Multi-read content how to attach a pedestal sink to the wall

Removing a pedestal sink is usually pretty easy, unless someone has used construction glue or glue to make sure it doesn’t move. Then that becomes the challenge. This is one of those situations where you hope for the best but expect the worst.

A pedestal sink rests on a base. Under the sink you will find several holes that allow the installer to securely fasten the bolts to the wall. In most cases, the sink is attached to the wall in these places and then mounted around the perimeter.

Once someone has used the adhesive, the sink will be very difficult to remove without damaging the drywall. So expect that. You can try using a long blade to cut the adhesive around the perimeter. What you will find is that the adhesive will be extremely stiff and difficult to cut. If you are lucky enough to be able to cut through, cut the bottom of the sink first, then cut through the top while you support the weight of the sink.

You want to avoid letting the sink pull the paper off the drywall and strip the texture. Even if you are able to cut through the adhesive, you will have a hard bead of glue still attached to the wall. You can use a whetstone knife to get most of them off the wall, but you’ll be dealing with a drywall repair or using a larger sink to cover up the mess.

Several times I hit the sink to break it. I don’t recommend doing this, but as a last resort you can deal with it. However the sink comes out of the wall, be prepared for a drywall repair.

Loosen the slip nuts at both ends of the P-trap using channel-lock pliers. Be careful not to exert too much downward force on the suspended pedestal sink.

When a plumber installs the sink, it gets fastened to the wall and the pedestal goes in only after all the plumbing has been completed. This means you can remove the pedestal without removing the sink or plumbing.

Learn how to install a pedestal sink with this complete step-by-step video.

Is your bathroom a tad small?

Do you want to remodel your bath and are thinking of a pedestal sink?

Pedestal sinks are pretty affordable and can open up your space.

This video will show a beginner DIYer how to

-determine if the pedestal sink will work

-install a new faucet onto the sink

-mount the sink to the wall

-install all the plumbing without leaks

The first step is to buy a pedestal sink and make sure the cut-out in the pedestal fits the plumbing setup, i.e. P-Trap and shutoff valves.

Dry fit the sink onto the pedestal. Draw the hole positions of the sink on the wall.

Remove the sink and check if the hole positions are on a stud or wood blocking. If this is the case you can use lag screws to attach the sink to the wall. If you have just drywall you can use standard toggle bolts, although I recommend inserting wood into the wall and using lag screws.

Install the new faucet onto the sink. I bought the Delta faucet in this video from Faucet Depot, which has awesome prices. You should totally check them out if you need to buy a faucet or anything else for your bathroom

Make sure all the plumbing connections are tight and leak proof. Especially the rubber gasket that seals the drain to the sink.

Dry fit the sink to the pedestal a second time and see if the drain is long enough to fit into the P-Trap. If it’s not you have to put an extension tube on the drain. My video shows you all the details of how to do this
