, don’t be discouraged. Many have been there before you and have managed to eliminate — or at least significantly less noticeably — the unsightly marks that moisture can leave after it appears. Here are details on three approaches that we and others have found most effective. You may have to try and try a bit before you find the trick that works for you. Be patient, and good luck!

Remove water stains with wood with clothes iron

Method 1: Water from the iron stains wooden table tops yellow.

Like most stains, it acts quickly. If the water spot has only been around for a few days, use heat in this method to evaporate all the moisture.

  1. Empty the water inside the iron, then take it to the room where the furniture in question is located.
  2. Plug in the iron, then lay a cotton towel, towel, or T-shirt over the stain.
  3. Set the iron to the lowest setting, briefly press the iron against the fabric before lifting the fabric to see if the ring of water reduces.
  4. Repeat until (hopefully) the white water stain is gone.

Alternatively, you can try using a hair dryer to achieve the same effect. Move the dryer back and forth over the area for about 10 minutes until the moisture evaporates.

Remove water stain from wood with mayonnaise

Method 2: Use mayonnaise to remove water stains from wood.

Assuming Method 1 doesn’t work, you should experiment with what might look odd at first when placed on a piece of furniture: mayonnaise. The oil from the mayonnaise will seep into the crust, displacing the moisture.

  1. Dab some mayonnaise on a cloth, then gently apply it directly to the affected skin. (Start with the least visible damage as a test before treating the entire countertop this way.)
  2. Let the mayonnaise sit in the water for at least a few hours or overnight, and can be reapplied if the initial layer dries. If there is no mayonnaise in your refrigerator,
  3. Oil
  4. can be used as an alternative problem solver.
  5. Clean with a clean cloth.

If you are seeing results but want the remedy to be a little more breakthrough, consider adding a little tobacco orfireplace asheswith mayonnaise. Oil penetration works best when combined with the abrasive ability of ash.

Note: If the water stain has remained on the surface of the wood for several weeks or months, there may be no more moisture left to remove. Proceed to the next method for another potential DIY solution.

Remove water stain from wood with toothpaste

Method 3: Use white toothpaste to remove water stains.

If the above methods don’t work for you, enter the bathroom, reach the medicine cabinet, and pull out a tube of toothpaste, but not just any. You will need the white non-gel type.

  1. Squeeze white toothpaste onto a cloth.
  2. Rub the toothpaste into the water stain, starting with the most visible spot.
  3. Rub gently for less than a minute. You don’t need to scrub hard or long to see results.

To avoid further damage to the piece of furniture in question, it is best to focus only on the affected areas as toothpaste can wear down the finish.

Although water stains on wooden surfaces may not completely disappear, these methods can at least make them less noticeable. Your advantage is that, if all else fails, you can always sand the furniture down to bare wood andperfect. (If you’re dealing with a highly rated product, you may want to consult a professional.) Next, prep the edges to prevent similar damage in the future. .

Here’s how to remove a heat stain or water mark from a wood table // In this video, I try two different techniques to get rid of a nasty water stain that was left on my wood kitchen table after a party. After a bunch of research, I came across 2 techniques that others have said to work. The first is called the toothpaste technique where you cover the stain with white, paste toothpaste for 30 seconds, then wipe it off with a damp towel. The second is the iron technique where you place a 100% cotton cloth (or t-shirt) over the water mark and hold an iron on top of it for a few seconds at a time. ***Make sure your iron is on the cotton setting and NO STEAM!!!!*** One of the techniques worked like a charm…can you guess which one?
