Check if the Wires are Live

Before testing the voltage, check that the cables are still live. Use onevoltage tester. A non-contact voltage tester is ideal, especially for conductors hidden behind insulation or sockets.

If the wires are exposed or you can reach the metal terminals, you can use a contact voltage tester.

Voltage testers do not tell you the exact amount of voltage. It simply measures if there is voltage by the lighting. Some voltage testers also make a buzzing or clicking sound.

If the wire is live, you can now use a multimeter to measure the voltage.

Meter Setup

Before you can usedigital multimeter, you need to configure it correctly.

Turn the dial to the part of the scale marked V with the alternating current symbol (~) next to it. In this section, some numbers indicate the voltage range.

Set the dial to the lowest number above the expected tension in the wire. In the UK it is 230V. Set the multimeter to the next number above 230V.

Selecting the correct voltage range improves measurement resolution and accuracy.

Not all multimeters require this step. If your multimeter does not have a number on the scale, it is probably an autoranging multimeter. All you have to do is set the dial to V~ and the multimeter will set the correct range when measuring voltage.

Next, connect the probes to the multimeter. The black probe goes into the slot marked COM while the red probe goes into the slot marked VΩ.

1. For a catch

If live cables are connected to the outlet, you can easily check the voltage.

Insert one of the wires into the left neutral slot of the outlet and the other into the right channel directly. Check the reading on the multimeter.

If all is well, the cables should carry a voltage of 230 V, although it may be slightly higher or lower.

You can also check the neutral wire voltage with a multimeter. Plug one of the multimeter leads into the ground/earth terminal (the hole at the top) and the other into the left connector.

Check the multimeter to read the voltage. If the plug is wired correctly, it will read zero or near zero. If it is a large number, there is a wiring problem.

If it is 230V or close, the wiringcan be reversed.

2. For a switch

If the cable leads directly to a switch, remove the switch to access the contact terminals

Make sure the switch is on, touch one of the multimeter leads to the ground wire or terminal and the other to one of the live wires. Check the voltage reading.

While holding one wire to the ground terminal, touch the second wire to the connector or another live wire.

Similar to a power outlet, the direct wires from the switch should read 230V or there.

3. For exposed wires

You can also measure the voltage of live conductors that are exposed. Just be very careful.

To measure the potential difference of each lead, touch one of the multimeter leads to any nearby metal object. It can be a radiator or a metal pipe. This object will serve as a ground reference.

Then touch the other lead of the multimeter to each contact lead and check the voltage of each.

For most 3-wire household circuits, only one wire should register a voltage of about 230V. This is the live wire.

The neutral wire and the ground wire should show zero or near zero voltage.

If you don’t have a metal object nearby to use as a ground reference, you can measure the voltage difference between the conductors.

Measure the neutral wire and the live wire to get the potential difference of the live wire (use the sheath color to identify which wire is neutral, live, and ground). The ground and live measurement also gives you the tension of the live wire.

Measure ground and neutral to see if there is voltage in the neutral wire.
