What are scale insects? What do scale insects look like? The life cycle of insects ALWAYS mealybugs Back

What are scale insects?

Mealybugs are scaly insects that suck sap from leaves and stems, causing leaves to become stunted or distorted, yellowed and wilted.

These small, white insects on trees are most often found when new, along leaf veins and at leaf joints, but they can be found anywhere on the tree.

Bug damage isn’t as fast or devastating as when you get itHouseplant mites.

But if a scale insect infestation is left untreated, the plant will eventually die. Although it usually takes them a long time to kill a plant.

What do scale insects look like?

Scale insects are small, white insects on houseplants and often look like white fluffy things on leaves and stems.

Scale insects can also be brown or cream and waxy in their immature stages.

At first glance, they don’t look like insects and are often mistaken for fungi or mold rather than bedbugs.

Total!

If the whiteflies you see on houseplants look like little whiteflies that fly when the plant is disturbed, they are whiteflies instead of scale insects.

Mealybug life cycle

The complete mealybug life cycle is about 7 to 10 weeks. It takes a week or two for the eggs to pupate, then another 6-9 weeks for the pupae to mature.

There can be several generations of mealybugs and their life cycles can overlap, which means that once they start to develop, populations can grow very quickly.

Because the eggs and pupae are so small and it takes a while for the population to grow large enough to be noticed, most people don’t spot scale insects on their houseplants until the population explodes. .

Where do mealybugs come from?

As I said before, scale insects are very sneaky. One day everything is fine, the next day your tree is covered with a layer of sticky white cotton that makes many people wonder. What causes mealybugs in the first place?

As with any other plant beetle, scale insects can come from anywhere. The most common causes are…

  • Bring home a new tree
  • Use contaminated potting soil
  • Take out indoor plants in the summer
  • Fresh flowers, fruits or vegetables brought from the garden
  • Scale insects can even come from fresh produce or flowers from the grocery store!
  • Sometimes ants bring scale insects to houseplants so that they can eat the bile produced by the insects.

How to get rid of scale insects on houseplants

As with any houseplant pest infestation, when you first notice the problem, start treating scale insects immediately.

The first thing to do is isolate the affected plant(s) to prevent scale insects from infecting your other plants.

The next thing to do is kill mealybugs with organic pest control products and methods. I advise against the use of synthetic insecticides, as scale insects are resistant to most chemical insecticides.

They are also likely to develop resistance to any chemicals they are regularly exposed to.

So steer clear of the poisonous stuff and use the safer pest control methods listed below instead! Learn more aboutNatural methods and measures of indoor plant pest control here.

How to treat scale insects on plants

One way to kill mealybugs on houseplants is to touch them with a cotton swab dipped in water.rubbing alcohol.

Rubbing alcohol kills bed bugs on contact, but to be effective it must come into direct contact with mealybugs.

When handling houseplants, be sure to check under all leaves, around leaf joints, creases and at the base of the plant for scale insects.

These elusive plant pests like to hide, so inspect the plant from many angles, as well as under each leaf. Also, dust some dirt to check the base of the stem at the point where it sticks out of the ground.

They can hide on the edges of the pot, as well as on the bottom. So be sure to check carefully, you might find scale insects hiding there.

It will take several treatments to get rid of all the scale insects, so be sure to treat your plants daily and kill any insects you see.

Make your own insect repellent at home

You can buy oneinsecticidal soapspray or make your own. My homemade mealybug spray recipe is 1 tspmild liquid soapfor 1 liter of water. Soap kills insects on contact.

If the plant is young, take it to the tub or shower to wash the leaves with this soap and water solution, then rinse.

This will kill a large number of scale insects and give you the upper hand.

Remember that some soaps can harm sensitive plants, so it’s best to test the solution on a few leaves before spraying the entire plant.

Insecticidal soap doesn’t work to keep the pests from coming back, so it’s important to keep spraying regularly until there are no more signs of the insects.

Control mealybugs with neem oil

Neem oil is a very effective natural pest control product for getting rid of mealybugs on plants.

Not only does it help kill insects, but it’s also great for preventing residual pests.

You canbuy neem oil concentrateIt’s pretty cheap and a big bottle will last a long time. Just be sure to follow the label directions.

If you get the concentrate you will need to mix it with soap to help the oil mix with the water (I always usethis liquid soapbecause it is very light).

Although neem oil has a residual effect in helping to prevent houseplant pests from returning, it may still take a few applications to get rid of scale insects.

It can also take several days of using neem oil to treat scale insects before it starts killing them, so be patient and keep applying it until the bed bugs are gone.

As an alternative to neem oil for scale insects, pre-mixedhorticultural oilWherepepper spray, and they also work very well when applied directly to scale insects.

My Proven Procedure for Long-Term Mealybug Control

Scale insects are difficult to remove and the process can be very frustrating (believe me, I’ve been there a few times myself)!

The best advice I can give you when trying to get rid of scale insects on your houseplants is to use a combination of the methods I’ve outlined above and keep fighting.

You can’t just spray the plant once and hope the bugs go away. It can take weeks or even months to kill an entire population.

Here is the procedure I use to get rid of those annoying white blurs…

Step 1:Immediately take the infected plant to the sink and wash the leaves and stems thoroughly with my soapy water solution (1 tbsp.mild liquid soapfor 1 liter of water), and wash the plants.

Then I check the pot top to bottom and along the dirt line for lurking scale insects and wash the drip pan with soapy water.

Check for mealybugs hiding under the pot trayCheck for scale insects hidden under the pot tray

2nd step:Then I would wash the plant area with soapy water and then use a cotton ball soaked in water.rubbing alcoholto disinfect the area.

If there are other trees nearby, I check them again for any signs of insects (after washing my hands).

Step 3:After everything was cleaned and disinfected, I sprayed the plantsneem oiland move it to a location away from any other trees.

Step 4:I check infested plants daily for any signs of scale insects and kill any that I see with a cotton swab dipped inrubbing alcohol.

I will spray the plant again with neem oil after a week if I am still killing scale insects daily.

I also check the plants near the infected plants daily to make sure there are no insects on them (remember to wash your hands after touching each one!).

Step 5:If no new cochineal is found after a few weeks of checking the plant, I’ll add it back to my collection, but try to put it in a new location just in case.

How to keep scale insects from coming back

Most scale insects do not appear to migrate, but scale insects can crawl up trees and travel to other crops in the area.

The worst thing is that scale insects leave the houseplant to hide and can live for a long time in gaps and crevices without a host plant.

So just when you think you’ve defeated the beast, it will come out of hiding and reinfest your houseplant when you’re not looking.

Bad infestation of mealybugs on cactus plantScale insects are harmful to cacti

Here are some things you can do to keep scale insects from coming back…

  • Scale insects can live in the soil of houseplants, so if the plant is plagued with recurring infestations, you can try removing the top layer of soil from the pot and replacing it with
  • fresh squash
  • .
  • I recommend rinsing the inside rim of the pot after removing the soil with soapy water and/or an alcohol swab to be sure to kill any insects that may be hiding there.

Look for mealybugs in soil around the pot edgesLook for scale insects in the soil around the edge of the pot

  • Remove the plant from the area and clean out any crevices where scale insects can hide. Be sure to check the outer and inner edges of pots and trays as well as the bottom of the pot for scale insects.
  • Once you have the infection under control, move the plant to a new location to avoid mealybugs that may be hiding where the plant was previously parked.

Mealybugs hiding on bottom of houseplant potScale insects hide at the base of houseplants

It’s hard to get rid of all the scale insects the first few times you try. Even if you could kill all the adults, the eggs and chicks are still very small and easy to miss.

It can be frustrating, but it’s worth keeping your favorite houseplants.

Mealybugs are common, soft-bodied scale insects that will feed on ornamentals and other plants in your garden. Similar to aphids, these pests will produce honeydew, a sweet substance that attracts ants.

The first thing you should do in any pest control plan is identifying what exactly you’re dealing with. Careless identification can lead to wrong treatment methods, costing you time and money. When dealing with mealybugs, you’re more likely to spot female mealybugs. Adult female mealybugs can grow from 1/10 of an inch to ¼ of an inch. Their bodies are multi-segmented and are surrounded by distinct waxy filaments. Male mealybugs are much rarer than female mealybugs. However, keep in mind that male mealybugs look more like flies. Males can grow to be up to 3 mm long, and they fly using 2 small wings on their backs.

Inspection is the next phase of any good pest control plan. Once you know what your pests look like, check around your property to confirm their presence or find hotspots of activity. Mealybugs can be found on buds, along stems, or under new leaves, and will usually pick a secluded spot on the plant to settle. On fruit-bearing plants or trees, you can find mealybugs on the fruits themselves, and you can also find them infesting underneath the bark of a tree as well. When inspecting plants for mealybugs, be sure to look out for the common signs of infestations: cotton-like webbing or wax, blackened mold from rotting honeydew, yellowed leaves, and warped plant growth.

After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment. Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry. To get rid of mealybugs in large areas, you’ll need to use a pesticide labeled for mealybug control, like Dominion 2L. Dominion 2L is a systemic insecticide, meaning it will get absorbed into treated plants and will kill pests that feed on those plants. This is great because many pesticides are not effective on mealybugs. Their waxy coating protects them from most direct spray applications.

To get rid of mealybugs on houseplants, you may want to use a different option that can be used in small volumes for smaller plants. Just fill a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and spray any mealybugs directly to kill them. Using alcohol on plants is generally safe for the plant, but you may want to spray a small section of the plant to look for any damage.

To prevent mealybugs, it’s best to be diligent in monitoring your plants and checking for activity, and spraying your plants when necessary. Note the health of your plants, and when something doesn’t seem right, address the problem as soon as possible. You can also attract beneficial insects, like ladybugs, by growing certain plants in your garden that those insects love. Ladybugs are natural predators for mealybugs, aphids, and other insects that feed on the sap of ornamental and garden plants, so use them as a natural deterrent for future pest activity. Be sure to make reapplications of Dominion 2L quarterly. The product will remain effective for up to 90 days, killing pests that attempt to feed on treated plants.

In this episode, let’s look into top 10 treatment options to get rid of mealybugs and aphids from your garden. Let’s see what happens to mealy bugs when you spray various solutions especially the cocktail mix for extensive mealy bug infestation.

Mealybugs are infact insects and considered sap sucking pests in gardening. They are soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. Dissolving this protective waxy layer will kill these mealy bugs. There are different entomological types of mealy bugs but in home gardening we are mainly concerned with root mealy bugs or ground mealybugs and the sap sucking leaf mealybugs. This is a complete step by step guide.

If you see mealybugs and ants together, then this is a serious issue and difficult to eradicate them. Because they have a mutual symbiotic relationship and these ants protect the bugs from predators and parasites. This also applies to aphids. The ants, especially the fire ants help mealybugs by carrying them to the tips of growing plants and in return they get to eat the honeydew excreted out of their anus.

Having said that, let’s look into the treatments:
