Last updated onSeptember 10, 2020

When summer comes, so do the flies. Whether you live in a big city, a suburban town, or a city, flies are everywhere. They fly and crawl on almost anything, especially feces, then land on stoves and food and contaminate them. Although the flies don’t seem dangerous, they spread many different infections. It’s time to learn how to get rid of flies in the house. There are many effective home remedies for flies. Read to find out!

Use a natural fly repellent

There are several things available in our homes that can be used to trap and kill house flies. Here are some effective home remedies for flies.

1. Hot pepper repellent

Hot peppers

To repel flies in and around your home, use hot peppers. They avoid flying around these plants or landing near foods containing hot peppers. The irritation was attributed to their inability to breathe whenever they smelled the chilli. Therefore, to repel them, plant a few chilli plants in the garden to repel them and prevent them from multiplying. You can also grow pepper on the balcony. Make an all-natural chilli fly repellent by following these steps:

  • Use 2 or 3 chiles depending on the strength you want and puree them in a food processor.
  • Add 3-4 cups of water and continue mixing to obtain a homogeneous mixture.
  • Cover this mixture in an airtight container and leave in the sun for about a week.
  • Strain the liquid and transfer it to a spray bottle.

2. Basil

Basil, a culinary herb, is mostly used in Italian dishes. Its scent can repel flies. Fruit flies and house flies are simply unbearable. To repel flies indoors, grow basil in the garden or on the balcony like chilli or with it if desired. You can also make an insect repellent spray with basil leaves. This is the way –

  • Pick up some basil leaves and squeeze a little to make cuts in the leaves.
  • Soak these leaves in hot water for about 30 minutes.
  • Strain the leaves and use the liquid as a spray.

3. Ginger spray

Ginger spray is an all natural and powerful fly repellent that is easy to make and works like a charm potion. Similar to hot peppers and basil leaves, the strong smell of ginger repels flies and keeps them away from your home. The mixture of ginger and water is also an effective insect repellent used on farms. The strong smell of ginger makes most flies unavoidable. To make ginger fly repellent, follow these steps:

  • Put 2 tablespoons of dried ginger powder in a bowl containing 4 cups of plain water.
  • Stir the mixture so that the ginger essence is mixed with the water.
  • Strain the mixture and transfer the liquid to a spray bottle.
  • Spray insect repellent wherever flies tend to congregate.

4. Essential oils

Essential oils

Many essential oils have a strong smell that repels flies. Spraying a mixture of these oils is a great way to keep flies away from your home. To prepare this spray, you will need strong-smelling oils like clove oil, thyme oil, peppermint oil, lemongrass oil, and cinnamon oil. The procedure is as follows:

  • Add 10 drops of each essential oil to a spray bottle.
  • Pour in 2 cups of water and 2 cups of unflavored vodka.
  • Mix the ingredients together, shaking vigorously.

5. Apple cider vinegar and eucalyptus oil

This insect repellent is particularly effective against house flies. You will need a quarter cup of witch hazel, a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar and about 60 drops of eucalyptus oil. Follow the following procedure:

  • Put the witch hazel and apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and shake well.
  • Now add eucalyptus oil to the mixture and shake well to prepare the mosquito repellent spray.
  • This mixture can also be applied to the skin to repel house flies.

Use traps to get rid of flies

If organic sprays can’t make them work, it’s time to raise the bar. Fly traps are effective in trapping and killing flies that have entered your home.

1. Fruit fly trap

Vinegar fly trap

An effective way to keep fruit flies away from your home is to use a vinegar trap. Fruit flies are mainly attracted to rotting or fermented fruit. Thus, fermented fruit products like apple cider vinegar and wine are excellent baits for attracting flies. A simple trap with a fermented liquid can be made to keep fruit flies away from the house.

  • Pour apple cider vinegar into a glass and cover with a sheet of clear plastic. Use a rubber band to secure the paper to the glass. Use a needle to make a hole large enough for the fruit fly to enter the glass. These holes will allow flies to get rid of the vinegar smell in the glass. Once inside, they won’t be able to get out of the hole. They will eventually drown.
  • Pour some vinegar into an open bowl and add a few drops of dish soap to it. The soap lowers the surface tension of the vinegar and when the flies try to land on the mixture, they sink and drown.

2. Commercial light trap

Light traps work by attracting flies and enticing them with an electric current. Commercially available light traps are quite effective in attracting all kinds of flies that roam your living space like house flies, wasps, mosquitoes, moths, etc. They attract insects with ultraviolet lights. The ideal way to set up your light trap is as follows:

  • Place your light trap about 4 to 6 feet off the ground.
  • Pick a location where the light trap can’t be seen outside through a window or door so it doesn’t attract flies from there.
  • Use light traps designed for homes, as larger high voltage traps can create a bit of a mess.

3. Leaflet trap

One of the simplest remedies for home kitchen flies is to use fly paper. The flycatchers marketed are sticky, scented tapes coated on both sides. This smell attracts flies and traps them in the glue when they land on the paper. Sometimes this sticky coating also contains an insecticide to kill flies. If you want to make your own fly trap, you will need strips of brown paper and corn syrup. Follow these instructions:

  • To make a paper fly trap, cut 2-inch-wide strips of brown paper.
  • Pour equal parts water and corn syrup into a saucepan and heat the mixture until it boils. Keep stirring continuously.
  • Let the mixture cool down a bit and soak the strips in the mixture for about 4-5 hours so that they penetrate evenly. Let it dry for 2-3 hours.
  • Hang fly strips in your kitchen or any other place in your home where you see flies in large numbers.

4. Electronic swatter

Electronic swatter

The Handheld Electronic Insect Scanner is a great tool to quickly get rid of flies in your home. Electronic rackets are like badminton rackets with three layers of electrified nets. The ON/OFF button controls the charging of the internal high voltage capacitors. To use, lift the pad and sweep it lightly in the air. The flies fly right into the middle of the net and are attacked by high voltage sparks, killing them instantly. Note: Try not to touch the net with your bare hands when the batter is running. This can give you a strong recoil.

5. Honey trap

Bilewater fly traps work well for small fruit flies and are simple to build. The principle is the same; Honeydew has a sweet aroma, the scent of which attracts birds to fly into the trap. To do this, you will need a large glass jar or mason jar and tissue paper.

  • Roll the tissue paper into a cone shape that fits snugly into the glass and cover with a little of the honey-water mixture.
  • Trim the end of the cone a little to create a small entrance for the flies to enter but not large enough for them to exit as well.
  • When flies are attracted to the honey and water mixture, they fly into the cone and become trapped in the glass with no way out.

How to clean the house to repel flies

To keep your home free of flies, it’s essential to make sure they aren’t attracted to your home in the first place. Here are some tips for keeping your home fly-free.

1. Clean up food spills immediately

Cleaning food spill

Flies are attracted to food, fruit, and anything else that looks attractive in your space. They are more attracted to moist or rancid foods. Therefore, whenever you spill food, clean it up immediately.

  • Store all wet foods in an airtight container and snacks or pet food in a Ziploc bag.
  • Wash dishes immediately after use to prevent them from sitting in the sink too long.

2. Keep the trash can clean

Garbage cans are a hot spot for flies in your home. Dispose of trash or compost in sealed bags and empty the bin regularly. Your waste disposal area should be well lit, preferably sunlight to prevent moisture and promote bacterial growth.

3. Clean up after your pets

If you keep a pet cat or dog at home, its nest can become a breeding ground for all kinds of flies if you don’t catch them early. Flies like to lay eggs on manure and can release dozens of eggs at a time. They can hatch within 24 hours and cause an infection. So please clean up after your pets.

4. Clear clogged drains

Clearing drain

Your drains attract flies because they are filled with decaying organic matter. Your kitchen and bathroom outlets should be cleaned once a week with a disinfectant-based drain cleaner to kill any indoor-breeding pests.

5. Block their entry point

Although flies can get inside every time you open the door, they often pass through window cracks, screen vents without you even knowing it. Regularly check these entry points and correct them.

Keeping your home fly-free is a never-ending process. Flies are always waiting for the opportunity to fly into our homes and breed. Your first line of defense should be prevention. Always keep your house and surroundings clean so that flies do not come near your house, and if they do, try the above measures to keep them away.

Watch how to get rid of house flies guaranteed! This video will show you steps for effective house fly control, using house fly traps and pesticides!

***

The house fly is one of the most hated and common pests in the world. They can be found in any location around the world, and will infest homes quickly if they detect any rotting or decaying organic matter.

Because house flies feed and breed in rotting material, they can spread harmful bacteria to people and animals, transporting pathogens everywhere they go, so it’s important to perform proper house fly control.

For proper control, you need to identify house fly activity. The common housefly is typically around a fourth of an inch in length. They are usually gray or black in color, with four black stripes on their backs. They have two short wings that do not overlap.

They are attracted to moisture and rotting organic matter, so they can be found in or around trash cans, spoiled food, feces, or compost piles.

To get control of house flies, first sanitize your home. Regularly take out the trash, keeping the garbage in a sealed bin. Clean countertops frequently, clear grease off stove tops, and sweep or mop regularly. If you have pets, pick up or spray down dog droppings and clean cat litter everyday.

Next, use a combination of fly lights, glue traps, and insecticides.

Use Musca-Stik fly traps to capture flies. This is an insecticide-free trap that uses a combination of bright orange paper, glue, and a pheromone attractant to lure and trap the flies. Sprinkle the supplied attractant into the catch basin at the end of the stick. Then hang this in areas you have seen housefly activity. The flies will be attracted to the stick, land, and get stuck – unable to fly away and eventually dying.

If you have flies in a commercial property, you can also use the Mantis fly light trap. This is a light weight, ready to use fly light that uses two, bright UV lights to attract flies. This fly light does not electrocute the flies, but instead lures them to a glue board positioned behind the bulbs where they will get stuck and unable to fly away.

Finally, use Pyrid aerosol as a space spray to kill any remaining flies. Spray the Pyrid where you see fly activity. This does not have a residual, so flies must come into contact with the spray to be effective.

Prevent house flies from returning by keeping your property as clean as possible. Continue to take out the trash, clean kitchens, and minimize decaying organic material.

The fruit fly is a tiny filth fly that is attracted to over-ripened and rotting fruit. They feed on and breed in the decaying organic matter of the fruit.

For proper fruit fly control, you need to first identify the fruit fly. Fruit flies are extremely small, typically around an eighth of an inch in length. They are commonly tan in color. Their most distinguishing feature is their bright red eyes. Their red eyes will help you tell them apart from similar flies like Phorid flies.

Fruit flies are most commonly found buzzing around fruit bowls or fruit left on countertops in kitchens. They can also be found around residue left behind by spilled sugary or alcoholic drinks, around trash cans, kitchen sinks and garbage disposals, and floor drains.

To get control of fruit flies, first sanitize your home or business. Dispose of any rotting fruit or vegetables. Regularly take out the trash, keeping the garbage in a sealed bin. And be sure to clean countertops frequently.

Next, treat the drains in your home or business with Forid Drain Gel Cleaner. This is a concentrated biological product designed to treat organic matter build-up in sinks, drains, and garbage disposals.

Forid’s organic Microbial Grease Degrader immediately starts breaking down organic waste, eliminating the fruit fly’s food source and breeding site. Apply Forid using four ounces per drain.

Pour the Forid around the lip of the drain so that it coats and runs down the sides of the drain. This process should be repeated daily for five to seven days.

Also use Vector 960 fruit fly traps. This is a ready to use fruit fly trap that comes filled with a food grade liquid attractant. The lid has ten vent holes that will give fruit flies access to the attractant and prevent them from flying back out.

Simply remove the cellophane wrapper to expose the attractant, and secure the lid. Place the trap in areas you have seen fruit fly activity. Depending on the room size, you may need multiple traps. And because it is a liquid attractant, keep it out of reach from kids and pets.

Finally, use Pyrid aerosol as a space spray to kill any remaining fruit flies. This is a pyrethrin aerosol that provides quick contact kills. Pyrid is also great for eliminating many other pests. Spray the Pyrid where you see fruit fly activity. This does not have a residual, so flies must come into contact with the spray to be effective.

Prevent fruit flies from returning by keeping your property as clean as possible. Continue to take out the trash, clean kitchens, and minimize decaying organic material.
