Walls, often seen as an element of interior design, are also great for creating landscapes. A landscape wall can be a free floor to delimit an area, to create a backdrop for a garden or to create privacy. Or a landscape wall can be used to retain soil after excavation, such as a driveway or patio. In the second case, they are calledsolid wall.

Causes of Retaining Wall Problems

strong wallhave to work much harder than freestanding walls. In addition to supporting their own weight, they must resist lateral forces due to soil entrapment. Sometimes the soil becomes saturated with water, which can create tremendous forces, especially for slow-draining, expanding clays.

Therefore, special arrangements are made — or should be made — whenbuild a retaining wall:

  • It must have a “sandbar” or not, so it leans towards the ground it is holding.
  • Fasteners, also called dead anchors, must be installed to secure the wall to the correct ground behind the wall.
  • Drains should be placed behind the base of the wall to allow water to drain away, before pressure can build up and push against the wall.
  • Foundation, or a compacted layer of gravel, should also be used to support the wall, especially if the ground is loose or frozen.

If there are no retaining bars, or the anchors are inadequate or missing, or the drainage system is blocked, or the foundation is unstable, the retaining wall may begin to tilt, sink or move. Plant roots can also add pressure; The same applies to the weight of objects placed on the floor above and behind walls (eg parked cars or outbuildings).

Retaining Wall Repair Options

Whether a retaining wall is built of stone, cinder block, concrete, or wood, it can begin to bow. When this happens, homeowners have two options: tear down the wall, dig, clear the drain and rebuild, or call a nail technician.

A professional can quickly stabilize the wall and, in many cases, return it to its original position. Foundation repair companies are used to repairing foundation walls using similar techniques.

Fixed retaining wall

A widely accepted method used by foundation repair contractors is the use of torsion anchors.

  • The spiral blades are welded to the steel shaft to form an anchor that looks a bit like a giant screw.
  • Holes are drilled in the wall to match the diameter of the blade, then a hydraulic rotary device is used to drive the anchor through the wall and into the back ground.
  • Then a threaded adapter extending across the face of the wall is attached to the rod and the hole is patched.
  • Finally, a steel plate is placed over the threaded rod and secured with a large nut.

When this is done with the correct amount of anchors, the wall is stabilized. Depending on the case, the nuts can be gradually tightened to return the wall to its original position.

Using twist anchors to restore retaining walls is significantly less expensive than tearing down walls and starting over. It’s also a lot less obtrusive, especially if the wall runs along your driveway!

Today we’re rebuilding a retaining wall that wasn’t built correctly. We’re gonna show you how to build a retaining wall that WON’T fall over. It’s not crazy complicated, comes down to a few simple factors:

1. Proper compaction of your subgrade

2. Bury a footer course of wall block below grade

3. Install drainage behind the wall so water can escape

4. Backfill with clean stone

5. Use geogrid reinforcement if required by spec

6. Use separation fabric over top your clean stone backfill, to keep topsoil from migrating down into the backfill

You follow those steps, you’ll have a wall that lasts a long time.

The wall block used was Techo Bloc Suprema.
