Stone surface installation

Materials behind the scenes for imitation stone veneer
These elements are essential for a durable and trouble-free wall.Applying grout to imitation stone veneer
Imitation stone can be glued to the wall with mortar.

Brick and stone are realheavyand need strong support. When a house is under construction and plans to have a natural stone or brick siding, builders often build a brick ledge into the foundation by laying the foundation over the frame of the house. Adding a brick sill to an existing home is a difficult and expensive undertaking.

The do-it-yourself alternative is to apply artificial stone products that do not require brick ledges. The artificial stone looked decent, but the new generation of fine, fake stone is almost indistinguishable from real stone. The new imitation stone consists of plain cement with a soft, lightweight pumice-like putty that makes it easier to cut with a circular or 4-1/2-in saw. angle grinder with construction blade.

Because imitation stone is very light, it can be glued to specially prepared wall surfaces with ordinary mortar. It is very easy to apply and although you will not save anything in terms of material costs, you will save a large amount of labor.

Some products, such as imitation marble, require a coating between the stones or bricks. Others, like the one pictured, are designed to be installed with tight, grout-free joints to give walls a “stacked” look. Other materials can be made in two ways. Go to a local supplier (search “Brick” and “Stone” online) and check out the display walls.

Depending on the style of stone or brick, you can get the right L-corners, keystones for arches, and sills to complete the project in style. All the products you need for surface preparation and finishing the project are available from your supplier.

In the photo, you will see the “behind the scenes” layers of materials needed for a durable, trouble-free wall.
