So if you want to easily dispose of trash under a drain (more on that later), you’ll love this guide.

To start up.

What is the Saniflo toilet?

image showing what a saniflo toilet is

Saniflo toilets (also called grinder toilets) differ from regular toilets in two ways. First, it uses a blade to suck (break down) human waste in the toilet. Second, instead of flushing waste through an in-floor drainage system, a vacuum toilet system uses a centrifugal pump to flush waste out of the toilet bowl and into the general waste system.

How does a Saniflo (Macerator) toilet work?

image showing how a saniflo toilet works

A Saniflo toilet is made up of four main components. They are called:

  • Float switch (membrane)
  • Micro switch
  • Blade (macerator)
  • Helix

Each has a separate function that works together to help remove waste from your home. We’ve noted each of the components below in the order in which they work.

Step 1: Razor Blade Waste

When flushing, waste (urine, feces, toilet paper) is transferred from the toilet bowl to a slide. When the waste hits the blade, it is broken down into smaller pieces. This allows waste to be easily dumped into the general waste system.

Stage 2: waste activated float switch (membrane)

After the trash is sucked up by the blade, the trash will continue to be collected in a storage tank (also called a heap). Over time waste builds up in the tank, slowly raise the float switch. When the waste reaches a certain level, the float switch senses the water pressure and operates the micro switch.

Step 3: The micro switch activates the propeller

Then the micro switch will activate the propeller. The impeller is the part that powers the pump, transferring waste down the drain pipe and out of the toilet bowl.

Stage 4: The turbine pumps the waste

Finally, now that the turbine is activated, the waste is pumped out of the vacuum system and into the local drainage system.

When to use Saniflo toilets?

In most situations, a conventional toilet system acts as a much more convenient and less expensive option than a saniflo toilet system. But sometimes saniflo is easier to install, cheaper and takes less time. These situations include:

Your plumbing is not designed for a regular toilet

If you don’t have an existing underground drain, it’s much cheaper to install a wall-hung toilet than a conventional toilet. No need to chisel out the floor or foundation, brick toilets can be installed without any type of drain line.

You want a bathroom installed quickly

If a quick bathroom setup is important, a covered toilet is a better option. Installing a toilet can be a big undertaking for a plumber, especially if you need to install drain lines underground. Taking around two days to install, a toilet grinder is a much faster job.

You don’t want to remove the wall or floor

For example, if you have a private bathroom, you may not want to remove your bedroom wall or floor. In this case, a macerator toilet system would be the perfect choice.

You don’t want to install the toilet permanently

In some cases, you may simply need to install temporary toilets for elderly or disabled tenants. In this situation, it is more practical to install a saniflo toilet that can be easily removed at any time.

What are the pros and cons of Saniflo toilets

If you research Saniflo products, I’m sure you’ll find them advertised as breakthrough products that will make all your home improvement dreams come true.

But seriously, why invest in a Saniflo toilet?

Here we list the main reasons to buy a macerator toilet.

image showing the pros and cons of buying a saniflo toilet

Advantages of Saniflo toilets

Draining from below the drain line

When the flush system is activated in a standard toilet, the waste is sent to the general evacuation system by gravity. It’s simply the toilet pipe that goes straight down the drain.

Where the toilet is located below or a good distance from the general sewer line, it may be necessary to empty the trash can. Simply, the toilet pipe does not go straight down the drain, but rather has to go up or to the side before reaching the general waste line.

In this case, it would be appropriate to install a macerator toilet to ensure that the toilet flushes efficiently and the waste pipes are not clogged.

Save energy and water compared to conventional toilets

If you’re environmentally conscious, you’ll be happy to know that sewage pumps are much more efficient than standard toilet bowls. First, waste shredding ensures that you get a steady stream of waste. Second, using a helix to speed waste down the drain uses far less water than a standard toilet bowl.

Easier to install than a regular toilet

Installing a standard toilet can be quite arduous and time consuming. Fortunately, one of the main advantages of Saniflo toilets is their ease of installation. To avoid having to break up floors (or banks), a descaler-compatible suction pump means you don’t need to make many changes to your plumbing. This ensures that construction work is completed quickly and inexpensively.

Saniflo toilets last as long as any regular toilet

Saniflo products typically last somewhere in the region for 10-15 years. In most cases, with proper care, Saniflo systems will last much longer. It also depends on how often you plan to use the toilet. All toilets are tested up to 50,000 flushes. In many cases, this period may be longer than 10 years.

Disadvantages of buying a Saniflo toilet.

Much louder than regular toilets

Deodorizing toilets can be much louder than regular toilets. This is because the vacuum breaks down the waste and the pump inside is needed to move the waste out of the toilet and into your sewage system.

Tends to be congested more often

Detergent toilets tend to clog easily. Put only organic waste (urine, faeces, toilet paper) in the saniflo system. Tampons or baby wipes will clog the toilet bowl.

You should drain the water at least once a day

It is important to rinse your saniflo at least once a day. If the water is not flushed daily, the substances inside the saniflo can dry out, causing the tank to fail, which is very difficult to restore.

Cannot be used if power is off

A saniflo toilet or macerator relies on electricity to power a machine that draws water and pumps waste out of the toilet. In the event of a power outage (or if you do not pay your electricity bill), you will not be able to use saniflo.
