Multi-read content what does dual mount sink mean

Today’s sinks come in so many different sizes, colors, materials, configurations, and installations that it can be a little overwhelming to choose the best one for your kitchen design. Consider all of these considerations when starting with choosing your countertop installation method.

In this post

  • Dual mount sink installation option
  • Installing an undermount or drop-in sink
  • Stainless steel double sink

Dual mount sink installation option

Table Top Materials and Installation

When installing the kitchen sink, you must first cut out or allow for an opening in the countertop. The countertop material determines how this opening is created.

Sure, marble, granite, concrete and brick countertopswill not be cut. Instead, they will be measured to allow for opening. Inwood or wood table toplike a butcher block, however, the opening is actually cut.

One method of installing a sink would be to simply “drop” it into this opening. Clearance will be measured for fit and the sink will fit snugly.

Another method is to “hang” the sink from below the opening. The same care to measure correctly will also be taken for this option, to ensure a good fit.

Definition of double well

Now you can understand why they are called “dual mount sinks”: drop in or hang from below, two installation methods. In the world of plumbing construction and repair, they are called:

  • Undermount sink installation; and,
  • Recessed
  • , kind of aggressive from below.

There are benefits and styles that inform every decision must consider concerns such as proper sealing and potential damage to your chosen countertop material.

Installing an undermount or drop-in sink

First, consider the flexibility of the installation. Since you don’t have to decide how to install it yet, you can order the double sink before choosing your countertop and cabinet. This way, you’ll have a head start on on-time deliveries while also considering the rest of your kitchen design.

Install a sink

Top Mount Sink Installation

Dual mount sinks will have very flat sink edges. If you choose laminate, tile, or wood countertops, the recessed style can be a good choice because of that flat countersunk edge. It’s easy to seal edges with this low profile, and it’s also easy to wipe down the counter right in the sink, where it canprovided for garbage disposal.

  • Opting for a top mount or undermount sink makes installation easier and if you’re the do-it-yourselfer type, this is an important consideration. However, if you hire for this task, it is a quick and easy installation for the professional and therefore quite inexpensive.
  • This would be a good choice for countertop materials that are more porous than other materials, such as wood (e.g. meat blocks) or the 2×6 and sealed color countertops that have become popular these days. . Sealing these edges is an easy and very effective job.
  • However, installing the sink too high is also a good choice for
  • countertops like granite
  • , marble and tiles. This flat rim protects the edges of these countertop materials and prevents chipping.

Undermount Sink Installation

Installing a bottom hung sink requires a little more work, but can be an attractive display and look great in your kitchen. There are three methods or “looks” to choose from, and all involve the amount of sink you wish to reveal.

  • The exposed part will reveal a small sunken ledge. Your countertop stops a little before the sink drops, revealing part of the circumference of the rim.
  • The exposed part will completely hide the rim and the countertop will hang slightly above the sink. The rim is not exposed at all.
  • The Flush interface keeps the countertop and sink edges aligned. In other words, the tabletop extends to the end of the ledge rather than over its edge.

Installing a freestanding sink creates clean lines in the kitchen and provides a few extra inches of usable counter space. Knocking debris or twigs into the sink to remove them is even easier with the undermount style.

Important Concerns About Installing an Undermount Sink

However, installing Undermount will cost you a few dollars and professional installation is recommended. It’s important to seal the sink under the countertop, because you don’t want water seeping into the space between the sink and the cooker.

Water seeping through a bad mattress can damage the countertop material (wood, laminate) and create an opportunity for mold or bacteria to grow. Nobody wants to be anywhere in your house, leave your kitchen alone.

There is also a risk of chipping the edge of the counter. You’re going to spend a lot of money on a granite, marble, or tile countertop and you don’t want it marred by a chip on the edge at the sink connection point. Although a non-permanent sink installation is best used with this countertop material, the risk of chipping must be considered.

Stainless steel double sink

Stainless Steel Dual Mount Sinks

Stainless steel is a common and popular material for kitchen sinks. Stainless steel sinks can cost between $100 and $4,000, depending on size, basin configuration, etc. As mentioned before, the rim will be super flat and will serve well even when overfitted or dropped.

Stainless steel double sink, double sink can make a very impactful statement in your kitchen. With the sink handle installed on the cutout side, sliding into the sink is easy and clean no matter which installation method you choose. Two bathtubs make a good impression in both form and function.

They are available at all the usual major DIY stores and, of course, you can find one that fits your pocket and your kitchen at any plumbing supply store. They are easier for DIYers to use because they are much lighter than other kitchen sink materials such as:

  • iron and steel
  • China
  • The copper
  • Stone, such as granite or travertine

It only takes a pair of hands to install it easily. And, stainless steel is a durable material, and this installation can last a long time.

Additional Considerations for Stainless Steel Sinks

Two final words on stainless steel double sinks for your consideration:

  • Noise.
  • Stainless steel sinks can make noise when you turn on the water or put dishes, pots and pans in them. So choose one with a built-in muffler that will minimize noise.
  • sink nets
  • . You want to protect the surface of the sink from scratches. Sink mesh is a good investment to keep your stainless steel scratch free.

We have addressed both of these concerns in previous posts.

  • How to insulate under the kitchen sink?
  • How to measure for a sink rack

When it comes to yourssink, there are countless considerations, each important in its own way. Always have an overview of your kitchen design as it relates to your sink and refer to Mr. Kitchen Faucets for helpful tips.

Popular questions about what does dual mount sink mean

what does dual mount sink mean?

A dual mount sink has a flat rim that is usually just the thickness of the material, except for Quartz sinks which will have a thicker rim. They can be installed either above as a drop-in or below as an undermount, making it a versatile choice that can be installed in any countertop.

What is the difference between a dual mount and undermount sink?

Undermount installation is when the top rim around the sink is attached to the underside of the countertop. This means the interior edge of the countertop is exposed all the way around above the sink. Dual mount sinks can be installed undermount when used with solid surface materials such as quartz, granite, or marble.

Which is better under or over mount sink?

While undermount sinks are currently preferred for looks, overmount can be a better investment in longevity for certain countertop materials like wood.

What is the difference between a drop in sink and a top mount sink?

Undermount sinks are bolted to the bottom of a countertop. Drop-in sinks are installed directly through the top of the countertop. Drop-in sinks have a lip framing the sink which, over time, collects dust and residue.

What is sink mounting?

Under-mount or bottom-mount sinks are installed below the countertop surface. The edge of the countertop material is exposed at the hole created for the sink (and so must be a carefully finished edge rather than a rough cut). The sink is then clamped to the bottom of the material from below.

What does dual mount installation mean?

This type of sink is called a dual-mount kitchen sink because it can be mounted as a “drop-in” sink or an “under-mount” sink. So, this will give you a lot of flexibility when the time comes to pick your countertop.

Do undermount sinks fall?

A common issue with the undermount design is that they can be prone to sagging over time. When the sink starts pulling away from the countertop, leaving a gap, it needs to be hiked back up and secured in place. Undermount sinks work best with solid granite, marble, or concrete counters.

Are kitchen double sinks outdated?

The trend is certainly moving away from double bowl sinks. Double sinks were popular before the dishwasher was invented; this allowed people to keep dirty dishes soaking in one bowl, while the other bowl was used for rinsing the clean dishes.

What type of sink is best with butcher block?

Undermount sinks
Undermount sinks are most commonly chosen as the best sink for butcher block countertop because they are stable, easy to install, and fit well into most kitchens.

Are drop-in sinks outdated?

Drop-in sinks represent a sink type that is affordable, flexible, and easy to install. But drop-in sinks do not have much in the way of resale value and are aesthetically outdated.

What do you call a sink that sits on top of the counter?

What is a Vessel Sink? A vessel sink is a sink, most commonly installed in a bathroom, that sits on top of the vanity countertop, unlike most commonly known undermount sinks that are installed under the counter.

What does self rimming mean for a sink?

Self Rimming sinks, using the rimming lip, transfers the weight of the sink and contents to the surrounding counter. This gives these sinks the ability to support elevated levels of weight and rough handling that can occur in commercial applications, saving the owner money in the long term.

What type of sink is best with granite?

Stainless steel sinks
Stainless steel sinks are by far the most used sinks with granite and quartz kitchen countertops. They are a complimentary match to most faucets, they do not rust, chip, or stain, and they are easy to clean and maintain.

What is the best way to mount a kitchen sink?

How do you mount an under mount sink?
