Multi-read content how to remove salt stains from suede

I’m glad winter is finally over and the weather is getting nice and warm again, but there are still reminders around the house that winter isn’t that far away. There were gloves to wash and put away, a winter coat to go to the laundry, and ugly salt stains on my favorite sneakers and suede boots. In our climate, salt stains are unavoidable because most sidewalks and roads are treated with rock salt, but even after the snow has cleared up, those chalk stains still glare at me.

Luckily, I have an easy and inexpensive way to clean salt stains from my favorite suede sneakers and faux suede boots – they look brand new again!

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakers-and-boots

What do you need:

  • White vinegar
  • diluted water
  • small bowl
  • soft, clean cloth
  • suede brush or clean old toothbrush
  • newspaper
  • Protective spray for suede and leather

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakers

Start by brushing off the dirt with a suede brush or a clean old toothbrush.

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakers

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a small bowl. Dip a towel or cotton ball in the solution and use it to remove salt stains from your shoes/boots. You just need to leave it moist enough to wash out the salt. You don’t need to soak it. Tuck newspaper inside the shoes to help them stay in shape while they dry. Always let suede air dry and never place it near a heater to speed up this process, which can alter the shape of your shoe. Once done, clean the suede brush in the vinegar solution, rinse and let dry.

Let the shoes dry completely, then bring the suede back to sleep by brushing them with a clean suede brush or a clean old toothbrush.

Now I’m doing something a little unusual with my black suede sneakers after I’ve cleaned them and they’re completely dry – I’m putting a permanent black mark on them. I’m sure it’s not something that shoe care professionals would approve of, but I find it really makes them look like new.

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakers

Look at the difference between the left shoe (which was hit and the marker) and then the right shoe which was not hit. Over time, black suede seems to lose its color, which helps restore the skin. Just make sure you’re using a truly permanent black marker (like the Sharpie), as some can have an almost purple tint.

I let the shoes dry completely overnight, then the next day I sprayed them with a suede and leather protectant spray. This helps protect them from the elements and will stay nice and clean longer.

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakersFor the product I use, I spray the entire shoe in a circular motion of about 15-20 cm. You don’t need to wet the surface. I let it dry for about 30 minutes and then I repeat.

My suede shoes still look as good as when I got them. I usually repeat the process every 3-4 months in the winter (or as often as needed), then put them away in the summer. By doing this procedure regularly, these shoes have extended my life by about 4 years, with regular use.

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-boots

After sneakers, I moved on to my favorite faux suede boots from Rocket Dog. These are my walking boots and they are very worn. With the wintry weather, the salt water always seems to splash to make marks on the back.

I can clean it using the same half water, half vinegar cleaning solution applied with a soft cloth.

Don’t forget to wash your heels too!

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-boots

After the first round, I still had a few places left so I used this solution a second time. They seem for the second time out of everything. I stuff them with newspaper and let them air dry overnight.

For these boots, I didn’t use a felt tip as I find they look better raw, but I made sure to spray them with a protective spray.

After seeing how my shoes and boots were, I also offered to clean Garrett’s shoes for him. He didn’t think they were dirty at all, but after warming up once, he was convinced. Just look at the difference!

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-boots

I finished the other boot, stuffed them with newspaper and let them air dry. Multiple coats of spray protect and look great!

cleaning-salt-stains-off-suede-sneakers-and-boots

As with any cleaning method, I recommend testing it out on a small area first to make sure your shoe material will be suitable for this cleaning process. I’ve done this on suede and leather with great results.
