To hide them, we would run these wires through the wall and to a point behind the TV, where they would be out of sight, out of our sight.

Today, in the first two-part series on wiring a wall-mounted flat screen TV, we’ll connect to an existing electrical outlet and run the new TV cord and cable through the wall. We will then make a 90 degree turn and run the wires through studs before reaching our destination behind the TV. In the following video, we will install the electrical box, outlet, and wire and cable connections.Before you begin, if you are unsure about working with electricity or wiring electrical components, it is best to call a licensed electrician to do the job. But if you’re ready to improve your electrical DIY skills in some ways, let’s get started.

The first step when working with electricity is to always turn off the power to the circuit you are working on at the circuit breaker. You may need to set up a work light that is plugged into an outlet on a different circuit. Test the socket with a tester before you start to make sure it is safe to test the existing socket we are going to attach. Luckily for us, it was at the end of the circuit, which would make wiring much easier. This is clearly demonstrated by the single wire cable entering the electrical box. Cable types commonly used for civil electrical work include 14/2 and 12/2 non-metallic sheath cables. We will use 12/2 as it is the same gauge as the existing wire that powers the box. The first number represents the wire gauge, where the lower the number, the thicker the wire. The second is the number of wires inside the cable. This cable also includes a ground wire. We will also take the opportunity to install double-taped enclosures at both ends to accommodate both our electrical outlets as well as our TV cables and wiring. But more on that in the next video.

After recruiting help to remove the TV and remove anything in the way, we’ll use this peg finder to locate wall pegs and any other obstacles blocking the way. Upon investigation, it appears there are two wall studs we will need to break through on the way to our final destination. We also make sure there are no plumbing or power lines in the way. We penciled everything on the wall so we know exactly where all the framed members are. Now is the time to take our drywall saw and strategically drill holes in our drywall to allow room to drill holes through the wall studs so we can run the wiring, your electrical and cables .

The hole we are going to cut starts just above the existing outlet and ends near the new outlet that will be placed above our TV cabinet. We’ll cut a rectangular strip through the two rivet cavities and the studs that we’ll drill through, making sure to stop the cut at the last pin. This rectangular strip should be about 8 inches high so that we can keep the low voltage line and wiring at least 6 inches apart. This will help avoid any possible electromagnetic interference between the two wires.

Using a drywall saw, we’ll punch a starter hole and cut carefully so that we can reuse the piece during the drywall repair phase of this project. Directly on the studs we will use a blade knife. It would be useful to use our qualifications as a criterion for our reductions. When we removed the drywall, we noticed that we had two studs side by side, suggesting that you never really know what you’ll find when you cut out the drywall. In our case, this will not be a problem.

We will now use a right angle drill that we rented from a local independent home improvement retailer and a 1-1/2″ hole saw to drill a hole directly in the center of each rivet. This will create a path for our plastic conduit. For the 12/2 power cable, we will drill a 6″ hole in the top using this 3/4″ bit. Be sure to drill these holes as straight and flat as possible so the wire or conduit doesn’t get caught when we pull it through. We will now drill a hole for the new electrical box on the other side of the last nail we drilled, using the electrical box as a template. We will also cut an access hole to make fishing for lines and cables easier. We will pre-measure the 12/2 cable in order to see how far from the wall we need to run the cable.

At this point we are going to pull the cable through the holes in the drywall we just made. We will start with our highest opening in the wall and push the cable through the nail cavity to the hole that will house our new electrical box. We’ll repeat the same process for our plastic conduit, we’ve preloaded the HDMI and coax cables, which are tied together at the ends so they don’t slip down the tube. If we had any trouble we would use this fish tape to help pull the cable or conduit through. We will now go through the wall, first the electrical cable, then the plastic conduit.

Here you have it. We have the wiring in place. In the next video, we will install the electrical box and the outlets necessary to accommodate and connect the wires and cables of our television.

Adding a new electrical outlet to an existing run is a straightforward process. Here we have an ideal situation—the drywall on one side of the wall has been removed and the wiring is exposed. But, save for installing a new electrical box, the process is largely the same. To start, turn off the power to the existing outlet at the breaker panel, and test to ensure it’s off. Then, remove the outlet and detach the wires. Install the box for the new outlet, remove the “incoming” wires from the old box, and run them into the new one.
