Popular questions about how to insulate a ceiling

What is the best way to insulate a ceiling?

Can you insulate your ceiling?

By insulating your ceiling, you avoid heat losses and an unnecessarily high energy bill. Warm air rises, but by means of ceiling insulation you can keep the warmth inside and reduce sounds. It is an efficient and quite cheap way to improve the energy performance of your house.

How do you insulate a ceiling without removing it?

Injection foam insulation is the answer to insulating walls without removing drywall. There are several types of injection foam available out there, including the RetroFoam product we use. These materials don’t require the drywall in your home to be taken down.

Do I need to insulate ceiling?

In addition to walls and attics, insulation should be installed in ceilings with unheated spaces, basement walls, floors above vented crawl spaces, cathedral ceilings, floors over unheated garages or porches, knee walls, and in between interior walls—especially bathrooms—as well as ceilings and floors.

Can I insulate the underside of my roof?

Open-cell spray polyurethane foam or closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (ccSPF) insulation can be sprayed along the underside of the roof sheathing to provide a conditioned and insulated attic space that can be durable and efficient in all climate zones (see Figure 1).

Is it better to insulate attic ceiling or floor?

roof insulation is no-contest. The floor wins every time. Insulating the floor is standard practice for an unfinished attic space. The exception to this rule takes place when families opt to convert an unfinished attic space into something usable or livable.

How do you insulate open ceiling rafters?

Insulate the Roof Deck

Insulating the roof deck is by far the most popular choice for insulating exposed rafters. Usually, this involves installing 2″ thick rigid insulation such as extruded poly board before the roofing is installed during home construction.

Is it better to insulate ceiling or walls?

wall insulation, always go for the attic. The largest pay back will be seen here. You would stop heat loss from natural convection and block solar gain (an increase in heat) in the attic, which can result in energy savings of 30 to 50 percent. You won’t see as big of a return on investment by insulating walls.

How do you insulate a ceiling without drywall?

The best option is to install fiberglass batt insulation. If you use the faced variety, the facing provides an effective way to hold the insulation in place, and it creates a vapor barrier that keeps the insulation dry. You can also use unfaced batts, but you have to add a separate vapor barrier.

How do you insulate a room from the inside?

The best way to insulate your interior walls without removing drywall involves filling the interior walls with blow-in insulation. While blow-in insulation is typically used in attics, basements, and other crawl spaces, it works perfectly behind established walls to create a solid barrier for thermal insulation.

Do it yourself spray foam insulation?

How do you insulate a roof from the inside?

Is it OK to insulate roof rafters?

Insulating between rafters will do no good, because the attic should be ventilated, and the rafter insulation would be between two unheated spaces. You can add insulation to the floor; the more the merrier. Just don’t put it in the eaves. Also, make sure the attic is well ventilated.

How do you insulate a shed ceiling?

How do you insulate between rafters?

An alternative way to insulate your loft is to fit the insulation between and over the rafters – these are the sloping timbers that make up the roof itself. You can use rigid insulation boards, carefully cut to size, or you can have foam insulation sprayed between the rafters.

In this video I install a new insulated ceiling to the underside of the roof joists in my new garage workshop which has a pitched roof. Mainly doing this to block noise from a nearby road but the insulation will help both acoustically and thermally too. I will later create a loft space for additional storage.
