Discs have been used with high-speed angle grinders for decades, but new technology now makes them an attractive alternative to standard grinding wheels. Significantly improved materials – grain structure, bond, backing and backing plates – increase grinding, blending and finishing rates with one-tenth the noise of a hard wheel.

By providing the user with better control, modern flip flops also require less refinishing to repair damage caused by hard wheels. Finally, they are lightweight, flexible and last longer, increasing efficiency by extending replacement intervals.

Here are the six components that make up the modern flip dish and the benefits they provide.

First: what is an intervertebral disc?

Abrasive discs are an abrasive product designed for right angle grinder applications consisting of overlapping abrasive “turnovers” bonded radially to a disc. Discs have become popular due to advantages such as rapid stock removal and the ability to grind, blend and finish in one product.

Second: Why use Flap Disc?

Multi-flipping discs remove five times more material with less punching of parts than standard wheels. They are also easier to control, resulting in better part quality and fewer changeovers. No need to change the wheel, users experience less downtime, less wear, loading, and part discoloration. In addition to being easy to use, discs are preferred by operators because they produce less vibration and noise.

And now for the six main ingredients.

  1. Disc shape: flat, conical and compressed

Intervertebral discs come in three forms. The choice you prefer depends on whether you want the smoothest finish possible or need to remove as much material as possible in a short time.

Plate with flat lid(also known as T27) is used for working on flat surfaces and is most often used for edge grinding and sanding.

Conical cover plate(also known as T29) is designed for excellent surface conductivity and active use. Many users choose this shape for heavy material removal (welds) on flat grinding applications to remove material as quickly as possible. Because they are tilted at an 8 degree angle, they provide more surface area for stock removal on horizontal surfaces.

Recently, the market has been introducedcompressed disc, edge and crumb grinding is effective in removing heavy welds. With a 4 degree grind angle, the edges of the cap will break down material more slowly. This prolongs life and, since discs eliminate the need to stock different types, greatly reduces inventory requirements. This shape gives the user a rugged edge and increases performance.

  1. Bonding and support materials

The two most common types of adhesives and backing materials used in disc applications are poly-cotton and polyester fabrics.

The poly-cotton fabric is designed to hold the grain better while remaining flexible compared to a polyester backing. Although less flexible, polyester fabric offers better strength, durability and lifespan.

  1. Base: fibreglass, plastic and metal

There are three types of disc liners: fiberglass, plastic, and metal.

Fiberglass, or phenolic, is arguably the most popular because it is lightweight, durable, and forms a tight bond with the adhesive without contaminating the part. Because they are made up of multiple layers, fiberglass backing panels have a higher mesh density for improved performance and durability.

Also known as a decorative bracket, the plastic bracket is another popular choice due to its versatility and relatively low cost. Nylon is the most common plastic used to make discs and can shrink during operation (hence the alternative name), which in some cases can increase disc life by up to 65%. Manufacturers vary in recommended lengths for cutting, but one of the most common is 3⁄8 inches from the edge of the original media. Make sure the product is listed as cuttable, as some plastic liners can break.

Metal baseplates, most commonly aluminum, provide greater stability and support than the other two, but more expensive, options. However, for applications such as metals and other hard materials, the aluminum base material reveals itself when the material is worn and can chisel the part, requiring additional work as well as contamination.

  1. Applause density

Planar density is the total wear area used by the caps on the disc. The size of the wear zone depends on the number of flaps used, the angle at which they are used and the distance between the flaps.

Smaller density discs are effective for fast stock removal and heavy duty applications, while high density discs should be used for finishing work or working on curved or irregular surfaces.

  1. Nuts

To get the most out of the cover plate, select the pellet material best suited to the application. The three most common types are ceramic, zirconia, and aluminum.

Thanks to recent technological innovations, the market has seen a dramatic increase in the use of ceramic abrasives. New precisely shaped, self-sharpening balls and the unique crystal structure continuously reveal a new edge that makes the new ceramic abrasives significantly more efficient and productive than traditional ceramic balls. Ceramic beads won’t crack to always deliver the sharpest edges possible. The new ceramic balls also contain a grinding aid for cooler operating temperatures, which has been shown to reduce the risk of thermal discoloration and warping of the final part.

For carbon and some stainless steel applications, zirconia is a popular grit choice for improved speed and durability. Zirconia beads offer some of the fastest removal rates of any material and are also designed for soft pressure cold cutting. Zirconia beads are also heat resistant and maintain sharpness better than aluminum beads.

As one of the first grits to be used when lidded plates entered the market, aluminum oxide was the least expensive grit. It is ideal for small jobs involving soft metals, non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, copper, zinc, etc.), as well as composites and wood.

  1. Disc grit and size

The abrasive grain size is the abrasiveness of the material and what the user chooses depends on the application.

Gravel sizes vary from coarse to medium to finer. A higher grit count indicates smaller abrasive particles and therefore a better abrasive product. Using a disc with a coarser grit is ideal for grinding or heavy stock removal applications. In contrast, users should choose a cover disc with a medium or finer grit for mixing, crumbling and finishing applications.

Disc sizes range from 2 inch to 7 inch depending on the application. Smaller flip discs in the 2 to 3 inch range will perform better than standard quick change discs, allowing access to restricted areas, and the design will help prevent the disc from “walking” on the unit. .
