Multi-read content what is a drill used for

Knowing the different types of drill bits helps you choose the right tool for the job

In its simplest form, drillis a tool that uses a rotary or punching motion to make a hole. This is a broad definition that includes everything from dental drills to tunnel drills. We will focus on the types of drill bits that we often use in construction and around the house.

However, before going into too much detail, let’s jump right into some technical definitions. The drill makes holes with a drill bit. The driver tightens screws, bolts and other fasteners using a driver bit. Most people think of both types of applications when considering a drill. So, for our purposes, we will group them together.

Drill Driver – One of the most popular types of drills

Both wire andcordless drillsthere is a bit of the bendable chuck. Regardless of voltage, battery size or brand, these tools only need to be twisted slightly clockwise and counterclockwise. Some cordless drills and screwdrivers are also availableclutch drillwhich allows you to mechanically adjust the amount of electricity it transmits when you screw in the screws.

Skil 20V Brushless Drill Review - PWRCore 20 Compact DL529302

When to use a cordless drill

Use a drill to drill basic holes in plastic, wood, and metal. The size of the hole you are drilling determines the power drill you need. The manual has specs that tell you what sizes it can handle. You can also glean information about the size of the chuck. The 3/8 inch chuck does not support larger 1/2 inch bits.

Cordless drills also work great for driving screws into plastic, wood, metal, concrete and just about anything else, although some may require you to drill a pilot hole first .

Hammer drill

Ahammer drill, or hammer drill, has the same basic design as a drill. It simply adds a hammer mechanism that vibrates back and forth to shred the concrete. This happens while the motor is rotating the bit. Most hammer drills allow you to choose hammer drill mode, drill only mode, or clutch control. In other words, you can disable the hammer mechanism and use it like any other drill/driver.

When to use a hammer drill?

The hammer drill is the all-purpose tool in the drill world. Use it for drilling and driving in plastic, wood, metal and concrete/construction. Just keep in mind that most hammer drills are rated for 1/4″ maximum for drilling concrete. You may also want a vacuum cleaner and shroud to prevent inhalationsilica dustand avoidsilicosis.

Rotary hammer (combination hammer)

Arotating hammer, or combohammer, is the big brother of the hammer drill. These types of concrete drills range in size from slightly larger to much larger than hammer drills. These use a more powerful hammer/knife mechanism to deliver significantly more power than hammer drills.

These tools typically come with at least two modes: chisel and rotary hammer. Some give you the option to just rotate, but some premium professionals use it, even though it is capable of drilling through wood and metal.

Bosch Bulldog Rotary Hammer GBH18V-26DN

The chipping works exactly as it sounds – it uses a bit of chipping to pound like a mini jackhammer to demolish. The rotary hammer is the mode you use to drill holes in concrete, asphalt, brick, stone or any other masonry.

When to use a hammer drill?

Use a rotary hammer to drill holes or chisel in concrete, asphalt, stone, brick or masonry. The largest of these mounts drills holes up to 2 inches.

Impact Factors (listen up!)

Although not really a drill, the impact driver that makes up our list is largely down to the number of hex attachments available. Calledmotor impact, the hex chuck of these tools supports excavator compatible bits, twist bits, etc. Instead of using a forward shearing mechanism, the impact driver uses a rotating shafthammer and anvil mechanism. As the chuck rotates, the hammer hits the anvil hard, giving it a much greater turning force than a standard drill bit.

As mentioned above, many drills now come with a 1/4″ hex shank “ready to hit”. This allows you to drill holes in metal, plastic or wood with your screwdriver. It’s not as smooth as a drill, but it certainly gets the job done.

Bosch GDR18V-1800CN Brushless Impact Driver

When to use an impact driver

impact driverare champions in the construction world, handling screws faster than a standard drill/driver. Although you can use it to drill holes with the right bit, many professionals use it with a drill so they don’t have to switch drills while working. When deciding between adrill vs impact driver-use both. It can really save you time.

core drilling machine

Acore drillis one of the rarest types of drill bits. It is basically a large motor, sometimes attached to a frame to keep it stable while drilling. It spins a drill bit, a cylindrical bit that creates a core to be removed instead of grinding the entire hole. All it does is spin a little. No hammering, chipping or driving applications.

When to use a core drill

Nothing does the job of a core drill. Switch to a core drill when you need to make large holes in concrete, even up to several feet in diameter! These specialized tools move slowly, but sometimes the job just takes time.

Earth Auger (Earth Auger)

The floor drill, or floor drill, uses alternating current or gas to spin its powerful motor. Drills use a large, powerful bit that can penetrate the ground and remove dirt faster and easier than an auger or shovel. More recently we see cordless drills likeMakita ground drillandRyobi 40V Brushless Drill.hit the stage. These bring cordless convenience and battery power to a previously gas-limited tool.

Stihl BT 131 Earth Auger Review

When to use the earth auger

Land drills act as large mobile machines on the ground. These types of drill bits make your life easier when you need to drill a hole in the ground (or even ice). Use it to place sticks and to drill holes for ice fishing.

Be aware that although dirt and ice exercises look and work similarly, you will still see some differences. For example, a hammer drill typically spins at a higher rpm. These tools aren’t as heavy as earth drills, and the sharp blades don’t tend to bind together, so they rarely have clutches. Finally, the ice drill’s less stiff tip and sharper blades make it more suitable for digging through ice rather than navigating rocks and soil.

Cordless screwdriver

Although not technically a drill, an electric screwdriver works like a drill. These usually have an inline design instead of a pistol grip and are less powerful than a standard drill/driver. They rotate the chuck either clockwise or counter-clockwise and are primarily useful for driving small screws. Although they are capable of drilling small holes, they are not the best tools for the job.

When to use a cordless screwdriver

Motorized screwdrivers are best suited for small and/or delicate screws that don’t require the torque of a standard drill/driver. They are great for working in electrical boxes, installing switch panels, and anywhere you can use a hand screwdriver.

Drywall Screwdriver (Drywall Screwdriver)

Screwdriver for drywallthey are also not technically maneuvers and are purely a steering/tethering tool. They usually spin at a higher rpm to set the screw quickly. Although they share the basic design of pistol grip drills, they sometimes have a handle directly behind the motor and lock to get you through the job faster. Professional models often have assembled magazines that allow you to automatically feed screws as you move. This greatly speeds up the work.

When to use a drywall screwdriver

The name says it all, drywall screwdrivers help you install drywall panels quickly. Models that can handle longer screws also make building the deck easier.

wrap it up

Did we miss any other kind of repeat there? No matter what job or project you’ve organized, they all date back to when humans first learned to swing a sharp stone back and forth to punch a hole in another object. When you look back even 100 years, it’s amazing how far exercises have come!

There are two common types of drill bits. Bit for drilling holes and driver bits for driving fasteners. A normal drill kit will come with a variety of sizes.

Here’s a tip: push the bit in all the way, then back it out bout an 1/8th of an inch, that gives the chuck a better grip on the bit and allows it to tighten on the bit better.

Proper drilling protocol: Whether you’re drilling or driving, the same basic form applies. Put on your safety gear, then hold the drill perpendicular to the surface, that keeps the bit from wandering or breaking. Tip: if you’re a beginner, hold a square next to the drill so you see \u0026 feel the correct alignment.
