  • Plow the land

Use a garden hoe or rake to dig the soil a few inches deep to break up any solid lumps.

  • Measure the area of the brown spot

Use a tape measure to measure the width and length of the brown spot. Then buy a baking soda from your local garden store to cover the entire area.

  • Choose the right lawn

Be sure to choose the right grass for your lawn, identify the type of grass you grow, and try to match it when buying hay pieces.

  • Cut the grass

Using a sharp shovel or gardening tool, cut a piece of soda slightly larger than the area you are covering.

  • Light fertilizer

Adding a small amount of fertilizer to the soil before sowing will encourage roots to form and stick to the soil.

  • Place the piece of grass firmly

Place the soda on the brown patch that best matches the shape. Compress the scum into the lawn by compacting it with a rake, then immediately stepping on it.

  • Instant watering

Seed grass will need more water than regular seed grass. Keep the area moist by watering two to three times a day as needed. Watch the edges of the new soda – they will dry out first.

  • Maintain weed control

Stop applying any weed control to the new area until you have mowed the lawn at least three times. This will prevent any injury to the turf and allow turf to form.

  • Assuming regular lawn treatment

Once the grass is glued down and actively growing, you can schedule regular lawn treatments. This will usually take place around 14 days after the bottle has been ordered. Be careful, however, not to mow this new lawn that is too short at the start of mowing.

Brown patch will unsurprisingly look like browned patches of turf. These patches resemble irregular circles that can range from a few inches to a few feet in diameter. The grass within the patch can die completely, giving it a sunken look. The grass in the center of the patch can also recover from the disease and grow back, which will give the patch a donut-like appearance. Check the grass blades for brown or grey lesions and curling. If you check early in the morning, you may see white fungal threads throughout afflicted areas.

The brown patch fungus is known to infect all types of cool-season grasses, like fescue, and certain types of warm-season grasses, like St. Augustine grass. Brown patch will thrive in hot, humid weather, and will take advantage of grass weakened by poor aeration, over-watering, poor drainage, and tightly compacted soil.

Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry.

Use a fungicide like Patch Pro as a treatment to stop and control the growth of lawn diseases and fungi. Patch Pro is a systemic fungicide, so it will absorb into the vegetation and attack the disease head on, leaving the plant unharmed.

To start, first calculate your treatment area’s square footage by measuring your treatment area’s length and width and multiplying them together. To get rid of brown patch, apply Patch Pro at the labeled rate of 1-2 fluid ounces per thousand square feet of treatment area. As a preventative treatment, we recommend using 1 ounce of Patch Pro per thousand square feet with enough to sufficiently treat the area. Typically, one gallon of water will treat 1,000 square feet. If brown patch is already established in your lawn, or if temperatures and humidity are particularly high, use 2 ounces per thousand square feet. This will control the established brown patch and prevent further spread in your lawn.

We recommend using a 1-gallon hand pump sprayer to apply Patch Pro since you will be making localized treatments rather than broadcasting over the entire lawn. First, open the spray tank and fill it about halfway with water. Add the proper amount of Patch Pro, close the sprayer, and shake to distribute the chemical. Then, open the sprayer and add the remaining amount of water, up to the 1-gallon line. Close the sprayer and shake to ensure an even distribution of the chemical throughout the solution. Apply Patch Pro to areas affected by brown patch and surrounding areas to prevent spread. For preventative treatments, you may apply Patch Pro to areas that you know will be affected by brown patch when conditions become conducive for disease development. Also, treat areas in your lawn that are heavily shaded or have poor water drainage. Be sure to spray turf to the point of wet, and not runoff.

Make a follow-up application 14-21 days after your initial treatment. After about 2 weeks, you should see a noticeable reduction in size of afflicted turf.

I got brown patch!

So this video shows how/what I do to try to treat brown patch in my lawn. I put down 3 rounds of preventative, but this has been a crazy year in terms of rain. Typically the rain stops around mid to late June but we have gotten rain all the way through the first week of July with temps over 85 and even over 90. We had rain almost every day for 2 weeks or more. Hard to compete with that!

Stay tuned for more updates in the next few weeks of how my lawn progresses and what else I will be putting on it to help baby it through the summer.
