Why should I care how I hang my curtains? ! Measurements are everything Measure the length of your curtain How to hang rods and blinds

Why should I care how I hang my curtains? !

Because you can make your room look better than x100!

Time and time again I find that the curtain rods are hung so low that the already small space seems even smaller.

But did you know that you cansignificantlyImprove the overall look of a room by simply moving your curtain rods a few inches?

By hanging your curtains a little more carefully, you can:

  • make your ceiling appear higher
  • enlarge your windows
  • let more light into your room
  • Add more impact to your room
  • make your space more refined

We’ll go over everything to take you from a beginner to a true pro!

Measurement is everything

how to measure and hang curtains

Before you even consider buying new curtains, you have a few things to do!

So go get your gauge because you can’t skip this step!

You will measure BEFORE you buy your curtains for three super important reasons:

  1. You must know how
  2. a wide stick
  3. you need
  4. You must know how
  5. widen each curtain
  6. the control panel must be
  7. You must know how
  8. Long
  9. your curtains
  10. must be

What exactly do you need to measure?

There are 4 measures that we must keep in mind. Let’s see!

MEASUREMENTS

correct curtain rod length infographic

  • As a general rule, the curtain rod itself should be 8 to 12 inches longer than the width of the window.
  • You want an extra bar that extends 4 inches to 6 inches on both sides of the window.
  • Make sure you have enough “side bars” so that when the blinds are fully open, you only cover the edges of the actual window.
  • It’s important to make sure you can see as many full windows as possible. This way you only prevent the bare minimum of valuable light from entering your room. It also gives the illusion of bigger windows and doesn’t block your view.

MEASUREMENTS

correct curtain rod height infographic

  • General rules
  •
  • is to mount the rod anywhere between half to two-thirds between the top of the window frame and the ceiling or ceiling molding.
  • You can even get close to your mold for maximum impact – 3/4″ from the bottom of the mold tends to be fine. However, if there is a LOT of space between the top of your window and your mold, getting too close to the mold may seem odd. Use at your own discretion!
  • This will help create the illusion of a taller window, taller ceilings, and allow the fabric to hang gracefully. We want all of this.

MEASUREMENTS

correct curtain curtain width infographic

  • General rules
  • curtains should be about 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window you intend to cover.
  • This will ensure that you maintain a ‘focused’ look even when the blinds are closed.

MEASUREMENTS

correct curtain curtain length infographic

  • Don’t forget to account for the extra inches for
  • curtain borders and headers. For example, curtains with a rod pocket will be shorter than curtains with a hood or tab.
  • Grow at least 5 inches to 10 inches to be safe! F
  • or for more information on different curtain lengths, keep reading!

Choose the length of your curtain

Now that you have all of these measurements in place, you can buy your curtains with confidence!

If you’re having trouble measuring for step 4 above, you may not be sure exactly WHAT length your blinds will last.

Deep breath! It’ll be OK.

Here are the most common ways interior designers hang curtains and drapes.

Puddles: This is the most dramatic of all curtains (and the most tedious to clean). To achieve a puddle effect, add 2 inches to 4 inches of your siding by 2 inches to 4 inches. For more dramatic scenarios, check out this guide.

puddle curtain length example

Shatter Break: The idea is that you add 1/2″ to 1″ to the length of the curtain so the sheet will “break” when it hits the floor. That way the dash doesn’t hang straight and adds a bit of fun.
Floor kissing: this is the most difficult method to set up but which seems to be the most suitable and the most personalized. You need to be extremely precise in your measurements to get it right. If your curtains hug the floor, they float perfectly above the floor surface. To do this, you need to measure the exact distance from the top of the curtain to the floor. The trick is to hang the curtains on the rod and mark or pin them when they are already hanging.
Floating: If you can’t accept the idea of your curtains touching the floor, choose to hang them just half an inch above the floor. This gives an extremely clean look, although slightly less formal. Your curtains will be completely straight with this method. Try not to go 1/2 above the floor or your measurements will start to look like errors.

curtains floating example

So with all of this, you need to consider not only what you like, but also the function and style of your room.

Is it casual or formal? Romantic or casual? Ultra modern or bohemian classic?

Bedrooms are often less formal than dining rooms, so you’ll probably want to avoid curtains that are too long. Unless you want a romantic-looking bedroom: in this case, creating a puddle would be quite appropriate! Rolling around can also look great in daycare.

Dining rooms tend to be formal, so puddles would be a great choice.

The living room falls somewhere between formal and casual, so floor kisses can work well.

Of course, it depends on you and your personal preferences!

When you buy your curtains, I recommend that you buy longer ones. Extra inches is always good to have. Standard lengths of ready-made curtains are usually 63″ and 84″ and just TOO SHORT! Your best bet is to look for pre-made panels in 95″, 108″, or 120 if you have extremely high ceilings (these are also standard curtain lengths).

How to hang rods and curtains

are you still with me? Awesome!

You now have your measurements, rungs, brackets and curtains! It’s time to hang on!

The tools and supplies you will need

  • A curtain rod with bracket
  • to screw
  • Wall anchor (optional)
  • cord
  • Level
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Pencil
  • Your curtains

How to hang curtains correctly

Step 1. Take all of your window measurements (scroll up if you missed this part!)

Step 2. Using a drill or screwdriver, hang the first bracket with the screws. Use anchors if your rods and blinds are heavy.

Step 3. Add the bar and position the second bracket – before screwing in, use a flat surface on the bar to ensure it is straight. You may need a third center support if your bar is longer than 4 feet.

Step 4. Add the curtains to the bar and center the bar.

Step 5. Tighten the set screws on the bracket to keep the bar from moving left and right.

Here is the full video if you want to watch it!

Use a pattern to position your supports

There are many ways to create draperies – just do a quick Google search and you’ll find plenty of them.

With multiple windows to manage, using a template saves a lot of time; you only need to measure once, then the template will guide you through the rest.

Personally, I think it’s only a good idea to spend some time prototyping if you have a lot of curtains to hang that all need the exact same measurements.

5 common mistakes about awnings

If you hung up your blinds before finding this item and are wondering why your blinds are in poor condition, here are some possible reasons:

  1. Suspension bar too low. Your eyes will naturally rest on the tallest item in the room (usually the curtain rod) and ignore the rest. If your spacers are too low, you are effectively reducing the overall ceiling height. Raise the bar! It will lift your eyes and it will lift your ceiling.
  2. Too many puddles. If you run into a puddle with your curtain or if your dog or cat has found a place to sleep, it could be a sign that you’ve gone too far.
  3. Bought curtains that were too short (girl, did you skip the measuring part?! 😂). It’s a sign that you didn’t measure it correctly before buying the curtain.
  4. Don’t buy a wide enough bar. You’re actually making your pretty window look smaller by not having a wide enough bar.
  5. The curtain is not wide enough. The narrow curtains look like two sad strips of toilet paper drying out. Big advantage. Make sure you have the right curtain width! The pictures should at least be put together even with the curtains closed.

More advice on curtains

Wash and dry before hanging (shrink first!):

You will definitely want to wash and dry your blinds before hanging them. This is the case with any shrinkage.

If you don’t use the dryer often, you can skip the dryer step.

It would be horrible to spend all that time hanging your curtains and rods exactly the millimeter you want them to be, only to find they’ve shrunk an inch after washing!

Uncut Hem:

If you need curtain trim,I strongly advise you not to cut them!Fold and sew! If you hang up the panels and realize they’re too short, it’s much easier to get a seam cutter and start over than having to buy a new set of blinds. It’s also easier to reuse curtains in a new home if you move.

Weigh and erect your curtain:

Don’t like the way your curtains hang? You can addcurtain weightor hemming pieces to add weight and size to the panels.

If you hang your curtains outside, you will definitely want to do so, to prevent your curtains from blowing away in any way!

You can sew a light cord of beads to the edge of the curtains so that they do not splash. The leash should be flexible enough to reattach and pull the blinds if you need to.

Without weights, another way to hang your curtains properly istrain your curtain. It just involves gathering them into pleats, tying them up and leaving them for a few weeks. You can also speed up the steaming process instead.

Fix saggy bars:

If you’re having the dreaded curtain rod sag error, there’s a simple fix!

Cut a piece of plastic from the top of a yogurt pot or other similar plastic. Then slide it into the space between the two bars. Make sure it’s at the top of the bar.

how to fix a sagging curtain rodsource: nursery

This tip will fix any bar sag and also help with OCD 😂

Rod seems twisted:

Sometimes, if you hang your rod very close to the ceiling, it can still twist even though you used a level. If you hang your rod very close to the ceiling,Skip a leveland use the ceiling as a rule. This way, even if your ceiling is slightly curved (which often happens in older homes), your bar will still appear straight.

Frequently asked questions about awnings

Question: How to hang the curtain without drilling?

TO RESPOND: Command hook! It might not be the most elegant solution, but it can work if you really want to hang curtains but can’t punch holes in the wall.

Be sure to check the weight of the slats and curtains and buy the largestthe hooks can support heavier loads. No one wants their curtain to fall on them.

You can also usetension rope. They are just slats that extend from the inside of one window frame to the other. Obviously, you can just cover your actual window panes this way, but if you crave privacy and can’t break through, tension rods are a great quick fix.

Question: How can I hem the curtain without sewing?

TO RESPOND:You can cut them while they are hanging directly on the bar!

Fold and pin to desired length. Then bring your iron through the window and iron the hem. detach, useiron edging tape. Accomplished.

Thisgreat blog postshow you exactly how.

Question: How do I hang the curtains if I have a basic heater?

TO RESPOND:A common question is how far to hang your curtains from the baseboard heater. There are several types of home heating systems, but you really only need to pay attention to one of them:Thermal.

Electric panels: Warning: if you have an electric heater, be VERY CAREFUL, because your curtain could catch fire!! It happened to everyone, some fires were even fatal. If you hang your blinds near an electric fireplace, be sure to follow these safety precautions: Make sure there is at least 4 inches of clearance between the panels and the top of the fireplace. Some sources even say you need up to 10 inches or 12 inches of ground clearance. If your panels go from the ceiling to the floor, make sure you have at least 2 inches or 3 inches between the back of the curtain and the front of the heater. You may need to move the beams away from the wall than usual to be safe. You should also leave a 1″ gap between the bottom of the curtain and the floor. This ensures adequate air circulation and prevents the panel from becoming too hot. If you are in any doubt, seek advice from your local home safety inspector. It is worth reassuring. If you decide to ditch blinds because of electric heating, a great alternative is to use fabric or weave in Roman colors.

Hot water base or hot water radiator:If you have a hot water base or pad, you can hang the curtains as normal. There’s no way hot water can generate enough heat to burn your curtains.

Heating vents:If you have vents in the floor or in the wall to let the air out, there should be no fire hazard. However, the airflow can cause your curtains to pop, which is annoying. If you have this problem, you can useMagnetic Vent Cap.

Obviously, the magnetic ventilation hood also saves energy, so that’s a plus. Certain types of vent covers can also be painted to match the color of the walls in your room.

Question: How to hang the curtain on the ceiling?

Whether you are creating a room divider with curtains to reduce space in your home or simply want to hang your curtains as high as possible, it is very common to hang curtains directly from the ceiling.

You can do any of the following:

  • simply mount your bar mount to the ceiling instead of the wall (this will work in most cases)
  • use a
  • track curtain
  • try this versatile
  • curtain rope
  • IKEA system

Drapes are important elements of your home décor. A perfectly hung drape creates an attractive aura in the room. This video demonstrates how to hang a drape perfectly. There are a few hardware items needed to mount the drape, which include a drape rod, measuring tape, pencil, a handheld drill, draping rings, a screw driver, and other mounting hardware.

To mount the drape rod, it is important to first measure the width of the window. Always allow 2-3 inches of space on each side of the window for the drapes to open fully. Drape rods are usually placed four inches above the window, but if you want to add height to the room, you can place the rod close to the ceiling.

Once you decide where to mount the window hardware, it is important to check the levels correctly, using the carpenters’ level. Next, hold the mounting brackets to the wall and mark the location of the screw holes with a pencil before drilling them. Fix the brackets using a screw driver and mount the drape rod for a perfect look.
