What Paint to Use on Pumpkin | Best painting | Cheap but effective paint | Quickly

The big question is, what kind of paint to use on pumpkins? The nice thing about painting pumpkins instead of carving them is that they last longer that way – at least a month. Especially if you take the extra step of sealing them before and after the painting process. With a carved pumpkin, you’re lucky if it lasts a week before completely rotting. Painting pumpkins also gives you more creative freedom and can be a happier and safer activity for children than carving. You can even paste everything if you want to experiment more.

With all the different paints, it can get confusing. From commercial paints to artist paints, there is also a wide variety to choose from. Below I’ve narrowed the options down to a few you can try for yourself. You can use just one or mix and match them like I did with mine.

Can you use washable paint on pumpkins?

Can you draw directly on a pumpkin?

Yes you can, gently clean your pumpkin to remove dirt and other things that can affect the paint. Do not do it roughly as you may damage the skin. If you are going to leave it outside, where it might be exposed to sun and rain, you can put a coat of glue on it first before doing any paint jobs – and then too. But otherwise, you can completely paint directly without this extra step.

What Paint to Use on Pumpkins – Tried and Tested

These are paints that I have personally tried and get better with exposure to the elements. So you can choose to display them indoors or outdoors.

Best paints to use for painting pumpkinsAcrylic paint

Acrylic paint is a water-based paint. You only need water to dilute them or to clean them, which makes them significantly easier to use. They also dry much faster than oil-based paints. You don’t need to use special artist-grade acrylic paint for your pumpkins, a cheaper craft acrylic paint will do. You only have to coat them for more opaque applications because they are more fluid and less pigmented than artist-grade applications. A small price to pay for the much cheaper cost.

They come in tubes, jars, and even markers and are also available in a dizzying variety of colors. Because acrylic paint dries quickly, you can work in layers, especially for areas where you want the paint or drawing to be more opaque.

My acrylic painting collection. I have them in tubes and in plastic jars. I used acrylic to paint the finer details of my pumpkin with the detail brushes from the Fine Line brush set by ZenART Materials.

To paint the details in acrylic, I used the detail brush fromShapeset of brushesZenART power supply. The specially designed handle really allows me to work comfortably while doing detailed work for long periods of time. And gives me the grip control I need for all those small and small brushing jobs.

Here you see me using one of my favorite brushes from the Fine Line brush set by ZenART Materials –

What paint for painting pumpkins cheap, but effective -Rubber paint(paint the house)

Latex paints are perfect for covering large rooms, they make an excellent base coat before adding smaller details. They are also water based like acrylic paints. Plus, they’re significantly cheaper and come in even larger sizes, ranging from 1/4 cans to 5-gallon pails. So you can paint as much as you want without worrying about the cost. Just don’t use any of your special and much-loved brushes because they can get damaged. I always stock up on cheap brushes for times like these.

Thoroughly mix can or bucket before using paint. Components tend to separate during long term storage. But even if it’s only a week or so, mix it thoroughly just to be sure.

Above is a 1 liter bucket of black and white latex paint. With some used for mixing chalkboard paints. I actually ended up only using the chalkboard paint mixture for the high coverage painted areas, I really like its matte finish. But if you prefer a shiny surface, just use regular latex paint.

What paint adheres quickly and easily to pumpkins – Spray paint

Spray paint

For even faster paint times, you can also opt for spray paint. You can cover large areas very quickly or paint a fun negative with pre-applied stencils on your pumpkin.

Just make sure you use this product in a well-ventilated area (better if done outdoors) and have a large enough area covered with newspaper/waste paper or any other material you don’t can’t. Don’t be afraid to put some paint on it. This is to protect your table or any surface you choose to paint from the fine mist of paint from all sprays. Or even better, create a DIY spray booth big enough for your pumpkin to fit in enough space for you to work with. This will help prevent overprinting, so you won’t have to worry about it sticking to the environment, walls and floors.

First, shake the can vigorously for a minute or two so that the paint ingredients are mixed evenly. Then spray on your pumpkin from a distance of 12 to 18 inches. Swirl the pumpkin as you stir so that the entire surface is evenly coated. Don’t apply too much, instead apply several thin coats and wait for each one to dry before applying the next. If you squeeze and spray too much, it will create water droplets that may not go your way. If you applied masking tape or stencils, wait for the paint to dry before peeling it off.

Above is my archive of materials on spray paint. I used masking tape to cover the parts I wanted to stay orange.

Top: Paint a pumpkin inside a do-it-yourself spray booth – a replaceable box from a package. Bottom: Spray paint an outdoor pumpkin with just recycled brown paper to protect the outer surface.

There are many types of spray paint you can choose from. This brilliant yellow is one of my favorites and is labeled Gold – Brilliant. I also have silver and black as these are the colors that come in handy most of the time for my personal use.

The white color surrounding the gold spray paint is White Titanium acrylic paint. I used

Chalkboard paint

Pumpkin Chalk Paint is my new favorite! The matte finish of chalkboard paint can be a fun thing to play around with or mix with glossier paints to create that great textural contrast. You can even add glitter or metallic paint to your design for more interesting contrast. That’s what I did with mine!

Just like house paint, stir the paint pot/container before use. You can buy ready-to-use chalkboard paint in several colors at the hardware store. Or you can make your own using regular latex paint (preferably matte) mixed with unbaked tile grout, baking soda, cornstarch, or Paris mastic. See the mix ratios below for your choice of mixes and how much to put. Stir and mix well until no lumps remain. Don’t mix too much, just mix in small amounts so you don’t get too much paint on your hands.

Here is the recipe for each, just adjust according to how much you need for the paint. I used baking soda because I already have some at home.

Check out the amazing rough texture of the black and white chalkboard paint below, it goes really well with the gold acrylic paint details I added.

Tips and reminders for what paint to paint pumpkins

Painting time and drying time

These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when painting your pumpkins. Sometimes you may want the paint to be thick so you don’t have to apply another coat. But sometimes what seems like a shortcut will cost you more time to fix or make you regret when you’re done. If it’s too thick, it can run and create streaks of paint here and there as you let it dry. Unless that’s the look you’re going for, resist the temptation to swipe on this paint. Instead, use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process and you’ll be applying extra coats in no time.

Use masking tape

Make good use of it and have fun with the visor! It’s cheap, easy to get, and quite effective. You can easily create designs and patterns using the negative painting technique. Want the edges to look really nice and clean – use tape!

Sketch on the painted board

Charcoals and pastels are like using chalk on a school blackboard. You can easily draw your designs or drawings using them and they are easy to erase when you need. They also disappear under the paint you put on them.

Use the right brush

For rubber or household paint, just use cheap brushes as they can easily damage your expensive items. And you’ll save yourself the trouble of trying to paint detailed works using large brushes, especially those with pointed tips. Use the detail brush for those finer details and really have fun with the painting process!

Check out this fine selection of detailed brushes fromShapeZenART Power Kit. These brushes are designed for smooth and oily acrylic, water color, pigments and inks used.

Can you use washable paint on pumpkins?

Yes, you absolutely can. If you plan to keep the pumpkins indoors, you can also use washable paint. If you want to place them outside, seal them before and after applying washable paint. Otherwise, the coat of paint will begin to peel and peel when exposed to constant sunlight and rain. You can use clear spray paint for this, make sure the paint is completely dry before painting on it. And make sure your painting is completely dry before sticking it on.

And now it’s time for you to draw your own pumpkins!

Hope this inspires you to paint them and not just the usual etching method. You can enjoy your efforts even longer. And there is so much to discover about painting. Remember to have fun and keep in mind the tips and reminders I shared. You don’t even have to draw specific Halloween-themed designs, that way you can still present them even after this holiday.

Along with the Fine Line brushes, this set comes in a rolled-up canvas carry case, making it very convenient to store and transport.

4 Cute Ways To Paint A Pumpkin

Pumpkins are obviously one of the best things about fall, partly because there’s so much you can do with them. Aside from eating them (pumpkin pie!), drinking them (pumpkin spice lattes!), and picking them (perfect date idea!), you can also decorate them. Decorating pumpkins is one of those autumn activities that everyone likes, even though it seems totally cliché and basic. But this year, instead of carving them, why not try painting them? Painting pumpkins is a great way to make them last longer, and they make some really unique fall décor. While it’s fun to go spooky and scary for Halloween purposes, it can also be fun to do cute/pretty designs that don’t need to be thrown away after October 31st. Not sure where to start? Jamie has plenty of ideas! Check out these adorable pumpkin painting ideas, and then get into fall mode creating them yourself!
