Multi-read content how thick is laminate flooring

laminate flooring

Laminate floors come in several thicknesses including 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and even 15mm; but what exactly does the different thickness mean? Are they a guide to quality, durability, price, or any other factors that might really matter when making a choice?

The key thing about laminate flooring is that the way it is made does not change with the thickness of the plank. Manufacturing laminate flooring is a smart process that involves four different layers. There is a core layer, a base layer, a decoration layer and a wear layer. The middle layer is, as you would expect, what gives the board strength and stability. The base layer provides support, the trim is what gives the floor its great beauty and the hardwearing layer is what protects your floor from daily damage and makes it easy to clean and maintain.

When choosing a laminate flooring solution, one of the first things that will influence your decision is the finish, ie the appearance of the floor. If you’re like most people, when you imagine your room, you imagine what you want your floor to look like. Maybe you want a rich, honey-colored look of the wood, or maybe you want a bright, bright white look. In any case, thanks to our wide range of laminate floors, you canlook here, you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for.

Regarding the thickness of the flooring you choose, if you choose the same flooring from the same manufacturer, differing only in thickness, there will normally be no appreciable impact on quality. What you may see is a slight drop in price for the slimmer option, but again that’s not always the case. The final durability can’t even be affected by the thickness, as long as you choose well.

The main things to consider when choosing your laminate flooring thickness are the uniformity of your subfloor and why you might need to worry about noise reduction.

If your floor is by no means flat, you should choose a thicker floor. Alternatively, if you live in an apartment or lay the floor of a room upstairs and want to reduce noise in the rooms below, opt for a thicker laminate.12mmor 15mm thick is recommended.

However, if you have a completely uniform subfloor and are not concerned about noise transmission from floor to floor or room to room, then you are more likely to opt for the slimmer option, for example.8mm thick. However, what you should always consider and seek advice from your supplier is the pitch you have in the room. Why? Because laminate flooring is known as AC resistance grade and you need to choose the right AC grade to match your expected footfall.

As you will see, at Wood and Beyond we have now decided to offer plank thicknesses of 8mm and 12mm. In our opinion, both of these options mean there’s something for everyone at a price to suit every budget. For us that means win/win because you get a great floor and we don’t hold stocks that are (literally) only a millimeter apart when in reality that millimeter isn’t a game-changer . Thinking this way allows us to keep our prices low and continue to deliver the quality you need and want.

Popular questions about how thick is laminate flooring

how thick is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring should be between 6-12mm thick. If you find thicker than 12mm, it’s an inaccurate measurement–possibly including attached padding. If you want the highest-quality, hardwood feel, you’ll want 10 or 12mm. If cost is a concern and you have a smooth subfloor, you can get by with 7 or 8mm.

What thickness laminate flooring is best?

8 to 12 mm
Thicker laminate flooring doesn’t mean it’s more durable. It will, however, be more resistant to warping and other conditions. A thickness of 8 to 12 mm is one of the most advised thickness levels for laminate flooring.

How thick is laminate flooring in inches?

Laminates vary in thickness but most average between 5/16 and 3/8 inch. In comparison, today’s solid hardwood flooring averages from 3/8 to 3/4 inch in thickness.

How thick is laminate flooring with underlay?

around 3mm thick
It’s usually around 10mm thick, whereas laminate underlay is usually around 3mm thick. If you install laminate on top of a carpet underlay, the floor will be too bouncy and spongy, which can damage the locking system and provide an uncomfortable feel.

Is 12 mm laminate better than 8mm?

Impact Resistance

12mm is much more impact resistant than 8mm. Sharp items that accidentally fall on a thicker base will have very little effect on it. That’s the reason why people prefer 12mm laminate in high traffic areas.

Is 8mm laminate flooring thick enough?

Laminate flooring should be between 6-12mm thick. If you find thicker than 12mm, it’s an inaccurate measurement–possibly including attached padding. If you want the highest-quality, hardwood feel, you’ll want 10 or 12mm. If cost is a concern and you have a smooth subfloor, you can get by with 7 or 8mm.

Is 7mm laminate thick enough?

7mm laminate flooring is ever slightly thicker than 6mm laminate flooring and is ideal for normal home installations. When installed over a quality subfloor with the right type of underlayment, 7mm laminate flooring has outstanding performance. Remember to be aware of the AC rating of your floor.

How thick can I laminate?

Laminating film thickness is measured in mils. A mil is simply the equivalent of 0.001th of an inch, so it’s pretty tiny. Film thicknesses range from 1.5 to 10 mil; in other words, they go from thin to thick. Here’s a rundown of the common thicknesses and what they’re good for.

How thick should flooring be?

Typically, solid hardwood flooring is between 5/16 and ¾ inches thick. Those are pretty standard thicknesses that serve most needs.

How thick is the floor?

The floor of one level of a home shares framing with the ceiling of the level below it. In a typical home, the entire structure between levels can be about 12 to 14 inches thick, depending on the type of joists used and the finish materials for the floor and ceiling.

Is 3mm underlayment good?

Standard underlayment.

This is the most commonly used underlayment. It is also 3mm thick (1/8” thick) and is best installed over wood subflooring. It only offers basic sound reduction. It does not keep out moisture.

Can u use carpet underlay for laminate flooring?

You absolutely cannot use carpet underlayment underneath laminate flooring. As much as you want to cut down costs on a new floor, this is not the way to do it. Installing laminate flooring over carpet underlayment will do more harm than good in the long run.

How thick should underlay be?

Generally speaking 7mm is about as thin as you want to go unless you have a specialist need for something thinner, but 8-12mm is the band most manufacturers produce carpet underlay with 9-11mm being the most popular products.

What mm flooring is best?

This means that if you want more durability and last longer, then choose a vinyl flooring that’s around 12 mil to 20 mil. It’s suggested to have a wear layer of at least 12 mil for residential spaces and 28 mil for commercial spaces.

Is it better to have thicker laminate flooring?

Since a laminate floor is a floating floor, a subfloor that has a peak or valley of over 1/8th of an inch within 40 inches of grade is not good. A thicker plank can provide superior acoustics. Because the plank is thicker, sound doesn’t travel as well. A thicker plank provides better impact resistance.
