Multi-read content why do my dimmable lights flicker

So let’s start this discussion by removing a common misconception. Since LED blinking is caused by your power supply, some believe it can be completely avoided as long as the input power (current and voltage) remains constant.

It’s not correct. All electrical light sources flash continuously.

But if all the lights are blinking, why do some people think LED blinking is a problem?

Blinking LEDs were a common problem. This is because unlike incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps, LEDs are not durable. When the LED power is cut off, the light output stopsright now. So if connected directly to mains, the LED will turn on/off 50 times per second – enough for the human eye to see.

This is why some people claim that LEDs flicker more than older light sources. In the past, that was true. But today it is not true.

LED flicker is not a problem for modern LED installation projects. It’s because wedo notalso connect the LEDs directly to the mains. Instead, we power our LEDs usingPurpose-built LED driver.

Monitor your LEDs – how a high quality LED power supply can solve LED flickering

LED lighting requires direct current (DC) and not alternating current. This is good news, because the key to eliminating LED flicker is the type of power source you use to control your lights.

Although the lighting industry often knows its power supplies (aka “drivers”) simply as”LED Transformer”,they really are more than that. The LED driver doesn’t just lower (variable) the voltage. It also converts current from alternating current to direct current.Choose a high quality LED power supply, and it will also provide constant current to your LEDs. So you will get light withare notblinker is visible.

However, the inferior no-frills LED driver does not provide stable current. Instead, it simply converts AC to DC. This most basic type of power conversion generates an oscillating current, although the current is often twice the frequency of the input voltage. In the UK, this would translate to a frequency of 100 potential flashes per second.

Popular questions about why do my dimmable lights flicker

why do my dimmable lights flicker?

If bulbs connected to a dimmer are flickering, this is likely the reason why. Loose or poor wiring behind the switch could also cause flickering. Check the ratings for your bulbs and dimmer to be sure they’re compatible. Mismatches here can lead to common fixture problems like buzzing or flickering.

Why do my new dimmable LED lights flicker?

LED bulb flickering can be traced in almost every instance to a non-compatible dimmer switch in the lighting circuit. Modern dimmer switches create the dimming effect by switching the power supply on and off many times per second.

Is it normal for dimmable lights to flicker?

Dimmer Switches

One of the most common sources of flickering for LED bulbs is the use of dimmer switches. The majority of dimmers are made to handle higher electrical loads. This means that the low-voltage LEDs may dim or flicker if they are connected to higher-power dimmer switches.

Why does my dimmable light bulb flicker?

What Causes Dimmable LED Lights to Flicker? The main cause of flickering with dimmable LED light can usually be traced back to the dimmer switch. Dimmer switches come with a minimum compatible load (in short, the amount of Watts it can process).

How do I stop my dimmable lights from flickering?

Summary – How to stop LEDs flickering
  1. Always drive LED products using an LED power supply that’s designed for the job. …
  2. Make sure all your LED products are compatible with the control circuits and power supply you’re using.
  3. Check for loose wiring and other faulty connections. …
  4. Consider using a constant-current LED driver.

What happens if you use non dimmable bulb in a dimmer?

If you install a non-dimming LED bulb in a circuit with a dimming switch, it will likely operate normally if the dimmer is at its 100% or fully on. Dimming the bulb, will likely cause erratic behavior such as flickering or buzzing and ultimately may cause damage to the bulb.

Can flickering lights cause a fire?

Minor changes in your home’s voltage are normal, but flickering lights may indicate abnormal fluctuations. Abrupt changes in voltage from low to high can damage electronics and in rare cases cause an electrical fire.

Will dimmable lights work without a dimmer switch?

The short answer to this question is: Yes, you can use dimmable LEDs without a dimmer switch, just like normal light bulbs. This is handy to know because many retailers are reducing the number of non-dimmable LED bulbs that they stock.

How do I fix flickering lights?

How do you fix a flickering LED light?

Another thing that commonly causes flickering in LED bulbs is loose connections or circuits. This is easy to fix. Just screw the LED bulb in tighter to see of that fixes the problem. If there’s a lot of dust in the fixture, first blow out the connection points to remove the dust before putting the bulb back in.

Can a bad light switch cause flickering lights?

Faulty Light or Fixture Switch

A poor connection between the light or fixture switch and the bulb can cause flickering. Try gently wiggling the switch to see if this causes a flicker.

Do LED lights need a special dimmer switch?

A standard dimmer switch cannot be used with an LED light as you will never be able to dim the LED light either completely or not very well. LED lights need their own special electronic dimmer switch to have a fully functioning and dimming light.

What causes multiple lights to flicker?

Probable Cause: You have a bad bulb or the bulb is loose in its socket. It’s an isolated problem, solved by switching out for a new bulb or simply screwing the bulb more tightly into its socket. Just remember to turn off the light before removing or adjusting the bulb to prevent burning or shocking yourself.

Can I change a dimmer switch to regular?

You can replace the dimmer switch with a regular light switch, only from what you have described you need to install a 3-way light switch, not a single pole light switch. The typical connections are as follows: The black wire to the lone screw on the 3-way light switch.

Do dimmer switches cause fires?

A dimmer can only be a fire hazard if you fail to read and follow the enclosed installation instructions. I have installed dimmer switches for years, and not one has ever caused an electrical fire. The reasons dimmer switches get hot is fairly simple. Some dimmers get hotter than others because of their design.

In this video, Ask This Old House master electrician Heath Eastman demonstrates a variety of ways to troubleshoot and repair flickering lights.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House:

Master electrician Heath Eastman goes over some reasons as to why your lights might be flickering. Flickering lights are a problem most households deal with at some point, so Heath goes over a few common reasons why a light might be flickering and walks you through some basic troubleshooting.

Skill Level: Beginner

Loose Bulb

• To Fix: Thread the bulb tighter.

Bad Socket

• Light bulb sockets can corrode overtime, especially in outdoor fixtures.

• To Fix: With the switch powered off, check and see if the socket is in good condition. If not, it will probably need to be replaced.

Failing Switch

• The metal connections on the light switch may wear overtime, or the one installed might be a defect and never had a properly made connection at all.

• To Fix: Replace the light switch and see if it works. You can swap the switch with one from another room that you know is working to see if it works in the room that’s flickering.

LED Lights

• Some of the newer LED bulbs simply aren’t compatible with older switches, particularly dimmers.

• To Fix: Try to figure out if the current dimmer switch is “LED compatible”. If not, replace it with one that is. Also see if the LED light is a dimmable bulb.

Where to find it?

Heath demonstrated a variety of light switches and fixtures, which can be found at any home center. In general, he recommends checking the switches to ensure they’re up•to•date and operating properly to troubleshoot any issues with flickering lights.

Hi, this video shows you an easy fix for LED lights that flicker and won’t turn off when using Dimmer Switches. If you have changed over from Halogen / Incandescent lamps to LED Lamps and you are having problems then by doing the same method as shown in the video it will hopefully fix the problem. The long term solution is to get a LED dimmer fitted as it will save you more money in the long run.
