Five sizes and types of molds

  • top left: older split die, with top set screw
  • bottom left: one-piece mold with upper adjustment screw
  • in the center: a one-piece die with side adjustment screws (barely visible in the complete photo)
  • right: two molds with side adjustment screws

A cylindrical blank, usually slightly smaller than the required diameter, machined withconical(chamfering) at the end of the thread. This chamfer allows the die to easily attach to the workpiece before cutting enough wire to pull itself out.[8]

Adjusting screws allow the mold to be compressed or enlarged to accommodate small changes in size, due to material, workmanship or mold sharpness.

Each tool is used independently, but is usually sold in couplers of both types, one die and three nozzles. Some sets may provide fewer taps. The common assemblies shown are designed for manual operation, but different types such as helical or spiral can be used in production tools such asCNCmachining tools, usedead headto manufacture large volumes of threaded parts.

Lubricants

Cutting fluid

Using the right lubricant is essential for most mining and reaming operations. Recommended lubricants for some common materials are:

Carbon steel
Petroleum-based or synthetic cutting oils.
Alloy steel
Petroleum cutting oil mixed with a small amount (about 10%) of kerosene or mineral oil. This mixture is also suitable for use with stainless steel.
iron and steel
No lubricants. Fans should be used to remove chips.
Aluminum
Kerosene or mineral spirits mixed with a small amount (15-25%) of petroleum cutting oil. WD-40 and 3-in-1 oil are acceptable alternatives in some cases.
Brass
Kerosene or mineral alcohol.
The copper
Kerosene or mineral oil mixed with a small amount (10-15%) of petroleum-based cutting oil.

During sharpening and boring operations of power tools, the tools and parts must be permanently lubricated.
