Multi-read content where to place citronella candles

Non-stop mosquito. They clump, buzz and bite, leaving you covered in red, itchy welts. Some diseases are contagious, such as Zika and West Nile viruses. There are countless mosquito repellents on the market that promise to ward off small pests, but much of what is claimed to be effective does nothing to stop mosquito bites.

Whether you’re hosting a Labor Day backyard gathering or spending the last weeks of summer lounging in the park, don’t let mosquitoes spoil the fun. Here’s what’s not working – and what is.

Why citronella and other ostentatious mosquito repellents don’t work

A Cutter Citro-Guard candle, shown in a metal container with a mosquito repelling bracelet in the foreground.

Lemongrass, an essential oil distilled from a type of lemongrass, has long been considered a “natural” mosquito repellent. Citronella essential oil is used in a variety of forms — from table candles to essential oil diffusers to 5-foot tiki torches — to deter pests.

But the truth is there’s no sign of itcitronella candleoffers more protection than any other smoke generated by a candle. This is due to the factEssential oils do not provide a significant invisible shieldsuch as EPA-approved repellents such as DEET and picaridin.

A mosquito interprets the world through many chemical receptors, according toLaurence Zwiebel, professor of biological sciences and pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. Essential oils only block a limited number of these receptors, and Zwiebel told lead writer Doug Mahoney that he’s not sure if an essential oil that works for one species will work on many others. As Doug wrote in an article onessential oils as insect repellent”On the other hand, repellents like picaridin and DEET block more receptors more consistently.”

Although citronella is the most popular of these so-called mosquito repellents, it’s not the only one that doesn’t work. Here are some details:

Error zapper.Although bug zappers are good at killing bugs, unfortunately they target the wrong kind. Mosquitoes aren’t necessarily attracted to light sources like other insects, so zappers primarily kill insects that maintain your local ecosystem. Inposted on error zappersDoug writes, “Due to their irresistibly attractive light, insect killers are extremely effective at killing insects. The only problem: they don’t kill the bugs that bother you. A University of Delaware study tracked six beetles in a residential area over a 10-week period and found that of the 13,789 insects killed, only 31 were flies (including mosquitoes). It’s 0.22% unfortunately.

Mosquito trap. Our experts found that the mosquito trap did not match their marketing claims. InWirecutter Mosquito Control GuideJoe Conlon, then a technical adviser to the American Mosquito Control Association, told Doug that propane and UV-based traps can catch mosquitoes, but those traps are unappealing to the human-harming pest.

Waterproof bracelet. While it is true that some of these bracelets are made with active ingredients that can be harmful to mosquitoes, these repellents are not concentrated enough to be effective on a large scale. Mosquitoes will likely avoid the bracelet, but they can also land and bite you elsewhere.

Sound-based products. At least 10 studies over the past 15 years have denounced ultrasound machines as “worthless,” Conlon tells Doug in his guide to ultrasound.best mosquito control device.

Methods to repel mosquitoes are really effective

The best spatial repellent for mosquitoes, Thermacell E55 Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller

Photo: Sarah Kobos

Unfortunately, there’s no one solution to mosquito control that works 100% of the time, Doug writes in Wirecutter’s guide tobest mosquito control device. “Mosquitoes are notoriously resilient, and with nearly 175 species recognized in the United States alone, there’s a lot people don’t know about their behavior.”

However, our experts were able to find mosquito repellents that actually work in most situations. theThermacell E55, Arechargeable space mosquito repellent, covering an entire area, instead of just one person. As Doug explains in the manual, the device uses heat to “evaporate a small amount of liquid repellent, which slowly disperses away from the device, protecting an area from mosquitoes and other biting insects. E55 is not only as effective at repelling pests as a full application ofinsect repellent spray, it is also quiet and odorless.

If you need something more durable that can last a walk in the woods,Thermacell MR450 Armored Mobile Mosquito Repelleris a good choice. The MR450 is more portable than the E55, making it better for camping or sporting events. But its butane canister is less convenient than our top pick of rechargeable batteries. And one of the downsides of Thermacell products is that they lose their effectiveness in cool conditions.

Surprisingly, asingle fanis another good way to deter mosquitoes. Pests are known to be weak, so air circulation can keep bugs from getting to you.Assistant Editor Annemarie ContepreferGeek Aire Rechargeable Fandue to its portability. Since mosquitoes tend to fly low, Doug recommends keeping a fan above your knees to keep them away.
