There are two best options for protecting fabric seats. The first option is to buy a car seat cover and the second is to apply a fabric protector to the seats. However, the last resort is to combine the two if possible.

Deep cleaning of the seats (See instructions here)often expensive and labor intensive. You will have less need to clean your chair with a wringer by following the steps below.

With the methods I’m going to show you, I’m sure you’ll be satisfied and your car seats will be protected from spills, dirt, and other impurities.

 • 1. Car Seat Covers – Long Lasting Option
 • 2. Apply fabric protector to OEM car seat
 • PRO TIP: Combine seat covers and fabric protectors if possible
 • Frequently asked questions about car seat protection

If you want long-term protection for your car seats in your workshop, the best thing is to buy car seat covers. This is a more expensive option but definitely worth it.

I wrote an article6 Top Reasons to Buy Car Seat Covers, so be sure to check it out and find out all the benefits they offer.

If you are in a hurry, I will summarize this article for you. So here are the most important advantages of seat covers:

 • They protect the fabric and leather seats
 • Lots of styles to choose from
 • Many materials to choose from
 • You can cover damaged car seats with them
 • Easier to wash and maintain
 • You can easily replace them with new ones when they wear out

Another great thing about seat covers is that you can buy them for as low as $20. However, I do not recommend doing so. Cheap seat covers are no good at all. Believe me. I have already tried it.

If you want to buy car seat covers, my advice would be to invest a little more upfront. You will be happier later.

Your best bet is to buy fully custom seat covers for your vehicle. This way they will fit your car perfectly and will definitely last longer. It is the most expensive, but the best option. So if you have a budget, go for it.

9 Reasons Auto Detailing Is Good For Your Car

2. Apply fabric protector to OEM car seat

The second best way to protect your car seats is to apply a fabric protector to them. It is also the cheapest way and really very good.

I know a lot of people don’t want to buy car seat covers because of the price and because they like the look of the car seats on their car. It is quite reasonable.

The fabric protector forms a hydrophobic layer on top of the fabric, preventing liquid from seeping into the seat and preventing stains from sticking to the fabric.

There are two best fabric protectors that I can recommend:

 1. 303 Protective Cloth (Check Price on Amazon)
 2. Scotchguard fabric protector (check price on Amazon)

There are more options, but these two products have proven effective.

The simpler the registration process, the better. Here it is :

 • Thoroughly clean your chair
 • Spray a light protective coat on your seat
 • Do not abuse the product
 • Once dry, you’re done.

PRO TIP: Combine seat covers and fabric protectors if possible

Here is another variation of protecting your original car seat and it is by combining the two methods I mentioned above.

Most seat covers are made from fabric/cloth which means they will leak onto your original car seat. You want to prevent this from happening.

By combining car seat covers with fabric protectors, you get the ultimate protection for your OEM car seats. The seat cover will become hydrophobic and you will prevent the original chair from aging.

Of course, this is not always possible. For example, if you buy leather seat covers, you don’t need to apply a fabric protector because leather is inherently hydrophobic and easy to clean.

Three quick steps for this method:

 1. Clean original car seats
 2. Paste the chair
 3. Apply fabric protector

After performing all three steps, you are done and your car seat is also fully protected against damage, dirt, spills and aging.

Fabric Guard Interior Protector Shield

Creates an invisible shield to repel oil, water, and stains

Works as an odor shield against unpleasant odors

A single application can last 8-12 months

Blocks against harmful UV rays that rapidly deteriorate fabrics

Great for automotive interior, convertible tops, and most fabrics

Also available in 1 gallon size

How it Works

Chemical Guys Fabric-Guard is a professional grade carpet and upholstery sealant that works like a shield to protect fabric surfaces against liquids, moisture, contamination and stains. Fabric-Guard is also equipped with an odor guard to help fight odors caused by everyday use or any other foul activities. When spills occur on interior surfaces the fabric sealant capabilities of Fabric-Guard aid in preventing the fiber from becoming saturated, allowing the automobile owner ample time to get the spot out before it stains. With the correct application of Fabric-Guard it will enhance the look of all fabrics and extend the durability and life of all surfaces it is sprayed on.

For Convertible Tops

Generally the first part of the automobile that deteriorates is the convertible top. Fabric Guard prevents moisture in the air from infiltrating convertible top fibers preventing rapid deterioration. With the use of Fabric Guard it allows dirt, dust and grime to easily be washed off of the convertible top surface.
