Today I’m going to share my easy “glue like a pro” process to get super smooth walls with minimal fuss. You can use this process to smooth out a textured wall, fray tape seams behind new drywall, or repair a wall damaged by tearing wallpaper.

If you’ve ever tried covering or layering a general compound, you probably know that it takes a bit of dexterity and it can be really frustrating to get that super smooth finish. After testing a few procedures, this is the method I have tried and true that I have used many times with great results!

STEP 1: // Gather the right materials.

  • magic flight
  • (MUST HAVE for this process)
  • 2nd option to fly
  • (I haven’t used it but it looks like it)
  • common compound
  • paint roller
  • heavy bristle paint roller
  • water sprayer
  • Wet towel
  • drill
  • mixer accessory
  • where
  • the smallest
  • .

STEP 2: // Mix the compound

If you’re doing a large wall, you’ll want to buy a large size joint compound because you’ll get through it quickly. The 4.5 gallon size will run you around $10-$12. For reference, I’m going to use 2 large tubs for an average sized room. The mixture coming out of the bath will have the consistency of thick peanut butter. You’ll want to add a small amount of water and mix using a drill and attachment until you’re the consistency of heavy pancake batter…or whipped cream.

Note: DO NOT USE old joint compound…use only new, unopened joint compound. Even a little dry compound in the tub will ruin your results. Trust me.

STEP 3: // APPLY THE MIXTURE TO THE WALL

Using a thick roller (3/4″), apply the mixture to the wall in a thick layer. Make sure the layer is thick enough so you can’t see the wall. You want to make sure you have a consistent enough overlay to fill in any texture.

Note: If you have large protrusions or areas that are much higher than the wall, it’s best to get a 5 inch putty knife and scrape the wall before you start. Then be sure to wipe down the wall to start with a clean, dust-free wall. I don’t have a picture of this because I don’t need it, but your wall might need it.

Here is a close-up of what the layer of the corresponding compound should look like (left). You will want to do this in 2-3 minute increments as the compound will begin to dry out quickly. If the edges dry too quickly (they tend to be thinner), take your spray bottle and spray the edges lightly before using a trowel.

STEP 4: // JUMP ZONE WITH THE MAGIC TROWEL

This is where the magic happens! Magic plane basically does all the work for you. Starting at the top of the section, gently pull downward to smooth the mixture against the wall. The compound will magically fill in the gaps and give you a fairly even surface. Overlap the next section 3 to 4 inches until you have smoothed the entire section you are working on. Don’t worry about it being perfect. You can fix uneven lines or dots after it dries. Also be sure to wipe down the flywheel before each pass. This will help keep the result clean and smooth.

If the texture is too heavy, you may need to let the first coat dry and repeat the process. You’ll know pretty soon after you start if this applies to you.

Notice the small slip marks in the image below. These are small pieces of drywall compound. This is what you do NOT want. I’ve worked with it and got the desired result, but it’s much easier if you don’t run into this problem yourself.

STEP 5: // Smooth the sand

You will want to let the compound dry completely. It can dry in as little as 4 hours, but I like to let it dry overnight. If you’ve ever cleaned drywall, you know it’s NOT FUN. Drywall ceiling dust is very dirty, dusty, messy and will literally cover your entire home in a thin layer of snow that will only last for a few minutes. If you’re willing to put a little extra grease on your elbows, I recommend trying smoothing out any imperfections with a damp sponge. I used a tile sponge that is only slightly damp (you can’t squeeze water out of it) and “sanded” the wall. If you really remove the bonding compound, it’s too wet. The result is just enough to smooth out rough edges and give you a nice smooth wall… without dust! Notice the trail in the middle of the photo below. This is the area that I smoothed with a sponge. Miracle.

After smoothing your entire wall, be sure to use a good primer before painting or wallpapering. As a general rule, general compound should always be coated with a primer before painting. Good surfing!

If you’d like to see video versions of all of these steps, I’ve saved the markup abovePageInstagramcalled “Skim coating”. You can find that and many other cool tutorials there!

Popular questions about how to thin joint compound for skim coat

How do you thin out joint compound for a skim coat?

Can joint compound be used as a skim coat?

Using joint compound for skim coating is simple as the joint compound provides high quality, quick-drying, durable results that can be sanded easily without striping or tackiness. This joint compound will produce a smooth finish that is ready for final coats in one to two hours.

Can you thin joint compound?

If you only need a small amount of thinned mud for a minor repair, mix water into a cup of drywall 1 tablespoon at a time with a putty knife until you get the desired consistency. Store leftover mud in the bucket for up to two weeks.

How do you thin down all purpose joint compound?

How do you make a skim coat mixture?

Which compound is best for skim coating?

What product do you use to skim coat a wall?

Use a light-body drywall compound. Since the compound serves almost no structural purpose, heavy body compound is not necessary. Plus, lightweight mud is easier to sand smooth. Mix the drywall compound according to the mix ratio on the product instructions.

Is there a difference between joint compound and drywall compound?

What is Joint Compound? Joint compound is also known as drywall mud or just mud. It’s comprised mainly of gypsum and limestone, but it also has other materials such as clay, mica, perlite, and starch. Joint compound has a spreadable consistency similar to mud, which is how it got its common name.

Can you skim coat with easy sand?

If you’re talking about skimming an ugly old wall to make it smooth, Easy Sand is fine, maybe even ideal. Just remember that old walls will have multiple layers of paint that could be peeling or delaminating below the surface. As long the old surface is stable, go for it.

How do you smooth joint compound without sanding?

You can finish the drywall without having to sand the surface. By using a rubber float or a knife, you can smooth the wall down so it looks like you spent the day sanding. It takes time to do the job properly.

How do I get a smooth finish with joint compound?

How thick should skim coat mud be?

STEP 2: // Mix Compound & Water

Joint compound out of the tub will be the consistency of thick peanut butter. You will want to add small amount of water and mix using a drill and attachment until you reach the consistency of thick pancake batter… or whip cream.

What happens if drywall mud is too thick?

If you mud the drywall using way too much of the joint compound, it may result in a most common problem that most home renovators face. It is that you are going to have cracks on your drywall. It usually happens if the joint compound is applied in a too thick layer, or if it was applied too quickly.

Can I add water to joint compound?

Do I need to add water when mixing Sheetrock® Brand UltraLightweight All Purpose Joint Compound? No, Sheetrock® Brand UltraLightweight All Purpose Joint Compound is formulated as a ready-to-use product. Simply mix and use. If adding water, use sparingly and test apply.

Why is my skim coat bubbling?

Bubbling (or sometimes called “blistering”) happens when the paper layers in the drywall become separated. While it may not seem like it’s loose, you may find out differently once you slap your first layer of joint compound on the wall.

how to skim coat a wall in less then 10 minutes Diy Drywall Tips and Tricks to get a smooth finish. Skimming a wall is also great for repairing after removing wallpaper and any other type of cosmetic wall imperfections. In this video I’ll be skim coating new drywall.

I’m on a remodeling project where I’ve installed some new drywall and did the drywall finishing now we’re ready to skim coat for a nice smooth finish. So I figured why not get the skim coating process on video and share it with everyone here Youtube.

I’ll be using a 12 inch drywall taping knife, mud pan, and some all-purpose joint compound then down to a yogurt consistency.

Next I simply apply the joint compound to the wall being careful not to put too much mud on the taping knife. Then, I come back with my drywall taping knife and smooth out the area where I just laid out the joint compound.

After this first coat dries I will scrape an ridges or high spots before apply a touch up coat. Lastly the wall was lightly sanded with a 100 grit sanding sponge.
