Multi-read content how to tie shoes for ankle support

If your feet hurt, you’re probably lacing the wrong shoes. Try these edging techniques. Added by Ashley Chizek. Posted on September 26, 2019

When buying new walking or running shoes, there are many factors to consider: foot type, type of activity, distance traveled, and environment.

Most shoes have laces in the front butDid you know that there are different lacing techniques that can make your shoes more comfortable and can be customized to your feet?

Below are common shoe or foot problems and lacing techniques to solve them. Here at the clinic, we often refer to the description below written byDick’s Sportswear. They also have a handy printable flyer that you canDownload here >>

RELEASE:HIGH QUALITY ART

The high arch can help reduce tightness and add comfort to your shoe by opening up the midsection of the lace pattern.

Not:

  • Thread the crossed laces into the shoe through the first eyelet.
  • Thread the laces on the sides.
  • Tie the shoelace through the next two or more eyelets as usual.

Effect: The midsection will reduce tightness and create more comfort when fitted.

How to tie your shoe if you have high arches

RELEASE:NARROW FEET

Skipping the eyelet and using criss-cross straps can make your running shoes feel tighter.

Not:

  • Start by lacing the shoes.
  • Skip an eyelet and thread the laces in a criss-cross pattern.
  • Lace with usual criss-crossing and lacing.

Effect: Stretches the shoe more than conventional techniques.

RELEASE:THE SHOES FEEL SO GOOD

Are your running shoes feeling too tight? This method distributes the laces evenly for less pressure and more comfort.

Not:

  • Lace laces in a standard parallel pattern with no cross seams.
  • Thread the laces by threading the lace under the other eyelet.
  • Tie your shoelaces as usual.

Effect: The laces will be distributed evenly for more comfort.

Shoes Feel Too Tight

RELEASE:HIGH MIDFOOT

By omitting one or two laces, you can create more space for the midfoot.

Not:

  • Thread crossed laces on the collar of the shoe.
  • Thread the laces only on the sides around the foot.
  • Once the discomfort is gone, start tying the cross again.

Effect: The pressure is minimized on the side.

RELEASE:HEEL SLIP

This lacing technique can provide better ankle support and ensure your shoes aren’t too tight.

Not:

  • Lace the shoe as usual until the penultimate.
  • Go straight to the last hole without criss-crossing the ropes.
  • Thread the shoelace through the loop on the other side.
  • Tie your shoelaces as usual.

The effect: The ankle supports better, but the whole shoe is not too tight.

how to tie your shoes to keep your heels from slipping

RELEASE:FEEL WIDE IN GENERAL

This style of lacing can help loosen the entire shoe to create more room and comfort for your foot.

Not:

  • Thread crossed laces on the collar of the shoe.
  • Thread the laces crosswise through each of the other eyelets.
  • Tie your shoelaces as usual.

Effect: Loosens the whole shoe and gives more space to the foot.

How to tie your shoes if you have wide feet.

RELEASE:BLACK TOENAIL AND TOE PAIN

This style of lacing can help lift the toe of your shoe to give your toes more room.

Not:

  • Lace up the shoelace from the big toe to the top eyelet on the opposite side.
  • Thread the other side of the shoelace through each bottom diagonally and up parallel to each hole.
  • Tie your shoelaces as usual.

Effect: The tip of the shoe will be raised, which means more room for the toes. NOTE: This can be difficult to configure. The lace isn’t centered evenly when you start, and you don’t know if you’ve pulled it too wide one width or another until it’s all knotted.

how to tie your shoes to avoid toe pain

RELEASE:WIDELY

The wide forefoot lacing can create more room for the forefoot and in the toe area of your running shoe.

Not:

  • Start by putting on the laces on the sides.
  • From the toe of the middle foot upwards, start tying the cross.
  • Tie your shoelaces as usual.

Effect: The forefoot has more room in the toe area.

how to tie your shoe if you have a wide forefoot

It sounds trivial, but you can feel the difference immediately when you try these different lacing techniques. Try them out and let us know if they solve your own foot problems.

Not sure which method is best for you? Stop by the clinic and I’d like to talk to you about foot pain and lacing techniques (I’ll even tie your shoelaces!).
