4. Vinegar

The acetic acid in 5% vinegar is a desiccant that sucks the life out of the leaves. It is most destructive to young plants with immature roots, although it only defoliates weeds with waxy leaves, such as gotu kola or thistle.

Be sure to cover unwanted items before spraying, as vinegar is an equal-opportunity killer. Keep your sprayer on target by unscrewing the bottom of a 2 liter plastic soda bottle and placing it on top of the grass. Spray the vinegar on the neck of the bottle so the vinegar doesn’t splash on your vegetables.

5. Vodka

It’s not known if vodka kills weeds, but 1 ounce mixed with 2 cups of water and a few drops of dish soap will dry out live weeds in the sun. Does not do well on shade-loving weeds. Protect the undesirables, because vodka also dries them out.

6. Soap

The oils in soap can break down waxy or hairy grass surfaces, leaving them vulnerable to drying effects. So, add a few drops of liquid dish detergent to a spray bottle of vinegar or vodka to keep the solution on the leaves. The soap also makes the sheets shiny, helping you keep track of what you’ve sprayed.

7. Boiling water

After making yourself a cup of tea, take out the pot and pour boiling water over the weeds, they will catch fire. It’s a particularly effective way to remove weeds from driveways and sidewalks because boiling water can run off impermeable surfaces and cool before it reaches border plants.

How to kill weeds in your lawn without killing the grass is a question commonly asked by lawn care enthusiasts. Weed control can be a full time job and really takes the fun out of your lawn care program. The weed control that I like best doesn’t involve a weed spray or chemical like spectracide, roundup or image weed killer. The best long term weed control is to grow a healthy lawn and mow it regularly at the correct height for your grass type. This creates a natural weed control because the tight turf creates a situation where weeds have trouble competing with the lawn for the resources they need to grow.

The best way to immediately get rid of weeds without killing the grass in your lawn is to simply pull the weeds manually. That said, chemicals can help initially kill broadleaf weeds and other lawn problems like crabgrass.

Options for chemical weed control fall into 2 categories for application; liquid or granular. Both types of weed control products have their pros and cons. Liquid weed control products like Image weed killer or roundup work very quickly to kill weeds. The downside is that they are also much more likely to damage or even kill the grass which is what we don’t want. I wouldn’t use roundup on weeds within your lawn because it’s a very powerful herbicide which WILL damage any grass near the weed being sprayed. Keep roundup for ornamental beds weeds growing in places like your sidewalk. Image weed killer works great for tough weeds like nutsedge but even it is hard on the nearby grass.

Granular products like Spectracide weed control work slower than the liquid versions but it is also much safer for the lawn. When it comes to herbicides you want to use as little as necessary to kill the weeds and nothing else. Granular weed control like Spectracide also contains Dithiopyr which is a pre-emergent to prevent new weeds from growing back once they’re gone. Remember all we’re using Spectracide for is to buy us time to grow a healthy lawn.
