Multi-read content how to fix a leaking faucet handle

Follow these basics for all faucet repairs

Before you begin, recheck the drip faucet to determine where the water is coming from. Leaks around the base of the faucet require a different repair than leaking from the end of the faucet.

Then turn off the water supply from the drip tap. You will probably find a shut-off valve under the sink. If these valves don’t work, or if you don’t, you’ll need to turn off your entire home’s main water valve. After turning off the water, open the faucet to the middle position to reduce the water pressure and make sure the water is turned off. Finally, cover the sink’s drain holes with a strainer basket or rag to avoid losing small parts down the drain.

Pay attention to the order and orientation of the parts when disassembling them. A digital camera or camcorder is handy to record each step in case you forget. For ease of reassembly, set the parts aside in the order they were removed. Once all the components are out, check the inside of the valve for damaged seals or mineral deposits. Use a cloth or fine nylon sandpaper to clean the surface. Loosen mineral deposits by soaking them in vinegar.

Slow water flow can be caused by holes in the faucet body. Use a screwdriver or a small knife to clean them. Before replacing worn parts and reassembling the faucet, place a rag over the dripper and gently open the shutoff valve to remove any debris that may have come loose during cleaning and inspection.

After reassembling the faucet, open the faucet to the middle position and gradually open the shut-off valves to turn on the water. Leave the faucet open until the water flows freely and all the air is out of the hose. If the water flow through the faucet is slow, the aerator may be plugged. Remove the aerator and clean it.

Bring the old parts to the store to find replacement parts

You will often see the brand name stamped on the faucet. And this information will come in handy when you need to find spare parts. But in most cases, the safest way is to return the worn parts to the store.

If you have a Delta faucet or other rotary ball faucet, you’re in luck because you’ll find repair kits at most hardware stores and home centers. Toner cartridges and repair kits for Moen “cartridge” type faucets are also available. But if you have a different brand or disc type faucet, you may need to order parts, as there are too many variations for most stores to stock. It helps you know the faucet name or model number when looking for a replacement cartridge. If not, take the toner cartridge to the store so they can match it to the parts catalog photo.

Plumbing supply specialists are also a good source of replacement parts. If you are having trouble locating parts, call your faucet manufacturer for assistance.
