Pineapple

For me, pineapple is the perfect tropical fruit. It may have thorns on the outside, but inside is precious, golden flesh that appeals to any plate of food.

And is it the taste? Oh my God. Incredibly sweet and delicious! It also has moderate sweetness mixed with lovely sweetness, creating a wonderful combination that is hard to resist.

However, if it’s not ripe, you’ll end up with a boring, bland, or overpowering taste. Plus, it will leave unwanted spikes on your tongue! I’m sure you don’t want to experience that horrible pineapple, hence the importance of knowing if it’s ripe.

Pineapple has a tough, prickly exterior, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the juice underneath. Here’s how to tell when pineapple is ripe.

Pineapple Illustration

How do you know if a pineapple is ripe?

It’s really easy. You just need to check a few key points: look, feel, weight and smell. Follow these guidelines and I’m sure you’ll get the perfect sweet pineapple.

A glance

You want the entire exterior to be yellow – top to bottom. Not yellow green, not gray blue, just solid yellow.

The more golden the exterior, the riper – simpler the interior. If it starts to turn slightly orange, it means it’s overripe.

Also, don’t even think about buying a green pineapple, expecting it to ripen within a few days. Once the pineapple is harvested, the pineapple will no longer ripen.

So if it’s too green, especially at the base, don’t even consider buying it. You want it to be at least light yellow.

Check for skin and leaf discoloration. If it has a dark brown stain, throw it away.

The feeling

Like many other fruits, one way to tell if a pineapple is ripe is to gently squeeze the outside. Be careful though, these leaves have many thorns!

The outside should be just a little soft. A ripe pineapple will have a number to give. If it’s too soft, it will be too sour! Avoid hard pineapples at all costs.

Smell

Finally, smell your pineapple! The base should have a sweet, fruity scent. If it produces a foul, fermentable odor, like that of wine or vinegar, then it is past its infancy.

Weight

Pineapple weight can actually be a pretty good indicator to help measure ripeness. If the pineapple seems heavy for its size, you’re on the right track!

A heavier pineapple (for its size) is usually a sign that the fruit is luscious, ripe, and ready to eat.

How to store pineapple?

whole pineapple

When the pineapple is ripe, store it in the refrigerator. This will extend their shelf life by 3-5 days. However, don’t even think about freezing the whole pineapple! It will just leave you with a hard fruit that cannot be cut.

Sliced pineapple

  • The best place to store pineapple slices is also the refrigerator. It will stay fresh there for up to 3 to 4 days. Leaving them at room temperature will ferment the fruit. And you don’t want that.
  • However, if you want them to last a little longer than three days, sprinkle a little lemon or orange juice on the fruit. This will prevent them from browning.
  • Also remember to wrap the pineapple in cling film or aluminum foil. Or just put them in an airtight box. The goal is to avoid contact with other foods, as it will readily absorb odors and flavors from nearby foods. You don’t want grilled pineapple chicken, do you?
  • If you want to store your pineapple for 10-12 months, freezing is the best option. Of course, it won’t be as crispy and delicious as when it was freshly baked, but it would still be a good ingredient for cooking.

To freeze, place the pineapple slices on a baking sheet. Don’t let the pieces touch each other, as once frozen they will be hard to break apart.

Quick freeze the pineapples for four hours, then transfer them to a freezer bag. Remove excess air, seal and freeze.

How to ripen a pineapple?

Like I said, pineapple won’t ripen after being peeled. What gives it its softness is in the upper. So once you separate the fruit from the stem, that’s it. It won’t be sweet anymore.

But there are ways to “ripen” fruit if you accidentally buy unripe fruit. It won’t make it sweeter, but at least you’ll get a smoother consistency.

  • Place the pineapple near fruits that contain ethylene, the hormone responsible for fruit ripening. If you come into contact with apples, bananas and tomatoes, the ethylene they secrete will also cause the pineapple to soften.
  • Store it at room temperature for five to seven days. This will speed up the fermentation process. Some people also say that putting a polybag or a paper bag works too!
  • Place it upside down, with the leaf down and the base up. There may be some sugary starch at the bottom, so placing it upside down can help the starch spill out!
  • Let’s bury it in rice. This speeds up the ripening process.

If all else fails, don’t give up! You can always sweeten pineapple by cooking.

Cook your pineappleto release the fruit’s natural sugars. It will be sweeter when it caramelizes.

No time to cook ? Fairput it in the oven! It’s the same concept, but using a different device.

Put the brown sugar on it.Whether baking or roasting fruit, adding less sugar will make the fruit sweeter.

Simmer the pineappleto offset the effects of bromelain. This enzyme is what causes the tingling sensation in the tongue when you eat unripe pineapple.

Place your pineapple slices in a saucepan and pour some water. When the water boils, lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain the liquid and serve at room temperature.

Not a cooking technique, but did you know thatsprinkle some salton your pineapple will make it sweeter? This neutralizes the acidity of the fruit, giving the fruit its natural sweetness. Works all the time. Try it!
