How to Grow a Male Freesia in the Garden

Knowing how and when to plant freesia bulbs is essential to their success in the garden. Start by choosing a location with full sun or light shade in the morning and well-drained soil.

Prepare the bed by digging and tilling the soil to a depth of at least 8 inches (20 cm). Plant freesia bulbs, or stems, at least 2 inches (5 cm) deep and 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm) apart.

Freesias are at their bestPlanting in groups or batchesnot by rank. The volume of a single color makes a screen stand out. Freesias flower 10 to 12 weeks after planting field corn. You can extend the flowering season by planting bulbs weekly.

When to plant freesia

InUSDA Business Area9 and warmer, you can plant freesia in the fall. However, in cooler regions, plant field corn plants in the spring. Also, in USDA zones colder than 9, field corn plants will not survive the winter in the garden. You’ll need to dig them up at the end of the season and store them until next spring, but since the stems aren’t expensive, it’s often easier to buy a new freesia next year.

Another option is to grow them in containers so you can bring the whole pot indoors for winter storage.

How to Grow Freesias Indoors

Once the flowers and foliage are dry again, let the pot dry out and place it in a cool place until you’re ready to bloom again.

Once foliage appears, water the growing freesia regularly to keep the soil moist. Freesia needs plenty of moisture throughout the growing season, but you should let the soil dry out as the flowers fade.

Fertilize the plant in the spring with a bulb fertilizer according to the instructions on the label.

You can alsopick up dead flowersto keep the garden clean, but let the foliage die back naturally.

Freesias are excellentcut flowersalso. Cut the stems early in the morning before the hot temperatures have a chance to dry out the flowers. Cut the branches again at an angle less than an inch (2.5 cm) from the first cut while keeping them under water. Immediately put them in the water tank. You can add a flower preservative if you wish, but you won’t need it if you change the water every day.
