Multi-read content how to repair a fiberglass shower pan

There are several options for repairing a cracked shower head. If you don’t know your options or don’t do your research, you’ll be throwing money into the water (no pun intended).
There are two important things you need to know first:

1. What caused the crack? (i.e. something heavy dropped/fallen? Is it due to regular use? Did they crack due to stress? etc.)

You will need to give this information to your tub repair professional. How it cracks can determine the best option for repairing the damaged surface.

2. Is the area around the crack curved? If you apply weight to the area, will it bend, tilt, or pop out?

No curves? SMART!! There is a very good chance that this crack can be repaired easily.

If this area bends under pressure, your shower tray does not have adequate support underneath. You’d be shocked at how many bathtubs, if not all, lack support because they were installed during construction. Now there is a chance that the shower pan could be salvaged (by adding support) if the flex area was about 1 foot in diameter. How is it done? The professional will drill a hole (maybe even several holes) in the unsupported area or cut out the open area, then apply high-density support foam. This support product will require a special order. Avoid using foam backing which you can find at a local general store. These products will not hold the applied weight for long. Then the holes/cutouts will be filled with waterproof putty and sandblasted. The entire area is then cleaned and prepared. The acrylic urethane color matches the existing tub tub color and is sprayed on as needed or the entire tub can be completely refinished; which is needed. TA-DA! (You may need to let the surface sit for 1-3 days depending on how long the high density foam cures.)

In our experience, if the flex area is larger than the foot, a tub replacement is often the best option. You can always TRY to have it professionally repaired, but it may just be a bandage on the broken leg. High density support foam won’t do much. The alternative may be your best/only option. Talk to an expert, get an expert opinion, but be careful. An honest tub repair professional will tell you this is a lifesaver worth pursuing. Don’t be taken advantage of. Do your research. Contact us if you have any questions.

The crack in this tub is due to standing weight. The lack of support underneath allows the tub to have people standing.IMG_0261
