The lock nut is a nut that will resist loosening under the action of vibration and torque. There are many types of locking nuts, but they can be broadly divided into those that use friction to prevent loosening and those with some form of positive locking device.

Friction lock nutLock nuts that use friction to resist loosening often require higher torque to tighten and loosen, especially during the initial free spin before they begin to grip the workpiece. . This means that they cannot be pulled quickly over a length of wire, significantly increasing manual assembly time.

Examples include:

  • The nylon lock nut, or nyloc nut, has a polymer washer that is inserted into the recess at the end of the nut, slightly smaller than the diameter of the outer thread. This washer deforms elastically when tightening the nut, causing friction. Since they rely on polymer washers for friction, they are unreliable at high temperatures.
  • Deformed threadlockers have a threaded section shaped such that it must elastically deform to mate with the threaded shaft. This causes a surface normalizing force and thus increases the friction required for locking. Because their construction is all metal, they continue to operate at high temperatures. Deformed threadlockers can be classified based on the position of the deformed thread or the shape of the deformation. For example, entry locknuts have a distortion in the center, allowing them to be started at either end, while a top locknut has a distorted thread at one end.
  • The lock nut, or half nut, is a thinner nut, designed to clamp or “clamp” into the main nut. The jam nut should be tightened first and then the main nut mounted on top.

Positive lock nut
Locknuts use a positive locking device which can be rotated freely for tightening and loosening, they only lock when a positive action is taken to lock them in the current position, such as mounting a cotter pin. This can allow for faster assembly and safer mounting. Examples include:

  • A cast nut, or castellated nut, is a positive lock nut with a cylindrical extension at one end that contains notches. These pins resist a pin installed through the threaded shaft, preventing the nut from turning. The molded nut can be secured with a cotter pin, R-clip or seat belt.
  • Slotted nuts are similar to cast nuts but the slots are cut into the plane of the nut.

A regular nut can also be locked by applying a threaded lock or by drilling and pinning.
