Multi-read content how wide is a sink base cabinet

Looking to update your kitchen cabinets? It’s not enough to choose the colors and styles you like.

Knowing what size options are available and what will work best for your kitchen is an essential aspect of remodeling.

Here’s a simple and comprehensive guide to basic kitchen cabinet sizes so you can find the size that’s right for you.

Kitchen Cabinet Size: 101

Of course, it’s fun to tinker with different ideas for cabinet colors, styles, or materials. However, in the end, if you don’t size the cabinets correctly, they will look cluttered and may not work.

This guide provides a list of standard cabinet sizes. Unless you’re thinking about super custom cabinets, this lists the base sizes you’ll most often choose.

Dimensions of wall cabinets

These are cabinets that are mounted above the counter and do not touch the floor. They are typically used to store kitchen utensils or light foods and attach directly to your kitchen wall via studs.

Built-in cabinets create a focal point for your kitchen as they are at eye level and are used most often. These cabinets tend to be more fun cabinets because you can add lighting, glass, and other features to add personality to your kitchen.

Now let’s get to the dimensions:

  • Height – 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches.
  • The heights of wall cabinets are often limited because they must adapt to the worktop and the ceiling of the kitchen. You’ll find the heights for these listed as 12″, 15″, 18″, 24″, 30″, 36″ and 42″.
  • 12-inch cabinets are the ones you place above the refrigerator.
  • Width – 12-36 inches.
  • Standard widths for single and double door wall cabinets are typically 9″ to 36″ wide, we offer these in 3″ increments (i.e. 9″, 12″, 15″).
  • Depth – 12-24 inches.
  • Standard wall cabinets are typically 24 inches deep.

Tall cabinet size

This is what you find for a pantry or broom closet. They are less common but very useful when installed correctly. You can choose them in sizes long enough to stretch from floor to ceiling.

Here are the basic dimensions of tall cabinets:

  • Height – 84, 90 and 96 inches.
  • When it comes to the heights of these cabinets, you have three options.
  • You can choose floor-to-ceiling cabinets or 84-inch cabinets that have foot space between the cabinets and the ceiling. This is usually where you add ceramic roosters or potted plants.
  • Width – 18, 24 and 30 inches.
  • Here we cover 18, 24 and 30 inches.
  • 24 inches is a moderate size that fits most kitchens.
  • 30 inches is for those who want more drawers or can use the space to store more food.
  • Depth – 24 inches.
  • Only 24 inches for depth. Deep drawers are great for keeping food or gadgets from getting lost in the dark depths of your cupboards. They prevent entry and facilitate access.
  • 24 inch cabinets are ideal for adding drawers or drawers. You can store sliders or larger boxes in these deep drawers.

Base cabinet size

Don’t forget the base unit! These sturdy and essential pieces will sit right on the floor and do the “heavy lifting” when stored.

The base cabinet is usually where you store bulkier kitchen items like the KitchenAid mixer, large pots and pans, and items you’re less likely to take out every day.

Base cabinets have sinks installed inside. Worktops cover them and surround the hob and the dishwasher. They are basically the most expensive type of meter to install as they are the most flexible and need to be the most robust.

Simply put, you can design a kitchen without walls or high cabinets, but you can’t do without low cabinets. But enough about their importance. Let’s go to the dimensions:

  • Height, table top minus – 34.5 inches.
  • Base cabinets cannot vary much in height. Common design practices and building codes prevent deviations in this regard. Facility cabinets must be coded, which means they must be “accessible”.
  • Height including table top – 35-36 inches.
  • This means that after adding the counter, the base cabinet can be 35 to 36 inches high.
  • Many designers and installers cite the old adage that “the counter must adapt to the user”. This sometimes translates to counters at 32 inches or as high as 38 inches.
  • Width – 9-46 inches (3 inch increase).
  • The width of the base cabinet is the size that varies the most. The intended use of the base cabinet influences this decision.
  • Here are some examples of common uses and their equivalent widths: 9, 12, 18 or 24 inches – Suitable for holding baking pans, condiments, scissors or narrow rolling pins. 30 inches – For single sink. 33 inch – Used for offset sinks or double sinks. 36 inches- For double sinks. 42 inches – This is the widest base cabinet width. Think of a lazy Susan size or just something extremely large.
  • Depth, counter minus – 24 inches.
  • The depth of base cabinets is the distance between the outside edge of the cabinet and the wall. This means less space inside than the actual number of inches you choose.
  • If you have a cabinet more than 24 inches deep, it will be difficult to reach rear devices or plugged-in devices.
  • Depth including counter – 25-26 inches.
  • Usually the counter is hung over the front of the base cabinet to hide the edges. Depending on the design of the counter, this overhang can add an inch or two.

Choose your kitchen cabinets

Now that you’re armed with a basic list of standard kitchen cabinet sizes, comes the fun part of choosing styles and colors!
