contact paper for countertops. Featured image. How to apply contact paper for a kitchen update that is cheap and looks beautiful. This DIY tutorial with faux marble is renter friendly and perfect for fixing ugly counters. Click to see how to do this yourself!

Last week I freshened up my kitchen by painting the cabinets and taping up a contact sheet. I’m not ready for a remodel, so I’m making budget fixes to make it look nicer for now. The biggest problem is my dark brown granite countertop. Since I wanted a softer look, I used gray marble contact paper for the counter. Want to see the DIY? !

contact paper for counters

Who benefits from this project?Table top contact paper is a great project if you have a counter that you don’t like, that is old or boring. If you’re not ready to replace your entire countertop – perhaps for time or budget reasons or if you’re renting, this is the perfect solution!

Above I linked to the contact sheet I purchased. When I received it a few weeks ago it was listed for $23 for a roll. I want to share some other options-

Want to avoid seams?*** I marked 26 inch wide contact papers with an asterisk. The counter is 24 inches wide, so a 26 inch piece of contact paper should cover the top and lip of the counter. This will give a much neater look.

I would like to order a larger one! Mine is 24 inches wide, so if I run the exposed sheet up the sides, the counter front is still brown.

step 1- clean

Start by cleaning the work surface well. I used a cloth and all purpose cleaner. Be sure to remove any debris or oil – both of which can bubble up on the counter when applied.

step 2 – cut

Next, cut the exposed piece of paper. I work with the left side of the counter and I work with the right side. I used a fabric tape measure to measure the top of the counter (including the cow’s nose). Be careful, it is better to have a little more than a little.

Mark the back of the exposed paper with a pencil, draw a line and cut along this line with scissors. The back of my contact paper has registration marks that make it easier to keep the line straight.

step 3 apply

And now it’s almost time to put on the contact paper! One trick I wanted to share was to cut a small section of the contact paper. This causes you to have a small sticky area. I found this helpful when ordering my first piece. Lay down that less sticky part, then start removing the rest of the backing.

Another piece of advice I have is to WORK SLOWLY! This is similar to applying a background image, but the propensity to get bubbles is MUCH higher. I’ve found the most success removing the backing 1/4 inch at a time and smoothing with the background smoothing tool (using the felt face).

Continue to smooth the contact until you have passed the front lip of the face over the counter. Since my counter is shaped like a cow’s nose, it’s especially difficult to lay it flat. My contact paper is a bit long, so I had to use a precision knife to cut it.

step 4- go around the faucet

contact paper for countertops. How to apply contact paper for a kitchen update that is cheap and looks beautiful. This DIY tutorial with faux marble is renter friendly and perfect for fixing ugly counters. Click to see how to do this yourself!

I’m afraid to go around faucets and sinks. I tried to take this step very slowly and meticulously. To go around the faucet I cut a line and a circle – to have a seam behind the faucet. I cut the circle and kept cutting until I got inside.

Remember that it is better to start with insufficient contact and adjustment than to make a mistake.

Once I had a good faucet hole to make, I cut a hole with scissors to open up the sink. This would then allow me to easily cut off the excess exposed paper.

I applied contact paper. It took a while because I went around a lot of areas while lining up the seams.

I finished the sink by sculpting the top of the counter. The brown granite was still visible, so I cut small strips and placed them around the edge. Honestly, this part looks a bit messy and I’m nervous about it. If I had to do it again, I’d try folding the contact paper and sweeping it around the sink.

step 5

Finally, finish by smoothing and pinning any bubbles. You can also try using a hair dryer to remove the suds.

They’re not perfect yet – I have to do something to erase the dark line between backlash and counter. I’m thinking of orderingThis Instatrimsticky (but I think I can remove it later when I renovate and want to sell or donate the granite)

I was also not happy with the sink area. A reader suggested buyingwhite gorilla ribbonfor the edges.

Frequently asked questions about contact paper for countertops

I would like to answer some of the questions I received about this project.

What is the durability of contact paper on the table top? Does it hold water?

From everything I’ve read, these will last. I will NOT cut them – I always use a cutting board anyway. I also would NOT place the hot pan directly on the contact paper.

As for water, I have heard that it is very resistant even in contact with water. They are plastic so I hope they fit. There is a super narrow seam on the left side of the sink. This is the part that worries me the most about dressing well.

You can also sweep along the faucet and where the counter hits the stake to make it more durable.

How do you clean them?

I will continue to use all purpose cleaners and Clorox cloths or wipes. I will keep you posted on how they maintain daily cleaning. We eat just about every meal at home, so these will be used.

How do I remove contact paper from the worktop?

You just need to remove it. It really gets stuck there, but when you’re pulled sideways you just need a bit of muscle to pull it up.

Can you see the seams? How remarkable are they?

contact paper for countertops. How to apply contact paper for a kitchen update that is cheap and looks beautiful. This DIY tutorial with faux marble is renter friendly and perfect for fixing ugly counters. Click to see how to do this yourself!

Here is a seam and some bubbles. They are somewhat remarkable. That’s why I recommend a larger contact document. Going around the faucet gets trickier, though, if I’m done with a big job.

Do you have a video about it?

I have a video of me installing these countertops on my Instagram. You cansee them under this highlight.

is there a repeating pattern or are you just defining it as is?

There is no repeat pattern. It’s a bit random. So you can just lay it down and not worry about pattern matching.

HAVE YOU ENTERED AN ANTI-AGING CONTEST?

Is not. I need this tape to use around the sink. I barely have enough or I will. I didn’t think folding it was so difficult.

How long did it take you to do this?

It took me 2h30 to install it. Even so, I spent a lot of time taking photos and writing Instagram stories.
