The terminal block isA variety of connection componentsfor connecting parts of electronic circuits in industrial applications. They consist of conductive assemblies with protective sleeves for the wires – all enclosed in a strong plastic case. Some terminal blocks have pads or contact pins to connect to the PCB, but most are designed with their own housings for screwing into the chassis, mounting to the sides of industrial electrical components, mounting rack systems and industrial rails or mounted on the inside wall of the control panel box. On this DIN rail are mounted terminal blocks and relays (in a blue housing) based on electromechanical operation.

Assembled Terminal Blocks are best suited for semi-permanent and permanent signal and power connections…capable of accommodating wire and cable sizes ranging from the exquisite American gauge 16 wire (awg) to a reasonable equivalent of -7.5 awg – a powerful million round of 600 kcmil or MCM. Almost all terminal block designs offer secure wiring as well as easy wire removal – to allow inspection, repair and replacement of wires and accessories.

General purpose terminal blocks (sometimes simply referred to as electrical blocks or wire terminals) are widely used in a multitude of applications as electrical connection termination points. More specialized terminal blocks include:

• Terminal block for I/O signal transmission.
• Terminal block for power distribution
• Terminal block for motor connection – includes single and three phase motors for various industrial uses
• Terminal blocks serving asblock of earth- specially designed for earth connection)
• Terminal blocks serve as fuse blocks – where two conductors connect to a fuse to protect the circuit.

Unlike other connector options such as DIN cable connectors, pins, D-sub connectors, and industrial plug connectors, a terminal block typically only makes a single wire (single-pole) connection with the electronic circuits at handy. That said, terminal blocks come in multi-row banks for wiring arrays of wires to the circuit as needed.

Consider the special case of interface blocks. Also calledterminal interface, they can be defined by including two types of connectors… one usually taking the form of a very long array of sockets to accept discrete discrete wires. In effect, the interface block’s job is to connect a network of wires from the power component to the pre-made cable (carrying a special connector) from the controller or other low-signal component. For example, a common interface might accept a 37-pin D-sub plug and connect it to a 38-position terminal block that holds the wires to their terminals with plug-in contacts. A wide variety of terminal block interfaces are available for connecting various DIN headers as well as flat ribbon headers, IDC connections and other industry standard cable terminations. Some models have safety features, including a stubby front cord grip that secures the conductive elements to the plastic housing. Other models feature a stepped (tiered) design to save space and give you easy access to all cord outlets even if part of the block is already wired.

When choosing a terminal block, the current rating is paramount. Excessive current through the terminal block can cause overheating and damage. Voltage is usually less of an issue, but remains a key terminal block parameter: excessive voltage (rarely) can cause dielectric breakdown and current leakage between adjacent units. The declared values ​​of leakage (between terminals) and clearance (air passage distance) of the terminal block also affect the voltage rating.

The sockets on the terminal blocks should be large enough to accommodate the design wiring. The type of wire (single or stranded) determines which terminal type is best suited: solid (single-conductor) wire is usually stiff enough to push the spring mechanism inside the push-in terminals to the side, while stranded wires wire is generally used with screw terminals on terminal blocks.

The wire contact elements inside the terminal blocks are usually copper alloys with the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the conductors they contain. This avoids the problems associated with different expansion rates as well as those associated with electrolytic reactions when different metals come into contact. In the case of terminal blocks that can accept the insertion of single and stranded conductors, some manufacturers manufacture contact elements from beryllium copper wire.

Terminal block withscrew terminalUse screws to secure cables and wires in place. Usually found on blocks that handle moderate voltage and current, these require a technician to plug the cord into an open outlet, then use a screwdriver to tighten a small plate on the wire to hold it in place quickly. Larger terminal blocks may insert cast metal socket liners to make wire contact more reliable. Subtypes of screw connectors are strap clamp contacts (using wire clamp screws and strap assemblies) and tubular contacts. The latter uses a rectangular metal tube with through screws at each end. This is called a tubular screw contact when the flat bottom of the screw holds the plug in place. It’s called a tubular clamp contact when a pressure plate is flat on a wire clamp screw…it’s a useful setup for small braids.

Terminal block withquick connect contactsUses a simple female tab coupling which accepts the insertion of flat male blades which are soldered to the end of the wire to be connected. This friction-based coupling is popular for fine wire applications and those requiring frequent maintenance or reconfiguration.

Terminal block withto pushWherecorresponding push contacts(sometimes called spring contacts) have receptacles that open to accept manual insertion of wires and cables. A flat spring mechanism mounted at the base of each socket then bites into the cable and holds it by mechanical wedge action against the inside wall of the socket. These designs include push rods called release plungers (using a flathead screwdriver or more specialized polishing tool) to temporarily retain the spring-loaded mechanism should the load wire in the terminal block need to be removed for any reason. In some cases, these pushers are brightly colored – for easy identification and for the technician to easily see where to apply the screwdriver.

Pluggable contacts are becoming more common on DIN rail mounted terminal blocks as they avoid the hassle of screw tightening and generally speed up the wiring of the terminal blocks.

Closely related to push-in contacts isvoltage clamp contact. A spring mechanism holds the wires in their socket…but the difference is that the spring is shaped inside the socket. This means it requires the use of a release plunger (boring to use a flathead screwdriver) for both removals.and insertof yarn. Socket terminal blocks made to this design are useful when reliability is a primary design goal.

Sockets containing relays have a number of connector blades. These sets allow quick replacement of the relay in the event of failure.

Pluggable terminal blocksgot the wire and cable entry sockets as expected -as well as a male output to connect to a corresponding socket.These terminal blocks are indispensable for hot-swappable connections during inspection and maintenance.

In addition to selling components with these variants, terminal block manufacturers allow almost limitless customization. Some of the options include:

• Clear plastic housing and label kit options (especially for DIN rail mounted terminal blocks) to allow inspection, labeling and layout of wiring connections
• Switch or disconnect formats (as in knife disconnect terminal blocks) with a molded plastic throw that allows the operator to move the blade connector (embedded inside the block) in or out of the circuit – to disconnect the circuit quickly
• Additional LEDs and circuitry for visual notification of connection status
• Jumper straps to link adjacent contacts as well as fan strips to allow simultaneous connection of rows of wires
• Sockets on terminal blocks for fuses and disconnecting elements (especially for iron fuse boxes with different power ratings) for impulse suppression and voltage regulation
• Sockets for PCB insertion (to transmit advanced functions)

2) The Barrier terminal block is very similar to a Screw-in terminal block as they use screws to clamp the wires.

Depending on the application and environment, the Barrier terminal strip may have a small lid to protect the wiring.

3) Another common method for wire connection is the Spring-Loaded terminal block.

A connection is made by simply inserting the wires. Most of these terminal blocks require the wire to be attached to a ferrule before it is inserted.

The ferrule or wire is attached and released by inserting a spring release device. Some vendors have a unique spring release device while others require a small screwdriver.

4) The Push-fit or Push-in terminal block is becoming very popular.

Much like the Spring-Loaded terminal block, the “Push-fit” often requires the wire to be covered by a ferrule.

The big difference between the Spring-loaded and the Push-fit terminal block is the method of wire release. Push-fit terminal blocks have the release device mounted right next to the wire insertion point.

5) Another terminal block that was first used in the Telco industry is the Insulation Displacement Connector or IDC.

The wire insulation does not need to be removed before insertion. Two sharp blades inside the terminal block will slice through the insulation and make contact with the wire.

6) As the name suggests, a Pluggable terminal block has a plug outlet to allow connection to a socket.

The wire is inserted and clamped with a screw. Connection to the wire is made via a plug and socket configuration. This terminal block is used in situations where a quick disconnect is required.

7) On Tab Connector terminal blocks a wire attached to a connector is pushed onto a tab.

The wire can be crimp-connected or soldered depending upon the type of connector.

Tab Connector terminal blocks are also available where one side of the terminal block is a tab connection and the other side of the terminal block is a screw clamp connection.

Let’s have a look at some of the different terminal block types.

1) At first glance, a Ground terminal block looks like a typical Screw-in terminal block.

Instead of connecting wires, the Ground terminal block connects the incoming wire to Ground.

The wire is terminated by the panel or the DIN Rail or wherever the block is mounted…We will talk more about DIN rails later.

2) Fused Connection terminal blocks have a fuse inserted in series between the wire-in and the wire-out eliminating the need for external overcurrent protection.

To aid in troubleshooting, many vendors have included a built-in Fuse Failure LED circuit to provide a visual indication of the fuse condition.

3) A Thermocouple block is designed to accept thermocouple lead connections.

To save space, individual terminal blocks can be connected to form groups or clusters and are generally structured in multi-level configurations.
