Clean grout dust from slate

Sealed and unsealed blocking media
The mist oozes from the slab sealed with grout, but it leaves the uncovered bricks dull.

If after grouting you still have grout residue on your new slab, giving it a dull and lifeless appearance, be concerned. Typically, a Scotch-Brite pad, water and a little rubbing agent will remove the grout and the dull surface it causes. Since you haven’t tried anything to remove the haze from the grout, I’m guessing it’s possible the slab wasn’t sealed properly before the grout was applied. Porous brick, especially a stone like slate, requires two or three applications of a special grout. Tile and stone sealers sometimes work, but not always.

Try using a grout remover available at physical stores. However, it is not always effective in blocking media. If that doesn’t work, chances are the clevis isn’t removable. Call a professional mason for a final evaluation. By the way, hydrochloric acid often aggravates this condition.

Video tutorials about how to remove grout from slate tiles

What’s up guys and gals! So, we got this beautiful slate tile installed in our new Mud room addition. We picked out the mauntauk black slate tile from Home Depot for this project and used extra large grout lines with very light gray grout to further contrast the tile and grout. Anyway, all was well until the contractor decided to smoother the grout all over the slate tile as they normally do with ceramic tile. Only with natural stone slate tile, grout can make it’s way into the grooves or as I call them veins and once dry, it makes for a tedious and long job for anyone to clean it out.

In this video I demonstrate how you can use a non-abrasive drill brush and a paint stick to remove most of the dried grout from your slate tile. After I had already shot the video, I came to realize that the paint stick was sometimes better to use than the brush, so in essence all you need is:

– water and sugar mixture

– paint stick

– patience

This job was very tedious and time consuming, but honestly I don’t see any other way to get the grout off of the slate tile. Maybe there is a commercial machine with a big pad that can possibly remove the grout quicker and w/out damage, but for my small space I was able to get 98% of the grout and I was happy with the results.

I hope you find this video helpful. Thanks for watching.
