Advantages and disadvantages of baking soda clay

Advantage:I love the simplicity of the 3 ingredient baking soda clay! It dries beautifully with a white clay texture and looks great painted over with watercolors or other paints and markers. (Instructions coming soon!)

wrap baking soda and cornstarch clay

Fault:it is more fragile and not suitable for detailed designs such as glue and cornstarch clay. Clay can crack if it dries too quickly. It is best to slowly dry off from the sun and warm up for the first 24 hours.

Other things to consider: As an air-drying clay, it is not as durable as colloidal clay. However, it will get quite hard if you bake it at 170-200 degrees F for about 30 minutes, after it dries at room temperature for 1-2 days (to prevent cracking).

Advantages and disadvantages of colloidal clay and cornmeal

Advantage:This homemade clay is unbeatable! It’s like playing dough and soft porcelain clay. Because it’s more flexible and stretchy, you can roll the clay finer and create more intricate details like small house decorations with small windows.

How to make salt dough or air dry clay ornaments & lighted star Christmas garland

It won’t crack and is quite strong and durable after being air dried for about 5 days. Firing does not improve the durability of this clay.

Fault:Requires more ingredients to make. As it dries it shrinks a little, especially around the edges, and becomes more ivory than pure white.

Other things to consider:The image below shows the difference between the two clays after they have dried. You can see the baking soda clay pieces on the left are more milky white.

If you like the pure white look of baking soda clay, you can add a dollop of white acrylic or craft paint after the clay has baked and kneaded into a paste.

Air dry clay is a fun and easy craft to make at home but there are a lot of recipes out there. In this video, I mix and test out three recipes. I am a ceramics teacher and all of my students are currently E – Learning at home due to virus social distancing measures. You can imagine how hard it is to teach clay to students online, so I made this DIY video to give my students some sort of clay alternative. Again, this is air dry clay. These are all no cook, no bake recipes.

I’ve always wanted to try out DIY clay recipes and figured now seems like the best, or rather sadly fitting, time. Ordering clay online is very difficult now and also raises the question of whether it’s worth putting delivery people at risk for non-essential items. Just like the last video, I limited myself to things I can get myself from the supermarket or drugstore. I actually found white PVA glue at my local grocery shop, which I never noticed in all the years I’ve been going there! So keep your eyes open and you’d be surprised at what semi-essential things are still being sold.

♥ BAKING SODA CLAY ♥

2 Cups Baking Soda

1 Cup Cornstarch

1 1/4 Cups Water

This was a great recipe that I never knew existed! It was easy to make and easy to clean up. The clay does dry out quickly so it should ideally be used immediately after making. You can halve the recipe above if you don’t need that much.

♥ SLIME CLAY ♥

PVA Glue

Baking Soda

Contact Lens Solution

Cornstarch

Sorry for the lack of quantities as this was an experimental recipe I stumbled upon in a previous video. The stretchiness of slime actually makes a very good base for clay because it creates the same type of elasticity for sculpting. The hardest part was getting the mixture to stay firm without spreading. I alternated between add cornstarch and activator until it had a clay-like consistency.

♥ COLD PORCELAIN ♥

1 Cup Cornstarch

1 Cup PVA Glue (white or clear)

1 Tbsp Lemon Juice (or Vinegar)

1 Tbsp Baby Oil (or Olive/Coconut Oil)

Cold porcelain is the most professional DIY clay recipe out there since the final result is better than many types of store-bought clay. Many experienced crafters sell pieces made from cold-porcelain which are beautiful and virtually identical to polymer clay. Some recipes mention 2 tbsp of lemon juice and baby oil so that’s entirely up to you. You will probably end up adding more oil or cornstarch in the kneading stage anyway. If this is your first time making cold porcelain then BUY MORE ingredients than you think you need! Just in case one batch goes wrong at least you have enough to try again (and don’t have to leave the house again for obvious reasons).

MICROWAVE TIPS: Microwave for 15 seconds and stir well in between. Repeat until the mixture starts to clump together and look a bit like cottage cheese. It should feel less sticky and pull away from the side of the bowl. Be careful not to overheat as the clay is harder to fix.

♥ GLAZE ♥

All of these clays can be glazed with clear nail polish or a thin layer of PVA glue. White glue is totally fine as that dries transparent and shiny. However please wait until the clay is 100% dry before glazing or it may crack.

♥ CLEANING TIPS ♥

Baking Soda and Slime Clay were easy to clean, either with soap and water or in the dishwasher. Cold Porcelain was a real pain in the ass because solidified PVA is basically plastic and can easily block your pipes if washed down the drain.

– When my first attempt got stuck to the pot I soaked everything in water for a few hours. The PVA dried in one layer and I was able to peel it away in large chunks and throw into the bin.

– Non-stick pans are easy to clean, the residual clay can be wiped off. Stirring the clay requires much more force than cooking so be sure not to use anything that could damage the Teflon.

– When the clay got stuck to kitchen counter I sprinkled plenty of baking soda on top and doused it in vinegar. This dissolved the mixture and I could scrub it away.

– Nail polish remover also works for dried PVA glue. However this can damage painted surfaces so do a spot test first.
