Multi-read content when measuring curtains what comes first

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-1

Measure forcurtainis a little hen and an egg; should the column be mounted first? Should skylights be measured? I’m here to tell you that you’re fine as long as you understand what you’re doing.

In an ideal world, when measuring blinds, you would start with a blank canvas; a window withoutpole/rail up but sometimes it’s already there and you have to find the size to buy. I would say in an ideal world because you could always hang a rod to match your curtains but if the curtain only drops 90 inches and you hung your rod 92 inches from the floor then you’re out of luck. I’ll briefly walk you through what to do in each case, but first let me give you some tips you can work on when measuring your curtains.

My first tip for measuring curtains is to use a metal tape measure. I’ve worked in Home Focus/Hickeys stores for years and seen all kinds of crazy things; those ropes, pieces of wool, plastic bags and that outrageous incident where a woman told me her window was half the length of her arm!! Let me tell everyone, these are elongated or weird and will give you an inaccurate measurement.

The second suggestion I have when measuring curtains is to use what you know; if you’re comfortable with thumbs, use thumbs. Both poles and ready-made blinds will be listed in inches and centimeters, and if you get really stuck our staff will help you convert.

Measurement without post/rail:

Measure the width of your window horizontally, plaster to plaster and top to bottom. Then add 15cm (6″) above the window and 15-25cm (6-10″) on each side of the window to account for the size of the columns/rails. This allows the curtains to open when the windows are open, maximizing the light entering your room. Usually, the larger the window, the wider the post you have.

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-2

Measured by rising pole:

If you have apoleupwards, measure the width of the column, excluding the ends (ends), measure the drop from just below the column to where you want the curtain to fall.

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-3

Measure with rails:

If you have a hanger, measure the width of the track, including any overlaps or reversals, measure the drop from the top of the track to where you want the curtains to fall.

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-4

If you are thinking of buying custom curtains, stop here and visitlocal storeequip this information.

If you are looking for ready made curtains, read on:

Now that we’ve figured out the size of our columns/rails, we need to figure out what size curtains to buy. Without going into too much detail, you want your curtains to be about twice the width of the columns/rails, this is basically so they’ll be nicely grouped and look their best.

Use the handy little chart below to determine the width you need:

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-5

Now that you know the width, the drop is a simpler prospect, you hang your curtains just below a windowsill, radiator or floor. I have listed the standard sizes in the chart below, so all you have to do is choose the size closest to the size you want.

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-6

Let’s make a practical example of measuring curtains:

Get this window in our training room here:

How-To-Measure-For-Curtains-7
I measured horizontal width = 43″ (109cm)
Drop down = 34.5″ (88cm)

So adding 6″ (15cm) to each side we estimate our pole should be 55″ (139cm) wide and adding 6″ (15cm) above we get 40.5″ (103 cm).
So according to the chart above, our blinds will be 66″ x 54″ (167cm x 137cm) and there you have it!!

Now you know the size you need, shop our gorgeous bulkReady made curtains.

Popular questions about when measuring curtains what comes first

when measuring curtains what comes first?

Curtain measurements are always written with the width first and then the length. For example, a panel that is 46″ x 54″ is 46 inches wide and 54 inches long.

What is the rule for measuring curtains?

Measure the width of the rod from left to right. A common rule for displaying curtains properly says the curtains finished width should be at least 2 times the width of your window (if not more – sheers can be 3 times the window width) to achieve a look of proper fullness.

Are curtains measured from top to bottom?

Ready-made curtains: Ready-made curtains are always stated in width by length dimensions that are stated in inches. For most curtains, the length is measured from the top of the fabric panel to the bottom of the hem.

How wide should curtains be for 72 inch window?

Let’s say you want standard, thick curtains to cover your 72-inch window. You’ll want to look for curtains that measure between 144 and 180 inches wide. Bear in mind that this is the total width to aim for, not the width for each curtain if you intend to have two (one on either side).

How much gather should a curtain have?

The actual amount of gather depends on heading styles and personal preference, but as a general rule the width of your curtains should amount to double the width of your track. This is referred to as ‘two times gather’.

Are curtains measured in pairs?

All our ready made curtains are sold as pairs, and the sizes stated refer to the size of each curtain. For example, in a pair of curtains 46″ wide x 54″ length, there will be two curtains, each measuring 46″ wide.
Track/Pole Width Recommended curtains width (each)
90″-132″ (220-335cm) 132 inches (335cm)*

How much wider Should curtain rod be than the window?

Additionally, be sure to choose a curtain rod that’s wider than your window. This allows curtains to be pulled completely to the side of the window and gives the appearance of a larger space. The rod itself should be 8 to 12 inches longer than the width of the window, which allows for 4 to 6 inches on either side.

How much wider should curtains be than the window?

2 to 2.5 times
How wide should curtains be? To ensure that curtain panels look ample when closed, they should have a combined width that is 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window/rod. That means if you are ordering Grommet style or Rod-pocket style, the total drapery width should be at least 2 times the window/rod widths.

How far below window should curtains hang?

1″ below the bottom of the window apron. Crisp and unfussy. These aren’t as popular as they used to be, but apron curtain lengths are still acceptable and undeniably practical. Your curtains won’t gather dust and dirt from the floor, and they’ll be easy to open and close.

How do you calculate fabric for curtains?

There’s a simple calculation to work out how much curtain fabric you need. First, multiply the track/pole width by your chosen fullness (eg. Pole width 150cm x 2.5 = 375). Next, divide that figure by the fabric width, which is typically 137cm (375 divided by 137 = 2.73).

What does 84 panel mean for curtains?

The sizes are listed width by width. The curtain panel is 54 inches wide by 84 inches long. Before choosing curtains, it is advisable to install a curtain rod.

How wide should curtains be for a 36 inch window?

According to Curtainshop.com, finished curtains should be twice the width of the window, so if your window is 36 inches wide, you need panels that are at least 72 inches across. If you’re making your own curtains, remember to add a couple inches so you can finish, or hem, the sides.

How far should Curtain rods extend?

Curtain rods should extend at least 3 to 6 inches past the window frame. Just as hanging curtains above the window frame makes the window appear taller, Bob Vila writes that extending the curtain rod past the window frame makes the window appear wider.

How wide should curtains be for 60 inch window?

For example, for a 60-inch window with two curtain panels, add 24 inches to 60 inches (window width) and divide by 2 (number of panels) to get 42 inches. The two panels ordered each need to be at least 42 inches wide.

What is the standard drop for curtains?

Most curtain designs come in standard drop sizes of 54”, 72”, 90” and 108” so you may have to round up to the nearest size. For example, if you measure your drop and it is 147cm (58”) in length and you wanted your curtains to sit off the floor you would round this up to the 72” drop curtains.
