Multi-read content what grit sandpaper for painting walls

Take this quick test:

Walk your hand along the wall closest to you and look at that wall. Can you see the little pimples, pimples or hairs? If possible, bet that the wall was not sanded before painting.

The question we often hear from our customers is, how do professionals like New Approach Painting achieve incredibly smooth and even wall surfaces?

We have the answer.

How to get a smooth, even surface on your wall

Although it may seem like a daunting task, sanding a wall is actually a quick and easy process – at a good, slow, steady pace, it will only take you about 15 minutes to sand a room wall before painting.

Here are our tips for giving your walls a professional smoothness:

1. Choose the right tools.

  • Painter pole (or threaded broom handle).
  • Tip: Solid wood withstands pressure better than hollow metal posts.
  • A post-mounted half-plate sanding pad ($20 or less at your local paint store) and the best quality sandpaper available, correct grit (220 is good for most jobs).

2. Let the tools do the work for you.

  • Standing behind the wall at a comfortable distance and with light pressure, move the sander back and forth across the wall in wide arcs, starting at one corner of the pad then the other.

Tip: Apply enough pressure so that the entire surface of the sanding pad stays in contact with the wall, but not so much that the pad wobbles or flips over (may mark or scratch the wall, additional preparation is required. Self-adhesive). You will hear a smooth, even “ssssshhhh” sound as the paper glides over flat parts of the wall and blurs surface imperfections.

3. Clean up after yourself.

  • Wet a painter’s rag or other cloth and wring it out thoroughly. Then attach it to your sanding pad (if your technique is good, you may not have to tighten it) and repeat your wide arcs to wipe away dust and sanding residue. If you skip this step, the sanding dust on the wall can cause your topcoat to bubble or dry unevenly! Then use your hand to pick up and suck up the dust that has fallen on the wall and settled on top of the baseboards.

Tip: This is an optional step you can take to achieve a perfect finish. After the first coat of paint is applied and dry, sand the walls again carefully and lightly with 400 grit sandpaper just to scrape the surface and remove any missed imperfections. Then clean up any debris if necessary and apply another coat of paint.

Congratulation ! Now that your walls are sanded and smoothed with the new approach, you’re on your way to achieving that professional looking paint job!

Popular questions about what grit sandpaper for painting walls

what grit sandpaper for painting walls?

For previously painted water-based paint, sand with a fine-grit sandpaper. For oil-based paint, a medium-grit sandpaper (100- to 150-grit) should be used. Again, wipe away any debris and allow to dry completely. Cracking or flaking paint on previously painted surfaces can also be an issue.

What grit sandpaper should I use before painting?

100 – 150 Grit: Medium. 100 – 150 gives the paint and/or stain enough to grip onto, without making the piece too smooth or too rough. When I am painting or staining a piece, I make sure not to go over 150 grit.

What is the best sandpaper for walls?

On drywalls, 120- or 150-grit sandpaper is probably your best bet, and sand using only light-to-moderate pressure. A very important tip is to close the door of the room where you’re working, so the dust and debris from the drywall doesn’t settle throughout the rest of the house.

How do you sandpaper walls before painting?

How much should I sand before painting?

How To Sand Surfaces For Painting
Use Coarseness
For bare wood 80-120
Plastic, ceramics, melamine, Formica, metal and stone 100-150
Between coats of paint 120-220
Before applying stain inside (water-based) 180-220

What is the difference between 80 grit 120 grit and 240 grit sandpaper?

For heavy sanding and stripping, you need coarse sandpaper measuring 40- to 60-grit; for smoothing surfaces and removing small imperfections, choose 80- to 120-grit sandpaper. For finishing surfaces smoothly, use a super fine sandpaper with 360- to 600-grit.

How do I prep a wall for painting?

Do professional painters wash walls before painting?

Do professional painters wash walls? Yes! For exterior painting, we usually power-wash the surface, or sometimes hand-scrub, to make sure it is free of surface contaminants. Inside, pressure washing is not an option, but in many cases the walls need to be washed prior to paint application.

What sandpaper should I use on plaster?

Attach a 60-grit sandpaper to a sanding block to sand rough or textured plaster surfaces. Sand the wall lightly with the sanding block.

Should walls be sanded before painting?

While sanding is not required for every paint project, rough spots on walls, whether they have been previously painted or not, need to be sanded before they are painted to ensure the paint goes on smoothly.

What happens if you don’t sand before painting?

If you don’t sand before painting you will likely end up with an uneven finish and a paint job that will likely end up peeling after a few months. You may also be able to see any lighter or darker patches of the book come through the paint which looks ugly and unprofessional.

Should I sand after priming walls?

After the primer dries, lightly sand away bumps and ridges using very fine grit sandpaper folded into quarters. When the grit of one section of sandpaper becomes covered with dust, switch to an unused section and continue. Wipe the wall clean with a damp towel or sponge and allow it to dry before painting.

Can I just paint over old paint?

How Do I Paint Over Painted Walls? If the wall is in good condition and the paints are chemically the same (both latex, for instance), you have a few options when the new paint is the opposite shade of the old paint. You can use a primer to thoroughly cover the old color, then apply 1 or 2 coats of the new paint.

What kind of sand do you put in paint?

What kind of sand do you put in paint? Coarse rather than fine sand will provide better traction when mixed with paint. Avoid using sand from the beach, which is likely to have impurities and yield poor results. Play sand—the type used for crafts and kids’ sandboxes—is suitable for mixing with paint.

What to do if you forgot to sand before painting?

Sand until everything is nice and smooth, checking for ridges or uneven parts. Wipe down the area well with a damp sponge, dry with a cloth and allow the area to dry. Then, you can prime and paint the patched areas. Be sure that the paint matches perfectly; otherwise, the repairs will look obvious.
